‘There are moments when the soul takes wings: what it has to remember, it remembers; what it loves, it loves still more: what it longs for, to that it flies.’

It’s true that every full Moon features the luminaries in opposite signs, but this one is especially a tug of war between many contrary impulses and energies.   But there is a clue to integration in this chart as well.

rocks in balance                    Photo: Sarah Fuhro

The Sun is in the constellation Libra, a place of balance, ruled by the Lady Venus. Moon is in Aries, full of smoke and fury and ruled by the warrior, Mars. Both Libra and Aries mark the time of equal light and darkness, the equinox of spring and fall. The degree of the Aries Moon carries the image of ‘an unexploded bomb’, and ‘adolescent frustration.’ The Libra Sun’s degree is about children ‘blowing soap bubbles’, with the dream of ‘perfect fulfillment.’

Owl and Bob Cat                      Photo: Sarah Fuhro

Confrontation seems to be the theme; the opposing signs use wildly different methods, soap bubbles versus bombs. Yet both are convinced they have the key to human evolution. The rulers of these two signs, Mars and Venus are off on a tryst together, unconcerned about the opposition between Aries and Libra. The symbol of their shared degree in Virgo may hold the key to how these energies will transmute from bombs and soap bubbles into ‘a caravan of cars headed to the West Coast….’ There will have to be ‘cooperative effort’ to reach a ‘New World of experience.’

We are witness to both violence and acts of tremendous kindness. We feel both creative and destructive impulses mixed within our own person. How do we go on from here?   It seems as if a daily scenario of horror and miraculous joy plays out before us, and within us. My hope for something better comes from two books I read recently.

Both books are written by people who have woven together the wisdom of gratitude and connection to earth, and especially plants, the genius of indigenous people, with scientific knowledge and method.   Each comes from a background of heartbreaking destruction to their native culture and way of life. Yet they have created a new culture with very hopeful and deep roots.

pokeweed                      Photo: Robert Fuhro

Perhaps it is the Pokeweed who will give us a clue to where we need to go with the chaos and transformation we experience. This is a plant native to the Eastern United States. It can grow up to eight feet tall and has long stems of berries. As a Flower Essence practitioner I was intrigued with the way these berries develop because the flowers, the green unripe berries and the dark purple berries remain together all on one stem.   This is a wonderful essence for those in transition, because we are never transformed completely and in an instant. All the steps of development are present in the process of growth.

Full Moon in Aries 2017

Much about this chart is akin to the stories of King Arthur, where there is strange mingling of constant combat (Aries) and never ending romance (Libra). Mix into that two planes of existence, human and fairy, and you have the dynamics of Thursday’s full Moon!   There is a funnel of energy called a ‘Yod,’ which brackets the Aries planets and empties out into the Libra Sun. Expect a strong dose of mysterious turns of fate, and enjoy the illusions and insights all of this may bring you as a gift!

The Full Moon in Pisces arrives Friday, September 16, with a healer, Chiron the centaur. If this Lunar Eclipse has a strong connection to your chart, you may experience an up swelling of pain from past experiences, but the remedy comes with the pain. We are not left to doctor ourselves, yet we must be partners in the healing process.

Mars is in square to the Sun and Moon and he has his own centaur companion, Pholus. Both Pholus and Chiron are visitors, possibly temporary visitors from outside the solar system. Each offer healing and transformation of some deep, dark aspects of our shared human experience. They seem to be connected to the ancestral realms and generational healing. They challenge us to look at tyranny, in the family, and inner dialogue.

Physical punishment, shame, and humiliation, were accepted methods of teaching children, in the home, in the school, and in religious doctrine.  They  now seem traumatic. Patriarchy and its rules of how and whom to love have begun to crumble.   Chiron and Pholus tell us there is a wound, but it must be observed, and not judged for it to heal. Will we dissolve into the tears and fears of Pisces, offering ourselves as victim and martyr, or, like the serpent in the picture above, come to accept our whole Self?  That means allowing our less beautiful, less developed facets to be included in the circle.

two-of-cupsThe serpent is part of the symbol of healing as we see in the Two of Cups. It is a reflection of our nervous system and way it wraps around the spine. But healing can only happen when there is balance. This morning a quote in French arrived in my email. The quote was by Dr. Edward Bach, the English physician who developed flower essence therapy. I was startled because it seemed so much in tune with this full Moon chart. ‘La santé dépend de notre état d’harmonie avec notre âme.’ (Health depends upon upon our harmony with our soul.)

