I am here to live out loud’   Emile Zola

Once again, Moon in the sky fills with light as she lines up opposite the Sun to offer us the energy of full tides, and the dark lantern of night travel. She is no longer the crescent canoe, but now is a full masted ship ready to set sail for places we only dream to travel.

Moon and the Sun are once more at the ‘Master Builder degree of 22°.   This is a degree of fulfillment, available to those who grasp their mission in life, to those who have the courage to reach out and transform their talents into gifts of creative imagination and mastery.

The Sabian Symbol for this full Moon is: ‘ A Lion tamer displays his skill and character. The need to tame one’s vital energies in order to fulfill one’s destiny. Resoluteness and Patience. This is the degree of the artist, who must take raw energy, talent, life force and turn it with great resolve and patience into a gift on the material plane.

As with the Moon’s degree symbol, the degree of the Sun at this moment also connects to ‘vital energies:’ ‘ A ‘materializing’ medium giving a séance. The ability to give of one’s own vital energy to substantiate one’s conscious ideals or unconscious desires. Substantiation. ‘ Again we are asked to dive into the spiritual/non material world and return with a material gift.   Is this the role of the Moon in our lives? Her light does not work in the way of sunlight, but she marks and teaches time, tide, yearning, and the inspiration of mystery. Poetry comes from her.

Is this the Moon who tells us that to manifest something we need ‘resolve’ and ‘patience’? That seems clear enough, but what is ‘vital energy’? The Moon degree is suggests that we have to take charge of our life force. The Sun’s degree is about the need to utilize that vital energy! The character of Virgo and Pisces are in a strange dance at this degree. Virgo must tame and polish vital energy; Pisces must give it away!

And we are not done with the Master Builder degree in this chart!   Uranus and Eris, revolution and chaos, are also at a 22° point. They stand at 22° of Aries, the constellation of ‘vital energy’.  The Sabian Symbol for this delicate point in the chart is:  ‘A pregnant woman in a light summer dress. Fecundity. Inner Fulfillment.’ How do we handle revolution and chaos?   Can we see its fecundity?   Or do we get lost in the anxiety of travel in a strange land? Blessed Jupiter lies opposite this pair. He optimizes the potential of this vital life force through his tilt of the scales (he is in Libra) towards light and balance.

And there are other forces at work as well.   Chiron (the healer) and Pallas Athena (the wise one) snuggle up to the Sun in Pisces. This full Moon offers the gift of focus, resolve and patience as the healing force in the midst of drastic change. Venus moves away in retrograde motion towards old dreams, values; love that was left behind.

Full Moon in Virg 2017

Saturn, makes a square to Sun, Moon, Chiron and Pallas Athena. He holds the reins between their opposition.   Here is his Sabian Symbol, and the resolve of what may feel like oppositional forces: ‘An old bridge over a beautiful stream is still in constant use.’ Beautiful Necessity.’

Bricge at NOLA                photo: Bruce Lhuillier     Bridge in New Orleans Municipal Park

When Saturn and Chiron are in square. there is a great conflict between authority (Saturn) and authentic healing (Chiron). The old Saturnic way of dealing with trauma is to bury it, and to move onward. Authority has demanded this on the grounds of survival, but now that route is visible as a blind alley. We can feel this in the political theater around us. The wounded economy, ecology, health and justice system are bleeding. Repression will not solve the problems we face. Those entrusted with leadership display deep wounds, the first step towards healing. The necessity for authentic response becomes a matter of life and death. Chiron square Saturn hits us in a volley between what we know we each can do and the price we might have to pay for taking a leadership position. Saturn stands over us, daring us to move out of our comfort zone into the transformative mode of self-healing.

This is a new Moon chart crowded with planets and other cosmic objects located at the end and the beginning of the zodiac. It feels as if we are all on a stellar journey of deep significance. We must end one cycle before we begin anew. But astrology charts, just like life are never that neat.

Lots and lots of planets in Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac are crowded together next to a multitude at the very beginning of the Zodiac (Aries). Like all adjoining signs, Pisces and Aries are quite unlike. The signs next to each other are teachers to one another. Pisces teaches Water, teaches universal love, teaches martyrdom and the erasure of personal identity. Aries teaches Fire, teaches the thrusting energy of the individual, and the anger of the warrior. But like a family, like a community, like our own inner complexity, every chart contains contradictions, which must be embraced, in order to be whole.

About this time, Neptune swallows Sun and Moon. The Moon is already invisible because of her proximity to the Sun. An annular eclipse of the Sun visible in the Southern Hemisphere, will darken the Sun except for a gold ring! Neptune opens our spiritual senses, we have to feel what is happening in the sky.

Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces. He is the opportunity to see beyond the material world, and to feel the oceanic tides in our system. Neptune’s energy blurs sharp focus in waking hours, and makes dreams vivid at night.

The Sabian Symbol for the degree of this new Moon is ‘A jockey spurs his horse, intent on out distancing his rivals. Self quickening.’ This is an image of competitive energy with a focus on recognition. How do we get noticed, and what is the impulse to be noticed? And what is the recognition allowed a Pisces Sun and Moon, in eclipse and swallowed by Neptune?

