A New Moon as Aquarius Ends and a New Year begins!
The North Wind Doth Blow
The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the robin do then,
poor thing?
He’ll sit in a barn,
And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing,
poor thing!
As an attempt at sympathetic magic, I chose this picture of a Robin on a better day. Here in the Boston area, I can’t get to my birdfeeder because of snowfall above my waist. There are very few barns or any open buildings to use as shelter. Robins traditionally left for the winter because they are meat eater (bugs, worms), but with global climate change, Canadian Robins now come here for the winter. That was a mistake this year with record snowfall and achingly cold days. Please send out warming thoughts for our birds, and other small animals as they attempt to survive until a warm day opens a way to food and shelter.
As for humans left out in the cold: ‘The City of Boston recognizes that winter storms and extreme cold weather place homeless people who suffer from medical/behavioral health problems may be particularly at risk if they are exposed to extreme weather conditions. Please be vigilant and dial 911 if you suspect an individual is suffering hypothermia, from frostbite, or is in need of services.’
Will the new Moon on Wednesday, bring a yearned for change in your life, or improve the chances of a sparrow to make it to spring? It’s a new Moon in the last degree of Aquarius, the second new Moon in this sign. Moments later Sun and Moon will enter the sign of Pisces. This is the fifth consecutive new Moon in either the first or last degree of a constellation. We stand at the edge of the limits of our imagination.
Rider Waite version of the VII of Swords
Wild Unknown version of the VII of Swords
Both of these versions of the VII of Swords illustrate the possibilities of this new Moon at 29º Aquarius. It is time to try new solutions for old problems. Instead of fighting a pitched battle head to head, it might be wiser to ‘disarm’ the enemy. The human figure in the Rider-Waite deck evens the odds in a forthcoming tournament. The fox knows his strength, has a variety of strategies, and keeps a weapon close at hand despite his apparent hibernation. Like the Swords, Aquarius is an air sign, with the possibility of a new thought process.
This new Moon takes place at the mid-point of the ongoing square between Uranus and Pluto. This square has colored much of the last few years, just as the conjunction between the two describes the events which took place in the late 1960’s. A good deal of heat is created when these planets interact, but it is not necessarily a heat which sheds light on complex situations. Standing at the fulcrum between them might be the wisest, if not the most comfortable way to deal with the tension. There are several important negotiations taking place in the world at the present time….Ukraine and Iran, Syria and Iraq present us with models of delicate situations which require tender diplomacy. In our personal lives this might be just as true.
Saturn is in square to the Sun and Moon. He is the lord of the sign, Aquarius. Saturn is cruising through Sagittarius at the moment and injects fire, and a sometimes inflated knowledge of the divine plan. Saturn in Sagittarius can be tolerant and all-inclusive, or dogmatic and fanatical about spiritual doctrine. Saturn is also in square to mystical Neptune, very much at home in Pisces. Perhaps the sterner expression of Saturn in Sagittarius might be softened with this contact. This might be the time we could all look at our fondest beliefs to see where they might be expanded and transformed.
Mars and Venus are tightly conjunct in Pisces. When these planets come together, there is a potential for integration. They represent the female energy of attraction and the driving force of male energy entwined…a basic condition for all students of esoteric knowledge.
The Sabian Symbol for this degree is long and abstract, rather than visual, but very much in tune with the chart. ‘Deeply Rooted In The Past Of A Very Ancient Culture, A Spiritual Brotherhood In Which Many Individual Minds Are Merged Into The Glowing Light Of A Unanimous Consciousness Is Revealed To One Who Has Emerged Successfully From His Metamorphosis. KEYNOTE: The ability for the person with an open mind and a deep feeling for self-transcendence to come in contact with higher forms of existence. Conscious totality of being.’ (from The Astrology of Personality, Dane Rudhyar).
This is the Moon that marks Chinese new year of the Goat or Sheep. Celebration for a new Moon and new year begins Wednesday….

Hello, dear Leah, the other deck is one you would love. It is called the Wild Unknown. The only figures in it are animals, all beautifully drawn, and brilliantly communicative!