How can harmony with the soul be depicted? The square between Saturn and Neptunefull-moon-in-pisces suggests both imagination (Neptune) and focused effort (Saturn) are involved. And then there is love, and with Venus in the sign of balance, Libra, we can take what we have learned from pain (Chiron and the Moon) and transform it through our own creativity and love. This Venus is opposite the energized combination of Uranus and Eris. We must heal our own way, despite what may feel like chaos.

Here is a friend’s message from the morning’s mail:

twisty-tree-sepia“It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.”       Wendell Berry

This chart contains the pain and the remedy, the wound and the balm. In this way we come to know ourselves as wise healers. A doctor studies disease in order to heal it, but we may have to study health in order to heal as well.

edward-bachEurope, Asia, Australia, Africa, West in South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Arctic, Antarctica will see this lunar eclipse. But we all know its power to make us feel wounded and vulnerable (Pisces Moon) and powerfully healed (Virgo Sun).   The Virgo Pisces Lunar Nodes are found in the charts of many healers, Dr. Bach was one of them. He gave up a powerful practice and reputation to go into the countryside and developed the healing power of flowers, something simple and available to the poor folk of depression eara Britain.  He believed all illness began at the etheric (emotional) level, and must be healed through the soul power of flowers and sunshine.

The theme of vulnerability and creative response  is repeated in the Saturn /Neptune square, exact at this time.  We can experience this combination as fear and anxiety or creative opportunity put into tangible form.

Jupiter (ruler of the Pisces Moon) has recently entered Libra.   The Sabian symbol for his degree speaks of the themes of this chart:

‘The transmutation of the fruits of past experiences into the seed-realizations of the forever creative spirit.’     keynote: ‘A repolarization of inner energies leading to a creative centralization of consciousness.’

enigmebody Like the sphinx we are heart and head, lion and lady.

Don’t feel just part of this full Moon chart, feel all of it, pain and healing! The Lunar Eclipse will devour the Moon, our feeling receptacle, but she will emerge triumphant and beautiful at the end The lemniscate over the Lady’s head offers the same process we began with, in knowing and acceptance of our whole person, we are eternal.

A New Moon should be a time of quiet reflection, a moment to pull back and contemplatevolcanoes-orig what seeds will be planted to blossom at the time of the full Moon. Yet this new Moon has full Moon energy to agitate us and keep us moving!

Sun and Moon are meeting in Aries on April 7th at 7:23 AM EDT. Aries is already fiery and full of spring energy. The Sun is Exalted in Aries (more of that in a moment).

They are not alone in their conjunction. Revolutionary Uranus is there, two degrees away. Uranus makes demands upon us to move, to shake it up, to feel the courage to explore new territory. Yet somehow we know we must get off the spinning top of electronic demands that Uranus communicates to us.

ErisThat would be enough excitement, but Eris, dwarf planet named after the Goddess of chaos is mixed in this as well. Discord and confusion are tempting when there is more energy than we can handle. The Sun will make an exact conjunction with Lady Eris on April 12. This gives us time to focus where the courage needs to be applied in our life!

The day before the new Moon, there is a square to Pluto, who doesn’t let anything go unnoticed. He may travel incognito, but we may not. This is continued reverberation from the Pluto/Uranus square we have experienced over the last seven years. The lessons of push and pull are deeply embedded in us by now.

In the core of our apple,

the planet earth,

dwells the great polestar

of the underworld-

Lord of Change,

Transformer eternal,

Hades himself.

With each breath

he draws into his lungs

the Universe begins anew.

He alone has the key

to every rusted lock.

Whoever has walked

across a freshly plowed

field at twilight

in spring’s season,

and raised loving eyes

to see the crescent

moon adorned

in diamond earring,

you are entering

the drama which

has no beginning

and knows no end.

