Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
from Ozymandias  Percy Byssche Shelley

This new Moon has a strong Dream quality to it. Watch your dreams over the next few days, for Sun and Moon are nestled in the arms of Neptune, the planet who takes us into realms of vision, which we cannot enter with words alone. For this reason Neptune is associated with addiction to narcotics or alcohol, or psychedelics and, yet, this chimeric world is available with a simple turn of the head. Who will go there?   I  have Sun and Neptune permanently enmeshed in my chart, and delight in the journeys of dreams and visions, but I have learned to travel with care, Saturn and Jupiter at my side.  And this chart also demands structure and action not dreams alone.

painting: Louis-Edouard Fournier

When Neptune appeared on the horizon for astronomers and astrologers, (1846),  the ‘Age of Reason’ melted, and religious revivals and romantic poetry flourished. I love this painting by Fournier as the ultimate romantic image!  It is the funeral pyre of Shelley, the poet, who drowned in Neptune’s embrace.   His friends burned him on the beach where he died, his blackened heart (or maybe his liver)  cut  from his body and later given to his wife, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein.  Percy Shelley drowned at 29, the age when Saturn returns to our natal  sign and degree, and gives most people a sense of structure and maturity.  But Shelley’s poetry was not meant for Saturn’s ‘maturity,’  It is about a part of us that is ‘timeless’ and immortal.

So many planets are plugged into this new Moon, it is hard to know how to balance all their demands and contributions. It’s a complicated formula:  the desire to fall into vision or trance (Neptune, Sun and Moon in Pisces) with the demand that the message from another world be shared, and acted upon.  In the painting above, the Druid has become the Owl messenger of the Crystal Circle.  Mercury, the messenger is now in his last degree of the the Zodiac.  Like the Druid-Owl he is  ready  to speak of the experience he gained from his journey through all the degrees of all the signs, a journey he began on March 6, 2018, exactly a year ago today.    Saturn and Mars are in a trine of Earth signs. They bracket the Sun/Moon/Neptune dreams with patience (Saturn) , but a demand for action (Mars). This is a beautiful combination for an artist or a shamanic healer.

New Moon in Pisces 2019

This might be a formula to awaken our world to the deep wounds we have inflicted upon the earth.  Chiron in his new sign of Aries, waits next to the messenger, Mercury.  Chiron in Aries has returned to the sign where he was at discovery in 1977.  This was a period of unashamed concern for the earth. Mercury is another planet involved in healing.  They are cheek and jowl in this chart.   Mercury in the last degree of Pisces and Chiron in the first degree of Aries,  bring an urgency to our consciousness.  Vesta, the planet of hearth and home is also with the Neptune/Sun/Moon.  She is there to remind us we are as much a part of this planet as the mountains and the trees.

Menhir in Bretagne watercolor BL                                         painting: Bruce Lhuillier

Virgo and Pisces are the healers of the Zodiac.  Maybe Virgo is the ‘doctor’, the diagnostician, the one who plans the course of healing.  Pisces seems to be the ‘nurse’, the one who provides compassionate care. Pisces is prominent in the charts of nurses, and Virgo with the charts of those who are the  primary healer.  At this full Moon,  they are both at zero degree, the gate, the entry to the signs.   As always they form an axis, which spans  the chart, creating a bridge between the two signs.  Lunar nodes in Virgo and Pisces are very common in healers, both allopathic and alternative.   I chose the painting of the megalith above, because there is an element of healing which can only be found in nature, and when I enter the woods and come face to face with a message as clear as this one, I know that healing will take place.  Dowsers say that megaliths marks underground water patterns, spirals, and turns in the current, places of healing for ancient people, and for us as well.

Chiron is also about to begin a journey into a new sign, Aries.   Chiron is the marker for an indelible wound in our life, a wound which can never be healed, but which provides us with the healing knowledge to help others.   Those born with Chiron in Aries (1968-1977 and 2018-2027)  treat their wounds with impatience.  They tend to shake off the pain they feel, much like warriors,  the sign of Aries.  1968-77 was a turbulent period, with very little adult attendance to the wounds of children born during this  time of  huge transitions.  Children born with this Chiron, had to take care of themselves and perhaps other children around them.  They are like combat medics, who learned they must quickly bind up wounds, and make choices about who can survive.