During the winter so much is underground, hidden, presumed dead. All that was in hibernation wakes to a fiery call. The compression of most of the planets into these two signs is like a spring, which has been pushed down, but is now ready to burst into freedom. The watery Pisces energy is about to combine with the volatile combination of Mars, Uranus and Eris in Aries. This year we had no somnolent winter. The political theatre in America and elsewhere reflects the Aries direction of this new Moon in Pisces chart.

Uranus and Mars are in the service of the goddess Eris. Eris, is the scorned and rejected woman; she who is not invited to the party. It was Eris who concocted the test of the Golden Apple, and thus began the Trojan War. Eris is the sister of Mars-Ares. She has been slowly moving through the sign of Aries since 1927. Now she is aligned in fiery Aries with the always disruptive, Uranus and her brother, Mars the god of War. What to do with this powerful trio if we know their potential for damage?

judgment_of_paris_rubens_1638

                                                                  The Judgement of Paris   Rubens

The last time Uranus and Eris met in Aries, was between 1426-1517, a time of upheaval and war all over Europe, and the period of violent ‘discovery’ of North and South America by Europeans.   The Hundred Years War took place as did the ‘War of the Roses.’ Joan of Arc might be the significant symbol for Eris at this time. She took up arms against the English invasion, yet was burned as a witch, and then sanctified as a saint.

Anything crystalized during the Middle Ages was thrown open by Uranus and Eris in devastating spasms of change, and the development of new cultural forms. This was a period of religious and spiritual experimentation and yet it was also the time of great religious repression, a flowering of new sects and mystical vision, and the Inquisition.

Now it is our turn to experience the combination of anger and creativity, spirituality and destruction held in this chart.

The Second Coming     W.B. Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Perhaps it will be Jupiter who holds the key to a hopeful outcome. Jupiter is in the sign of balance, Libra. He is the traditional ‘ruler’ of Pisces, the sign of the new Moon and Sun. His Sabian Symbol at 22°Libra is ‘Chanticleer’s voice heralds sunrise. A creative and joyous response to life processes.’

For all who fear ‘The blood-dimmed tide’ take heart with Jupiter’s position in the chart, opposite Uranus, Eris and Mars. Their energy and creativity and courage are available when we accept our part in the drama of these times into which we were born. We might remember the courage of Jeanne d’Arc: ‘I am not afraid. I was born to do this.’

Birch marks the first month of the Lunar Tree Calendar. The trees of this calendar are also an alphabet, Ogham, used by Druids as a secret form of communication. By learning about trees that grow where we live, and spending time alone with trees, we can learn so much about how to maneuver in life. Our ancestors did this. Now we are here, amongst trees who share the earth with us. Trees will answer our most difficult questions. That is why Ogham is also a form of divination, a way to deepen our communication with tree knowledge.

Birch is sometimes called a ‘pioneer’ tree. It was one of the first trees to appear after the Ice Age, and is often the first tree as meadow transitions to forest.   So it seems only natural that Birch is the first Moon of the Lunar calendar. She can be used herbally and symbolically for cleansing! Birch is a fresh new start.

The full Moon on January 12 is Birch at her moment of full manifestation, an opportunity see the world with the fresh eyes of this graceful, maidenly tree. Her bark often seems to have eyes, which look back at us!  She is full of the magic power of the Shaman.  Birch is one of the first to leaf out in springtime.  Below is Queen Puabi’s  necklace from Ur decorated with gold birch leaves!

Little Birch Moon     Sarah Fuhro

This little birch Moon

is slipping out into dark

night, stepping away

from the lights and music

of the bustling cabin.

When the Moon

has her darkness,

she takes it in silence.

Going out she leans against

the great dark tree

and looking straight up,

recalls sailing in that tree top

as a full and flying Moon.

Moon feels the bark

against her tired spine.

In the dark,

 and all alone, by herself,

 she gives birth

What will this Birch Full Moon in Cancer show us?   Lots of contradictory gifts are offered, but that is the nature of a full Moon! We can feel that energy surge through us and pull the tides along as well!    Can we dance through the contradictions with respect for all sides of the chart?

There are six cosmic objects at 22° in the chart for this full Moon in Cancer.  In numerology, twenty two is called the Master Builder, and is a number of great potential. There are twenty two letters in the Hebrew Alphabet. There are twenty two cards in the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. Why does 22 have such a powerful reputation? How can we embrace the potential for creating the life and community we want, and become ‘Master Builders’?