This is also a ‘Super’ Moon, because the Moon is closest to the earth during this instant of new beginning. We are offered a gift of high energy and new spring potential in this poignant moment, which calls for retreat into a place of stillness!

Sun is considered exalted in Aries, which means he can work at his highest potential. It is the season of the spring equinox when the Sun enters the sign of Aries. It is the beginning of a new astrological cycle. 18° of Aries is considered an especially auspicious moment in the Sun’s journey through the ecliptic. If you have a gift of art, of clarity, a new dance to give, do not hold back.

magic carpet

The Sabian Symbol for this degree is ‘A Magic Carpet : The use of creative imagination.

A way of life refusing a hectic involvement in social competition and waste-producing overproduction allows for the development of unattached and transcendent understanding. The period of rest from outwardly directed activity bound to collective normality presents the creative mind with the possibility of surveying in dreams the totality of the present-day social situation, thus “to see whole.”

The fourth stage of the fourth five-fold sequence of symbols invokes the possibility of developing a new technique of perception, a strife-transcending and unattached outlook upon everyday reality.’

In the middle of all this fiery excitement we are at a degree of newness that suggests we pull back and meditate in a way that allows us to see things in a new way…’to see whole!’ How do we do this?

This is an especially condensed set of planets. Where do they fall in your chart? This willnew moon april 2016 be the theater of activity where you will feel this fiery rush of energy and drama. Give yourself the ‘Magic Carpet ‘ of Creative Visualization.

For me it takes place in my 9th House of philosophy, the search for meaning, for spiritual connection, for a world view that gives hope. No wonder I am suddenly devouring Gurdjieff! He calls for a personal revolution based upon self observation. This causes chaos and a deep commitment to ‘creative imagination,’ which Sun and Moon give us in their residence at the 18th degree of Aries.

This will be a new Moon of the Dandelion. I will take Dandelion flower essence from the ‘little Sun’ which bloomed from a crack in the cement dandelionnext to my house!

Nature Spirits are seen at work in the light of sunset: attunement to the potency of invisible forces of nature’   the Sabian Symbol for the full Moon is Aries.

Get up early, and you can watch the total eclipse of the Moon on Wednesday, October 8. For those of us in Eastern United States the eclipse will be begin at 4:17 am. The Moon will be in total eclipse at 6:27 pm. The Moon will be full at 6:50 am. This means we need to find a place to watch her, still in eclipse, set in the West as the Sun rises!

Full Moon in Aries 2014

We have a full Moon chart of polarities!   The Sun is in Venus’s sign of Libra, the Moon is in Mars’ sign of Aries. Each has a stellium of planets and other astrological points to keep them company in what could be a tug of war, or a message of unity!   Have you ever marched in a parade or demonstration holding one pole of a banner while someone on the other side of the street holds the other pole? If so, you know it takes some conscious coordination to keep the message ‘straight on’ and visible. If you start to talk to the person next to you, or slow down or speed up without the cooperation of that other pole carrier, your banner begins to waver and disappear.   This feels like that kind of chart.

Mars and Venus are often pitted against each other astrologically, yet as gods, they were lovers. And doesn’t it take courage (Mars/Aries) to love (Venus/Libra)?   At the moment of the full Moon, Venus in Libra will be in close proximity to the Libra Sun.   Moon in Aries is extremely close to Uranus (explosive energy). Meanwhile Mars in Sagittarius is in a sextile relationship to the Sun and Venus, and in trine to Moon and Uranus. We hear the drumbeat of war (Mars the warrior), but do we also hear the voice of reconciliation Venus in Libra)?   The South Node of the Moon is in Aries. South Node is the area we have developed fully. North Node of the Moon is in Libra, this is the more difficult direction, which requires effort and change. We can use the energy of the South Node, in this case Aries, to push ourselves toward the opposite impulse, Libra.

There is another theme here, which suggests a challenge of the times. This is a square between Pluto and Venus.   She is in Libra filled with love and harmony, he in Capricorn demanding structure and accountability. If we love, we have to manifest what we care about, but if we are all business, and have no time to feel and express our emotion, we may lose the dance.   Pluto in Capricorn could be the crushing death of Venus in Libra, unless, the two can work together to create structures to hold the expression of love.