The Sabian Symbol for this degree of Chiron in Aries, is  mysterious:   A WOMAN JUST RISEN FROM THE SEA. A SEAL IS EMBRACING HER.  Impulse to be. Chiron occupies the degree which begins the journey of the zodiac, the degree of the Spring Equinox. In this powerful location he is entirely focused on the evolution of the planet’s consciousness.  Like the image above, we are part, fish, part beast, part winged creature.  We live in the waters of the unconscious, Pisces, and  struggle to analyze where we are and where we have come from, Virgo.

Virgo is ‘ruled’ by Mercury, Hermes, he who is always moving about in our heads and swiftly travels with the Sun.  At this moment of the full Moon, Mercury is a close companion to Neptune, one of the rulers of Pisces.  Neptune pulls our rational impulse under water.  Here  we dream, experience visions,  and forget Virgo’s concerns.Hermes (Mercury) was the dream master of the ancient world.  Neptune is an entirely different psychopomp.  My dreams have been vivid and memorable over the last few days as this combination of Pisces/Virgo, Mercury/Neptune has moved into position.

Nitien Ring .jpg

photo: Sarah Fuhro

A few days ago I visited the Peabody Museum in Cambridge, and was fascinated with  strange brass  rings from Liberia, called Nitien.   Made by the Kru and Grebo people,  found in creeks, rivers and lagoons,  they are water spirits or ‘Gods of water’.  Nitien have the ability to stop wars, found villages, heal the sick and guarantee fertility. They are also able to catch people crossing streams. The Nitien live in the water but can be caught and brought into the village, where they serve as protector or guardians.  These rings represent this moment of time to me, this full Moon in Virgo.   We are caught up with the illness to our waters and seas.   Perhaps at this full Moon moment we can walk under the beams of the Virgo Moon/Pisces Sun axis to ask for the Nitien energy to heal us, to heal the waters and the seas of Pisces.  Chiron as he stands at the gate of Aries, offers us the potential of new forms of consciousness. On Tuesday, 19th of February,  take a moment to feel the ‘embrace of the seal.’

The Visionary                                    photo: Sarah Fuhro

This might be the New Moon of ‘the Seer.’   A Seer, a visionary, a psychic describes a scene for us. She must state clearly what she sees, even if it is only a partial view of a situation, a glimpse through a key hole.

If we take a moment for a new Moon ritual over the next few days, we may feel that potential for something new, even unexpected in our body.  The message might appear in our  hips, for that is the part of the body, which is ‘ruled’ by Sagittarius.  But it might speak to us through some other channel completely.  I wonder if we listen to these messages, could we  avoid the louder, more insistent  voice of illness and discomfort in our body.

Visage.jpg BL                                 photo: Bruce Lhuillier

Once more, we are at a moment of new beginning, a black Moon seed ready to be planted in the dark earth, with hopes for a harvest of …..what?   Maybe the rest of the chart for this tender passage into new territory will have give a clue as to what is the potential for sprout and harvest.  An astrology chart can be a theatrical moment, when a group of players (planets)  are aligned to interact in various dramatic ways.   Let’s see if we can make out what happens on the cosmic and earthly stage, and how it is reflected in our personal lives.

new Moon in Saggitarius 2018

The Sun has now traveled the first half of his journey through the constellation of Sagittarius.   Sagittarius is associated with a kind of joyous idealism, an enthusiasm for philosophy and travel and partying.  The energy of this sign is not blocked unless the ideals become a stick to hit other people.   Sagittarius is both very enthusiastic about other cultures,  and religions, or the same energy  can be equally fanatical and intolerant of differences.

At the moment of the new Moon, Jupiter,  the king of Sagittarius is in close connection to the Sun and Moon.  The Symbol for the degree where Jupiter is located speaks of unexpected emotions: ‘CUPID KNOCKS AT THE DOOR OF A HUMAN HEART.    KEYNOTE: A stirring-up of individual longings for romantic love. Emotional rebirth.   Sagittarius is an archer with an upraised bow, who shoots at the stars. Cupid is a child of Venus who creates mischief, or ’emotional rebirth,’ with his arrows, which do not respect the rules of society.   Cupid’s arrows break the grip of the mental process, and open the heart.

