The Sun celebrates in Leo, and there are a lot of others at the party for the full Moon!  Venus is right under the Sun’s beams, and his light diminishes her light, but not her beauty.   Love and Sun might look something like this: a Venusian altar!

IMG_0806                                             photo: Sarah Fuhro

Traditional Astrologers say planets this close to the Sun are ‘burnt up’ and so can’t function, but maybe it’s more like extra fuel for both, Sun and Venus.  Maybe it is like singing in harmony, weaving the melody between two voices.

Wren                                      Image from the Druid Animal Oracle, illustration by William Worthington

All spring and Summer, a  pair of wrens have ruled over my yard.  Extremely tiny and extremely loud, they sing even when carrying a tasty insect to the babies, now on their second batch.  Their happy song is like water over a stony brook, but when angry, it is like a tiny machine gun!   The wren seems oblivious of size.  They are almost as small as humming birds, but extremely feisty!  They might stand in for Mars and outraged Hera,  also in Leo, close to the Sun’s degree, hard to see in bright light but easy to hear!

Full Moon in Aquarius 2019

If the Moon carries our emotions, an Aquarian Moon has a unique method of transport.         Like a dream I once had where I had a yoke with only one pail, the Aquarian Moon is ready to balance whatever Leo and his party is missing.

A friend recently suggested that autism is an expression of angel emotion. What if this is true?  Perhaps more and more angels are incarnating ‘on the spectrum’ of autism.  Difficult for them, but many of them are attempting to reach a wider definition of humanity this way.   No connection between Aquarius Moon and autism, but the characteristics and goals of angels and  autism read like the Aquarian Moon’s description:   unpredictable, eccentric, detached, yet altruistic.   Angels have no particular gender, and this is also true of androgynous Aquarius.  As the spring equinox moves into this sign, we feel the shift in the majority culture towards a sexual spectrum, instead of a clear delineation, male or female.

Uranus, the eccentric planet discovered during the French Revolution is assigned to the Fool card in the Tarot, and is a co-ruler of Aquarius.   During this period of his discovery, the King, represented by Leo,  was overthrown and the idealistic fanaticism of Aquarius became the despot.

So this is not an easy Moon to dance under or integrate.   Yet they both have this in common.  They demand from each of us some form of self expression.  The Sun  in Leo is kingly, ready to roar, a little deaf to other voices around him.  The Moon in Aquarius has no fear of new expression, new feelings, new insights. She hears what has not been accepted as expression before.   Maybe this is the Moon to howl under, to recite poetry in her light, to search the stars for new adventures.   It’s definitely a Moon to release what is no longer vital.

This full Moon is about Water and Stone….Cancer Sun and Capricorn Moon.   Moon will be in a partial eclipse,  visible in Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe, and South America.  For those of us in North America,  she will rise after her initiation,  after her disappearance and reappearance into the shadow of the Earth.

Emerging from the dark shadow of the eclipse, our own full Moon may feel renewed, ready to reflect the bright light of the Cancer Sun in a dark Capricorn sky.  The journey to this place of fullness has planetary challenges as well.

full Moon in Capricorn

Tonight (Saturday)  the Moon rose with bright Jupiter as companion.  She will roll along and meet with Saturn and Pluto before her assignation opposite the Sun on Tuesday.  Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn urge transformation.  The security of Saturn takes us by the hand to go deep into the mysteries of Pluto.

Many of the planets in this celestial moment are in retrograde, they appear to move backwards.  This is an opportunity to mend old wounds and take care of long postponed projects.  But perhaps we will also feel a new strength we didn’t know we had.   The Moon’s symbol for this degree of bright fullness and eclipse is: ‘a store filled with precious oriental rugs.’   A treasure is held in this moment.

When I walked in the woods today, there were brightly painted stones along the path.  Some had messages: ‘Be Kind;’ some were designs with bright colors.   Here is one that looks like a full Moon.  I plan to celebrate the full Moon with friends on Tuesday night. There will be water and earth….fireflies and mosquitoes, food and drink.  The sky always gives us a reason to party!

At a quiet moment,  there can be an offering to the Moon.  A friend suggested a Tibetan ritual of gratitude for the senses at the full Moon.  On a special altar stone in the woods:

Sight.  A small mirror.