When we look at a new or full Moon chart, we are in all in this together. The chart of a moment may have more or less impact on our personal lives, but the implication is: this holds true for everyone on earth. We have the opportunity twice each lunar cycle, to ponder the place we as individuals hold in the universal.   When I get into a rant about what I see as injustice or cruelty or stupidity in the world, I need to remember this quote from Lao Tzu.   It seems to me that we come to this lovely planet to transform into what we want to see in humanity.

Once again the Moon and Sun face off. We have the fifth ‘super Moon’ of the solar year because the Moon is at her closest approach to earth. The excitement of the opposition between Sun and Moon grows as the Moon swells! We are aware of all that must be contained in this time of bright moonshine. The crickets and cicadas take out their violins and castanets every evening to play the wild rhythms that are in our bodies and blood as well. What is the rhythm of your heart? How often do you take time to listen to the beat?

When it comes to hearing our heart’s desire, Virgo and Pisces have two styles of response. The Virgo in your chart might want to incorporate yearning into a daily ritual or service project. Your Pisces house and planets will cling to the original impulse of desire, adding depth and purification. In this way we incorporate the ‘in’ breath and the ‘out’ breath, the diastolic and systolic drum beat of the heart! In the Tarot deck, this play between the original impulse of desire (the Rose) and refinement (the Lilly) is symbolized in imagery, which appears so often in the cards.  I have chosen The Magician in his rose and Lilly garden because he represents Mercury.

clear Magician

In the chart for the moment of this full Moon, Mercury, the ruling planet for the Sun’s sign of Virgo is with Pallas Athena, an asteroid named for the goddess of wisdom and war. They are involved in the ongoing square between Uranus and Pluto. Mercury thinks and communicates, and, like the Magician in the Tarot card, can create through imagination and illusion. We live in tricky times and only by walking in balance can we make our way through the tight spots. Right now, Mercury is situated in Libra symbolized by the scales, and we approach the equinox a time of balance between light and dark. Justice is always an issue with Libra planets. Injustice clamors for adjustment, for harmony and balance.

Pisces Full Moon 2014

We should also be aware during this full Moon moment that Chiron is with the Moon. We can’t see him as the Moon rises at sunset, but he is there, a promise of healing.   Chiron was the great physician, who could heal any wound but his own.   Each of us his has him in our chart, a reminder that there is a wound, which cannot be ‘cured,’ but can be the key (Chiron’s symbol), to healing others.   Virgo and Pisces are healers in two different modes. Virgo is the practicing physician; Pisces offers the compassion, which must be applied to the wound. Chiron can use that combined energy to remove barriers to a healing solution. As earth people, we experience the suffering of the Ebola epidemic, and know we are challenged as a species, medically and spiritually to respond. The doctors and nurses who are dying with their patients need an epidemic of healing attention.

A Water ‘trine’ is part of this chart. Water is the element of emotional understanding.   Moon and Chiron in Pisces, the asteroid Juno in Cancer, and Saturn with Vesta in Scorpio are whirling in the ever moving element of water. How might all of this impact your life? Try to piece out this soup of issues: marriage, an investment to a mystical source, the emotional risk of healing.

b and w triskela

The three of pentacles from the Thoth deck combines the Earth element of the Disks (Pentacles) with the Water imagery of this trine. It is also a good description of the opposition between Virgo and Pisces, and why I call it a dance rather than a conflict. A triangle (trine) is stable structure, but it keeps a vibrant rhythm, ready to twirl.   This Water trine gives us the opportunity to explore our feelings and sort our responses to pain and joy. Like listening to heart, sorting our feelings, gives us the opportunity to own them, to learn from them, but to understand their sources and limitations as well as their truths.

After I wrote this blog, I went downstairs for breakfast. I cut open a casaba melon from the farmer’s market. Here’s what I found!

melon crop

Best wishes for your own discovery of the twirling cosmic energy that lies within and without,   Sarah

Two Guardian Angels: invisible help and protection in times of crisis.’