And speaking of action.   We have a very interesting pair in the wings.  They may not be immediately visible to us as we take a moment for a new Moon ritual, but they will be strongly felt.   Mars, the warrior and Neptune the mystic are  in perfect conjunction with a strong (square) relationship to the Sun and Moon.   Mars is full of energy and fury, but in watery Pisces and conjunct the ruler of Pisces, Neptune, he may not be able to focus his passion.   Neptune never can be seen head on.  He is a dream figure, without a clear strategy, yet he can sink our ship or keep us afloat in the sea of our emotions.

The theme of elements in Fire and Water can make a beautiful melange, a poem, an inspired piece of music or art.  Or it can all escape in steam.  We call upon earthy Saturn in Capricorn to ground it in form.  He promises us: AN ANGEL CARRYING A HARP. The revelation of the spiritual meaning and purpose at the core of any life situation. ATTUNEMENT.  Creativity, is the essence of this Moon moment.

Crystal Heart

Once the heart opens,

she becomes awake, a crystal,

a crystal bowl of reception.

Once a ball of volcanic stone,

now she is a melon exposed,

crystal walls, a geode of pulp.

Neither stone, nor water

she listens, hears the code

in her exposed walls of blood.

It’s under the full Moon we see our shadow self projected where we stand. And while this is true of every full Moon, this full Moon with its Aries/Libra energy casts light on the basic polarity of male and female interaction.   Some very important truths remain hidden until the time is right.  This full Moon may be that moment of revelation.  Saturn is in an exact square to the Sun and Moon.  Saturn injects time, and unavoidable responsibility to manifest into this moment. His Sabian Symbol is ‘a human soul, in its eagerness for new experiences, seeks embodiment.’   As much as Saturn is about the past, he also is about incarnation of spirit into material form.  Like this image of an ancient megalith  from Brittany growing amidst a young forest, there is a huge amount of energy  from the past mixed with the dynamic energy of the present in this full Moon, which will occur on Monday!  The young trees hide the stone from the casual eye, and yet seem to enhance its meaning!

Full Moon in Aries 2018

The Libra Sun and Aries Moon always make this opposition around this time of year.  The moment of the fall equinox has taken place with a momentary balance of dark and light.  The sign of Aries is also about equal amounts of dark and light, yet the fiery energy of spring has a very different feeling, not so much balance, as a revelation of life’s persistence after winter quiet.

There is an aspect of emergence in this chart and this moment which might be best understood in light of the Kavanaugh revelations.  Events long considered, ‘just the way things are,’  are no longer hidden below the surface of time.  The natural privilege of men to subdue and silence women has been challenged.  The way we think about men, women, and physical power is under judgement.  The degree image of the Sun, ‘the dawn of a new day reveals everything changed’ says we are beyond compromise.

image

The symbol for the degree of the Moon, ‘the cameo profile of a man, suggesting the shape of his country,’ is there for all to see.  This is the shape of power challenged by all those who have had enough.  Chiron, the wounded healer is the companion of the full Moon.  Mercury and Demeter are traveling with the Sun.  Sometimes tenderness and compassion win out.

ring of water and stones .jpg                     photo: Aaron Greene

Mars and Venus are in opposition in these two signs, Libra Sun and Aries Moon.  The vital masculine energy of Mars and Aries are held in the Moon’s embrace, and weighed in the scales of Libra Sun.    Saturn with the companionship of the asteroid Vesta sees and reveals an old and hidden  wound between men and women.   Note that Chiron the healer is very close to the Moon.  Vesta,  at the same degree as Saturn is goddess of hearth, and the sacred aspect of women’s rites, (and rights).  Of course this chart applies to everyone on earth, not just the characters in the drama in Washington.

Storm and torches BL                                                      photo: Bruce Lhuillier

And there is more in this dramatic full Moon.  Typhoons, hurricanes and massive gas explosions are nature’s expression of the power that is building.  Mars and Uranus are locked in a square which corresponds to elements of their signs.  Uranus, always the planet of unexpected and highly electrical energy, is inTaurus.  Taurus is an Earth sign ruled by Venus, who, by the way, is in Scorpio, great revealer,  right across from Uranus and square to Mars.  What does this all mean, you say?   The planet earth is no long suffering in silence while humans deny her pain.   The Sabian symbol for the degree of Uranus is: ‘an electrical storm.’  Mars is in close contact with Black Moon Lilith, a representation of the fury of the disrespected woman.  For most of us this will play out internally.  We will feel male and female aspects of ourself in conflict, restless and eager for new relationships, where we no longer deny emotions or visions.