Sound. A bell or other instrument.

Smell: Incense or perfume

Taste: Food

Touch: a silk ribbon or fabric.

A small crystal ball for the sixth sense, which is formless.

Each full Moon propels us to rock between two contrary seasons and ‘opposite’ signs!  For me, this spring has been an endless ricochet between the beauty of the earth held in the horns of Taurus,

898

and the deep wet chasm of death, Scorpio, washing through me,  which ties me up each spring between joy and despair!

The desire to hold on to the beauty of this moment, this time, is the the Taurus Sun.

But the profound desire of Scorpio to understand mortality, to plunge into the depths of our spiritual nature held in this full Moon.   This is the measure of the art of Alchemy, which arises each spring in my heart:

Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Your willingness to wrestle with your demons will cause your angels to sing.’ August Wilson

As an angel, Michael seems to have an ethereal approach to his battle with a snarky demon, but for most of us, it’s not so easy.   This battle is reflected in the astrology chart for the full Moon with Saturn and Pluto in friendly relations with both Moon and Sun.  They demand our attention, perhaps to say:  ‘you are making to much of your demons.’

Full Moon in Scorpio 2019

All this reflected in the Sabian Symbol for the degree of the Moon:   The King of the fairies approaching his domain. …..beyond both outer nature and the realm of the proud ego, a spiritual world exists to which the intuitive consciousness of man can pay allegiance.  This is the deep work of Scorpio.   And this is the Desire body which all Western mystery traditions hope to develop in us.  It is our ability to sense spiritual messages in the material body, which is part of this tradition.   Scorpio is often associated with sexuality because in moments of intense love making we understand, through the body’s pleasure,  that our spirit has no boundaries.

Taurus Sun and season is talking of Desire for something, someone outside of ourselves. Love in the spring season (Taurus); when everything is about love, is ruled by the Lady of Love herself, Venus.  At this moment Venus is also in the sign of Taurus, and she is in the company of that crazy planet, Uranus, who says there are always new ways to be yourself.  Venus and Taurus make a nice aspect to Mars, Scorpio’s ruler.  So it seems that the desire of Taurus and the desire of Scorpio speak to each other at this moment of full expression!

Mercury, the magician, the healer, the speaker is whispering in the ear of the Taurus Sun on Saturday evening.   The full Moon opens us to greater depths of communication.  Scorpio Moon asks us to explore what moonlight has to offer in familiar places.  Instead of holding tight to the days of spring unfolding, I will try to open my hand to the message of wider light and meaning…

On Saturday we begin a lunar cycle in the sign of Taurus.   Taurus is about love, and especially love of the Earth.  It marks a time sacred to the goddess, she who made all things beautiful!  The planet Venus is the ‘ruler’ of this sign.  Taurus in the sky takes the form of a bull with crescent horns.  Astrology calls Moon in Taurus ‘exalted.’  And while the Moon visits Taurus each lunar cycle, it is only at this beautiful time of year that the Moon is ‘new’ in this sign.

The celebration of Beltane, the fire festival of joyous love comes just at this precious degree (14º-15º) of the new Moon.  Taurus is often associated with wealth, but this Beltane, I feel the poverty we have created here on our planet.  It is not just the poverty of large portions of humanity, our sisters and brothers, but the poverty we have created through the determined destruction of our beautiful home.

My feeling of sadness during this season of beauty and fertility, is perfectly described in a passage from Philip Carr-Gomm’s book, The Druid Tradition.*

the rise and fall of the blackbird’s song drew me back to my everyday state of consciousness, and as this happened a great despair overwhelmed me, and I looked into the blackbird’s eyes and I knew why he looked so sad. This world, this everyday world exists too, and it is the only one of its kind. The essence of all that has lived here can never be destroyed and it will live forever in the inner world and perhaps on other planets and at other times, but here, now, it is unique and it can be destroyed and it is being destroyed. The world is mortal too, like us. ‘

New Moon in Taurus 2019

When I look at the chart of this moment of birth for the new Moon, I see we have passed beyond the crazy shaking energy of Uranus, which was  focused on Sun and Moon  at the moment when fire dislodged the protective aura of Nôtre Dame de Paris.  Neptune is the planet which creates a secondery theme for this new beginning in Taurus.   Neptune is the mystery we can only grasp through image, and vision.   Here is the passage from Philip’s book,  which preceded the one above.  In this passage, he paints a picture of a place where all the species decimated and made extinct by our indifference live on.