The Sabian Symbol for the degree of Sun and Moon on August 25.

future cloneFuture Clone by Fritz Scholdner

New Moon in Virgo, August 25, 2014

With each new Moon we are given the opportunity to take stock of our journey and ask in the darkness of the Moon, ‘where am I?’ Are we aware of all our levels of consciousness? Do we listen to our bodies, heads, our hearts, and, when possible, the soul who connects us to greater forms and messages. The Sun and Moon in Virgo might offer the opportunity to look at our work life, our occupation. Do we love what we do on a daily basis, or is it time for a change of attitude or employment? What does it mean to have a well loved job taken away, to be unemployed?   What happens when the world is full of people who are told there is no use for them?

New Moon August 25, 2014

Sun and Moon in practical Virgo are opposite Neptune, the planet of the ineffable, mystery, music, art, imagination, addiction and illusion.   Virgo integrates. She is placed in the sixth house of the ‘natural’ zodiac, where we practice our daily rituals, and harvest what we have sown all spring and summer.   She is the healer and the messenger of truths we cannot avoid, earth element truths, and, despite her connection to Mercury, she is a point of stillness in a whiling world. As the luminaries stare across the chart at Neptune, they must integrate the power of the god of the Oceans, just as we who live on this planet must deal with the rising tide of sea.

Dawn, if you are up and about at that time, has been spectacular for the last few days. Jupiter, the ‘greater benefic’ and Venus, the ‘lesser benefic’ are traveling together and rise with the waning Moon into daylight, where they are lost to view! To see them is to love them, and it’s not surprising they were revered as beautiful and powerful influences for good, a blessing for the eye and heart.   Yet not everyone felt that way about these shining lights. Venus, as a morning star was often considered an omen for war and chaos by Mesoamerican astrologer/astronomers.

2004            The concern for people over time has been what happens to Venus when she disappears? Where does she go, when she is neither rising at dawn nor setting at twilight?   She is a lovely evening star then she disappears and later shows up as a morning star, rising with or before the Sun. Venus has an eight year cycle of five steps which may be the source of the figure we call a pentacle or ‘star’ shape.   The pentacle is a symbol of the human form and is used as a protective sigil by many pagans.

Pentacles is also a suit of the Tarot deck, and represents issues of manifestation, stages of work and craft, and prosperity.   The card reminds us that the material world is a gift, which leads us on a long adventure of the soul. Like Virgo, Pentacles are a suit of the earth element, and require attention to practical realities and how they are tied to invisible forces. Virgo uses her power to pick and choose among the grains of the harvest. What will be eaten during the winter to sustain life and what will be stored for seed in the spring.   What will you take with you into the next season?

ace of pentcles

The fixed star Formalhaut is opposite the Sun and Moon. This star is one of the four royal stars of Persia, called ‘the Watchers.’   Formalhaut presides over the South and fire, and is connected to Archangel Gabriel, who blows his trumpet to awaken us to realities beyond those of the material world.

BlackAngel5             Along with the companionship of the two ‘benefics,’ this new Moon chart also features a tight conjunction between the two ‘malefics,’ Saturn and Mars.   Venus on this particular day is in a close square to their position. They must take her into consideration when they delve into the mysteries of Scorpio.   Mars and Saturn are in a sextile to Mercury to create a Yod whose outlet is Uranus.   We might be puzzled about what do with insurmountable conundrums in our life, new or all too familiar problems, but the suggestion here would be to allow totally new thoughts (Mercury) into the formula (Uranus) in order to find better solutions!

May you find your guardian angels this new Moon, and journey with them into new territory…………

A New Moon in Leo for 2014

bee and sunflower(Bob Fuhro)

The  new Moon at 03 degrees of Leo arrives as a beautiful open Sunflower. This is the sacred plant of Leo, and both are ruled by the Sun. The birds planted this one in my garden from the seeds I fed them all winter. Each new Moon is a seed planted in dark moist soil, a secret at the moment of conception, but a plan is already held in its design. The pattern of the Sunflower is both an invitation to open and shine, like the Leonic Sun, and a call to walk the circular path to the inner Self.   This new Moon celebrates the arrival of the Sun to Leo where he is most at home. For those of us on the East coast of North America, the new Moon will take place at 6:41 pm on Saturday, July 26th.