The Sun is at 22° Capricorn, a sign of the builder and organization. Moon is at 22° Cancer. Cancer is the sign of the home and the family. Moon in Cancer opposite Sun in Capricorn might represent the cosmic transformation of a building into a home, a place for people who call themselves ‘family.’ That could mean our whole planet for the astrology chart is universal!

mesopotamian-god

Jupiter, also at 22° holds the reins to the opposition between Sun and Moon. Jupiter is the BIG God. He is expansive, a bright planet in the sky, who fills us with optimism and surety, when we let him into our hearts. His bird is the Eagle, and he is pictured here, from a Mesopotamian bas relief as the powerful force behind the Universe. Because he is in the sign of Libra, the Scales, he represents Justice and judgment. At this perfect moment of balance between Sun and Moon he offers the insight and wisdom we need to be fair and to see all sides of an issue.   Only a keen sighted eagle can do this!

triskell-saint-germain

Opposite Jupiter, Eris that feisty goddess of Chaos is also square to Sun and Moon. She is in the sign of her brother Aries. She is in the close company of Uranus, the Revolutionary and Demeter, Earth Mother.  Aries is the sign and energy of the warrior, but also the Life Force. Aries rules our head and eyes. Eris might represent new insight or blind fury. This snakey Celtic Triskelion from the Musee Saint Germaine de Laye illustrates the whirling energy of Eris, Uranus and Ceres in the Full Moon  chart.  How does the rest of the chart, Sun, Moon and Jupiter react to this deep stirring in the fourth arm of their Grand Cross?

celtic-auburrn

Here is the image to represent our psyche or the astrology chart of this full Moon moment. The Master Builder of the Sun in Capricorn, the deeply emotional creative force of the Moon, the balance of Jupiter and the chaos of Eris, are all part of the moment.

But I think Saturn might be the best planet to explain the how we can use the churning messages of this chart . He is truly the ‘Master Builder,’ and rules the Sun’s sign of Capricorn.   Saturn often has the final word on the subject. He is also at 22° in the philosophical sign of Sagittarius!

The Sabian Symbol of his place in the chart seems very apt for this moment in time when refugees are :   ‘A group of immigrants as they fulfill the requirements of entrance into the new country.  Keynote: Consciously accepting the ways of a new stage of experience, in readiness for the opportunities it will present.     Transition’

lepiotaI have been waiting for this full Moon with curiosity, excitement and anticipation! It has a heavy footprint on my own chart, and will be felt by all of us as a universal moment of choice. Early Sunday morning the full Moon in Aries will shine her light on a powerful set of planetary players.

The Moon is close to the earth at this full Moon. This is sometimes called a ‘Super Moon.’ We can expect high tides in the ocean and high tides in our inner seas!

This highly energized (Aries) Moon will settle on Uranus and Eris who have come together, to set the tone for the last year, and will continue to create surprise and the need for creative response. ‘How high can you jump’? and How high can you jump, if you are not in balance?  might be the theme of this combination.

Uranus was the first planet discovered by telescope, and so has a connection to technologyfull-moon-in-aries-2016 in astrological language. The discovery took place during the French Revolution, which changed the Western mindset, from a long established agreement of feudal hierarchy to a belief in the unlimited possibility of human potential. Uranus is seen as a planet of individuation, an activator of each person’s identity, which goes beyond family, nation, religion. An occult revolution also took place around that time, and astrology transformed into a method of understanding our individual identity.

Now Uranus brings us together as a human race through the communication possible on the Internet, and astrology is once more focused on larger issues than the individual. Uranus is called the higher octave of Mercury. How will I listen to another level of wisdom, during this Uranus connection to the full Moon?

stone-headHow will we each communicate what we hear? We need both sides of this full Moon opportunity, the balance and deep understanding of Justice is the gift of the Libra Sun, and the vital energy and stamina of Aries Moon.   Sun is consciousness. Moon balances direct light with reflected light, an opportunity to see what we cannot see in the luminosity of day.

The Sun’s sign is connected to Venus, the Moon’s sign belongs to Mars. The two strands of energy, male and female, Yin and Yang bind together the Universe, and are stretched tight. The message is to combine the two impulses and reap the benefit of their combination at this precious moment in time.

The close companion of Uranus is Eris. She was discovered in 2005, and named for the sister of Aries. It was Eris who threw the Golden Apple into a gathering of goddesses and caused strife between them over who was the most beautiful.

The meeting between Uranus (the revolutionary) and Eris (goddess of discord and chaos) gives us the opportunity to think in new ways, perhaps to begin redefining what it is to be human. The full Moon turns our eyes toward the combination of these two, highly energized planets and how they can be understood and accessed for transformation, if we are conscious of their potential.

Mars and Pluto are in conjunction, another indicator of great potential for violence or for birth! Can we hold this much energy without chaos and violence? The potential for healing is indicated in the lunar nodes. They suggest we focus upon healing at both a universal and personal level.

Is it possible to empty ourselves of fear and anxiety; blocks, which do not allow us to see possibility or to live to our greatest potential?  Ceres, the Earth Mother is up there with the Moon, Uranus and Eris. The Sabian Symbol for the Moon’s degree (23° Aries) gives a clue to the gifts available to us: Blown Inward By The Wind, The Curtains Of An Open Window Take The Shape Of A Cornucopia.’   The Sabian symbol for the Sun’s degree (23° Libra) A Butterfly With A Third Wing On Its Left Side‘ says a third awakening is imminent. If we accept our energy and potential creativity from this passage towards our evolution as children of the earth, we could celebrate this time under this Moon into a dance of universal growth and peace!