The blackbird paused in his singing, looked directly into my eyes, and then began a song that rose and fell in a way that led me into a peculiar trance-state I had never experienced before. And there, in that state, I just knew his answer. He did not speak or tell me – his song simply took me there. And there was here, only different…..there were dragonfly and butterflies everywhere: chequered skipper, large blue and Adonis blue danced their way over flowers only my grandparents would have seen. Mother Shipton moths competed with pretty chalk carpet and dark brocade moths in the undergrowth of cowslips. Stone curlews, lapwings, hawks and falcons flew high and free in the sky above.’

Over the years since I first read this passage, I have thought back to it many times.  There is no way to heal the Earth through despair, nor can I shrug my shoulders and say, somewhere  the essence of this damaged world exists whole and repaired.   And so I look to this new Moon in the sign of Earth-Love, Taurus,  and ask for a celebratory heart.  I think of the Great Blue Herons building their nests in conservation land not far from my house.   They cannot afford to stop to weep for the swamp drained and ‘developed.’  Those few who are left build in what remains.

This new Moon chart has most of it’s planets in a bowl shape with a handle made of the asteroid, Pallas Athena, she of the ancient wisdom tradition.  Wisdom is often built from mistakes made and mistakes acknowledged.

The passage on extinction continues: And we are the first generation to know this. To know that our Mother can die. Might die. For a child this realisation will, all things being well, lead to an increasing maturity. Let us hope that our understanding of our Mother Earth’s mortality will lead us to a sober maturity rather than a nihilistic despair or an insane attempt to actually ensure her death.’

And so as we circle and dance at Beltane, we weave our love and joy for the Earth’s beauty and bounty into our fear and hope for the future.

King wood logo
         painting: © Bruce Lhuillier Art
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
from Ozymandias  Percy Byssche Shelley

This new Moon has a strong Dream quality to it. Watch your dreams over the next few days, for Sun and Moon are nestled in the arms of Neptune, the planet who takes us into realms of vision, which we cannot enter with words alone. For this reason Neptune is associated with addiction to narcotics or alcohol, or psychedelics and, yet, this chimeric world is available with a simple turn of the head. Who will go there?   I  have Sun and Neptune permanently enmeshed in my chart, and delight in the journeys of dreams and visions, but I have learned to travel with care, Saturn and Jupiter at my side.  And this chart also demands structure and action not dreams alone.

Louis_Edouard_Fournier_-_The_Funeral_of_Shelley_-_Google_Art_Project_sized

painting: Louis-Edouard Fournier

When Neptune appeared on the horizon for astronomers and astrologers, (1846),  the ‘Age of Reason’ melted, and religious revivals and romantic poetry flourished. I love this painting by Fournier as the ultimate romantic image!  It is the funeral pyre of Shelley, the poet, who drowned in Neptune’s embrace.   His friends burned him on the beach where he died, his blackened heart (or maybe his liver)  cut  from his body and later given to his wife, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein.  Percy Shelley drowned at 29, the age when Saturn returns to our natal  sign and degree, and gives most people a sense of structure and maturity.  But Shelley’s poetry was not meant for Saturn’s ‘maturity,’  It is about a part of us that is ‘timeless’ and immortal.

So many planets are plugged into this new Moon, it is hard to know how to balance all their demands and contributions. It’s a complicated formula:  the desire to fall into vision or trance (Neptune, Sun and Moon in Pisces) with the demand that the message from another world be shared, and acted upon.  In the painting above, the Druid has become the Owl messenger of the Crystal Circle.  Mercury, the messenger is now in his last degree of the the Zodiac.  Like the Druid-Owl he is  ready  to speak of the experience he gained from his journey through all the degrees of all the signs, a journey he began on March 6, 2018, exactly a year ago today.    Saturn and Mars are in a trine of Earth signs. They bracket the Sun/Moon/Neptune dreams with patience (Saturn) , but a demand for action (Mars). This is a beautiful combination for an artist or a shamanic healer.