Saint and wounded figure BL                                              photo: Bruce Lhuiller

We all have  work to do.  This full Moon will give us a clear definition of where we need to develop balance, and honesty about how we dispose of our our garbage,  which never goes ‘away,’  but has the potential to become compost.  In all this storm and chaos, are the seeds of a new spring, whirling in the wind.   I’m tired of astrology which does not embrace the life force which is held in conflict, because these conflicts are always pieces to make up the whole.  This full Moon gives us each the opportunity to accept both sides of old polarities we have been taught to fear, to embrace and laugh as we watch our shadows dance under the full Moon.

Perhaps you  already feel the unsteady motion of this moment.  The whirling energy of eclipse season can be delicious or overwhelming.  Either way, you can still celebrate,  Leo style.  Sometimes we just need to rock and roll with the waves of time and space.  After all, nothing is permanent, which is probably a good thing.  But a party on a houseboat has two kinds of motion, the water beneath our feet and the joyous human energy of a special occasion under the stars.   ‘Party on a Houseboat’ is the Sabian Symbol for the new Moon on Saturday, which will eclipse the Sun.  You have to live in far northern lands to see this one, but, as always, the energy of the solar eclipse is an opportunity for a fresh start.

New Moon in Leo, 2018

And we are in the middle of the Perseid meteor shower, another reason to look up from the ‘party on the houseboat’ into the summer night sky.   If we are sensitive to all this movement, there are many ways to keep our balance.  The Two of Swords is one way:

image.png

By sheer force of will and the discipline of the sword, she holds the moment still.  Yet the tiny crescent Moon says this will be a very short exercise, her blindfold keeps her from disorientation,  and she must remain seated to keep her balance.

image.png

In contrast, the Two of Pentacles pictures a way to keep in balance as an eternal dance,  equilibrium through movement, the Lunar cycle set to music, a sailor’s hornpipe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff0X8blt3Ks.

Featured in this new Moon and eclipse is an opposition between the lovely Venus in her sign of balance (Libra), and the warrior version of Chiron in Aries.  Can love only be learned through heartbreak as pictured in the Three of Swords? This final eclipse of the year sets in motion a heart opening  with Venus in Libra and Chiron in Aries.  Leo rules the heart as well as the spine.  Aries rules the head.  All this Leo eclipse energy might release through the opposition between these two points….

Unknown.jpeg

I felt some of that Chiron healing recently after listening to an interview with novelist and philosopher Alain de Botton.  I feel better about my imperfect marriage, my flawed attempts to be a good parent, and my lackadaisical career.  Perhaps he’s right: we’re here to learn from all of these heartfelt attempts rather than to perfect them. The dance on the houseboat continues, and we can participate as in the Two of Pentacles or hold tight as in the Two of Swords.

” Love is a painful, poignant, touching attempt by two flawed individuals to try and meet each other’s needs in situations of gross uncertainty and ignorance about who they are and who the other person is, but we’re going to do our best…. the acceptance of ourselves as flawed creatures seems to me what love really is. Love is at its most necessary when we are weak, when we feel incomplete, and we must show love to one another at those points.”  https://onbeing.org/programs/alain-de-botton-the-true-hard-work-of-love-and-relationships-feb2017/

cups02.jpg

The wisdom of the Tarot  pictures the moment  of the Alchemical marriage under the sign  of the caduceus and the winged Lion’s head.   Caduceus is the wand of Mercury, and yes, at this moment, Mercury is in Leo within a few degrees of Sun and Moon in Leo, the Lion.  This card speaks of love between two people, or an internal moment when a painful opposition is accepted in wholeness. Clearly these lovers are taking part in a sacred ritual of healing.

Leo is the Sun’s happiest location.  Yet this is at a time of year when the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere is headed South, and we who live here are losing daylight hours.  Leo is the sign of theatre, actors, the heart and grand gestures.  It’s the sign on my Ascendant, my soul’s entry point.  People with a lot of Leo energy in their chart struggle between the desire to manifest their soul’s fire, and to find a way to channel that energy without singeing themselves or those around them.  The ego needs to be acknowledged and then released.

image.png

Many powerful planets line up to participate in this moment.    We won’t see the new Moon, and most of us won’t see the eclipse of the Sun created by the Moon’s shadow.  Yet it takes place in each of us.   Don’t be afraid to rock the boat as you dance under the stars.