New Moon in Leo 2014

We have just finished a lunar cycle in the Moon’s sign of Cancer, now we celebrate the Sun in Leo. Cancer rules the fourth house in the astrology chart. This is the location of issues around the home of origin, where and how you grew up as well as the place where you live in this part of your life.   Leo is located in the fifth house of creativity, love affairs and self expression. The House of the Moon and the House of the Sun are next to one another. We need a safe home to be creative and self expressive.

These are the days of heat and sunshine for the Northern Hemisphere. Leo celebrates our ability to shine no matter what season or where we live, and invites us to acknowledge our creative spirit, to give off light, and to be courageous in our life expression. The heart and spine are ‘ruled’ by Leo, and we all know that Leo the Lion is the ‘king of the beasts.’

Like the Sun, Jupiter has also recently moved from Cancer (the Moon’s sign) to Leo (the Sun’s sign). The three, Sum, Moon and Jupiter are in a rendezvous of joyous optimism and self confidence. This is our opportunity to feel the difference between egotism and self expression! The ego is always in a defensive position, while true self expression is a celebration of our gifts to share and the ability to appreciate the gifts of others.

Jupiter’s optimism is boundless. He is the largest planet in the solar system, and promotes expansion and the energy to carry out what might otherwise look impossible.   Jupiter has a huge magnetic field, and transmits more radio emissions than our Sun. After all, he is Zeus, the King of the Gods!

I’ve had several astrology clients this week who were born with their Uranus close to this same degree of early Leo where the Sun Moon and Jupiter are located.   This includes those born between 1955-7. The excitement and creative possibilities with Jupiter and a new Moon bouncing off your natal Leo Uranus (electric excitement, revolutionary possibilities) will provide the music for a cosmic dance!

Jupiter and earth TheSun            Just to make the mix even more powerful for all of us, Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon make a square to Mars who has recently entered Scorpio, which he rules from an underground station.   He adds a hint of mystery and depth to this trio of great ones in the sunshine of Leo. Mars in Scorpio is very powerful in a behind the scenes way. His square to the bright light of Leo suggests that there is more than sunshine to this aspect.   At his highest level he will give that lovely sense of possibility a focus to the powerful creative urges that are at work at this time.

Pluto, lord of the underworld and Venus in Cancer eye each other across the chart. Like all oppositions they challenge us to think beyond polarities. To help that cause Mercury, also in Cancer is lined up to square Uranus, suggesting a unique way to think about old divisions. Most of us have our own black and white, positive and negative pillars we might consider in a neutral light like the High Priestess. Her power comes from her integration of opposites. She sits between the pillars of dark and light, with the symbols of male and female on the curtain behind her, while she wears the crown of new, full and waning Moon.   All steps of the cycle are open to her because she values the entire process.

High Pristess            Lughnasadh or Lammas is celebrated around the 1st of August.
better bread

This is the time of the first harvest festival and commemorates the change from hunter gatherer tribal societies always on the move to settled agriculture. It is the season of bread and is the name for the month of August in Ireland, where traditional games are held in the honor Lugh’s foster mother who died as she plowed the hills for agriculture.   It is a traditional time of weddings, but there is a sadness held in these days of harvest and sunshine. Perhaps it is a shared sadness with the cutting down of the grain, which has grown all summer. The light is beginning to retreat and there is a nostalgia for what was lost as the old paths of the ancestral migrations were forsaken, in exchange for the security of village life.

mill wheel

Lughnasadh   is the opportunity to see the soul as a grain of corn.   We can feel its cycle from seed to sprout to full grown grain, ground by the mill wheel, and turned into flour, which is mixed with yeast and water and fire to make bread!   Here is a poem I wrote for Lughnasadh this year:

How to speak of it:

the bramble path to the heart,

the wind as it rolls flat all that

grew in the sweet fields of May.

As we cut away the dead branches

small green whiskers grow out

in such unexpected places.

The season of bread and sorrow

fast approaches. Lughnasadh

casts a shadow in the hot and golden

fields of summer, where cicadas thrum.

Unspeakable how, the Moon, as she rises

catches the light of the run away Sun,

who lies hidden beneath the earth.

Sarah Fuhro     July 12, 2014

May you dance under the Leo Sun with pleasure, and feel your unique expression unfold in whatever form it may take in your heart.