New Moon in Pisces 2019

This might be a formula to awaken our world to the deep wounds we have inflicted upon the earth.  Chiron in his new sign of Aries, waits next to the messenger, Mercury.  Chiron in Aries has returned to the sign where he was at discovery in 1977.  This was a period of unashamed concern for the earth. Mercury is another planet involved in healing.  They are cheek and jowl in this chart.   Mercury in the last degree of Pisces and Chiron in the first degree of Aries,  bring an urgency to our consciousness.  Vesta, the planet of hearth and home is also with the Neptune/Sun/Moon.  She is there to remind us we are as much a part of this planet as the mountains and the trees.

Virgo and Pisces are the healers of the Zodiac.  Maybe Virgo is the ‘doctor’, the diagnostician, the one who plans the course of healing.  Pisces seems to be the ‘nurse’, the one who provides compassionate care. Pisces is prominent in the charts of nurses, and Virgo with the charts of those who are the  primary healer.  At this full Moon,  they are both at zero degree, the gate, the entry to the signs.   As always they form an axis, which spans  the chart, creating a bridge between the two signs.  Lunar nodes in Virgo and Pisces are very common in healers, both allopathic and alternative.   I chose the painting of the megalith above, because there is an element of healing which can only be found in nature, and when I enter the woods and come face to face with a message as clear as this one, I know that healing will take place.  Dowsers say that megaliths marks underground water patterns, spirals, and turns in the current, places of healing for ancient people, and for us as well.

Full Moon In Virgo 2019

Chiron is also about to begin a journey into a new sign, Aries.   Chiron is the marker for an indelible wound in our life, a wound which can never be healed, but which provides us with the healing knowledge to help others.   Those born with Chiron in Aries (1968-1977 and 2018-2027)  treat their wounds with impatience.  They tend to shake off the pain they feel, much like warriors,  the sign of Aries.  1968-77 was a turbulent period, with very little adult attendance to the wounds of children born during this  time of  huge transitions.  Children born with this Chiron, had to take care of themselves and perhaps other children around them.  They are like combat medics, who learned they must quickly bind up wounds, and make choices about who can survive.

The Sabian Symbol for this degree of Chiron in Aries, is  mysterious:   A WOMAN JUST RISEN FROM THE SEA. A SEAL IS EMBRACING HER.  Impulse to be. Chiron occupies the degree which begins the journey of the zodiac, the degree of the Spring Equinox. In this powerful location he is entirely focused on the evolution of the planet’s consciousness.  Like the image above, we are part, fish, part beast, part winged creature.  We live in the waters of the unconscious, Pisces, and  struggle to analyze where we are and where we have come from, Virgo.

Virgo is ‘ruled’ by Mercury, Hermes, he who is always moving about in our heads and swiftly travels with the Sun.  At this moment of the full Moon, Mercury is a close companion to Neptune, one of the rulers of Pisces.  Neptune pulls our rational impulse under water.  Here  we dream, experience visions,  and forget Virgo’s concerns.Hermes (Mercury) was the dream master of the ancient world.  Neptune is an entirely different psychopomp.  My dreams have been vivid and memorable over the last few days as this combination of Pisces/Virgo, Mercury/Neptune has moved into position.

Nitien Ring .jpg

photo: Sarah Fuhro

A few days ago I visited the Peabody Museum in Cambridge, and was fascinated with  strange brass  rings from Liberia, called Nitien.   Made by the Kru and Grebo people,  found in creeks, rivers and lagoons,  they are water spirits or ‘Gods of water’.  Nitien have the ability to stop wars, found villages, heal the sick and guarantee fertility. They are also able to catch people crossing streams. The Nitien live in the water but can be caught and brought into the village, where they serve as protector or guardians.  These rings represent this moment of time to me, this full Moon in Virgo.   We are caught up with the illness to our waters and seas.   Perhaps at this full Moon moment we can walk under the beams of the Virgo Moon/Pisces Sun axis to ask for the Nitien energy to heal us, to heal the waters and the seas of Pisces.  Chiron as he stands at the gate of Aries, offers us the potential of new forms of consciousness. On Tuesday, 19th of February,  take a moment to feel the ‘embrace of the seal.’
