This is a full Moon in total eclipse-but it’s a penumbral eclipse.   The earth’s shadow falls across the Moon, it’s visible, but very subtle. A penumbral eclipse is unusual.   There a re never more than nine in a century, and some centuries miss out on them all together.    To notice this eclipse, you need to know it’s happening. It’s like a party for the initiated!   If the sky permits you to see this delicate veil across the Moon, Friday at 7:33 pm (EST), then you are a member  of the initiated. But don’t worry, whether or not you see her physical form in the sky, the energy of this vibrant Leo Moon will still make its mark on your life.

Once again we have a full Moon event with Sun, Moon and many planets at the powerful 22° point, the ‘Master Builder’. The last full Moon was constructed at this intense degree as well. https://sarahfuhro.wordpress.com/2017/01/11/full-moon-in-the-master-builder-degree/  .  What are you building at this time?   Here is the three of Pentacles to show us all three aspects of creation; vision, design, and craft!

three-of-pentacles

The Sabian Symbol for both Sun and Moon represent the discipline necessary to evolve without destroying natural and vital forces. The Sabian Symbol for the Moon: ‘In a Circus, the bareback rider displays her dangerous skill. Keynote: The audacity and perseverance required to control and play with the powerful energies of the vital realm in human existence. Virtuosity.’ Leo is the sign most associated with Ego and the Sun. This is the Ego in its highest form, because it has been ‘tamed’ and yet it retains the vital life force of the horse, and the Lion.

thoth-strength-card                               strength-card

The Sun at 22° of Aquarius has another image of evolved animal energy: ‘A big Bear sitting down and waving all its paws. Keynote: The self-discipline which results from an intelligent development of individual faculties under proper training. Discipleship.’

This is going to be a full Moon of focused  energy, but it requires consciousness to ride with it. The Strength card from the Thoth deck represents this degree in one way, a ride on the power of Leo, requiring mastery of the rider. The Rider Waite Strength card represents it in another way with emphasis on the gentle mastery of power.

full-moon-in-leo-2016

Sun and Moon are at this degree, but so is Vesta, she who guards the hearth, and Eris, the goddess of Chaos dwells at 22° as well. Eris  is in close company with Uranus who is electric and a master of high tech communication.  Much of the drama we see in the political waves of the moment seems symbolic of this pair: Uranus and Eris, and their conjunction in Aries, soon to be joined there by Mars.

Also at 22 degrees of Pisces,°we have Chiron, the wounded centaur who heals all others but himself. Chiron is in a square to Saturn. This guarantees that wounds will have salt rubbed into them, and probably from someone in authority. I wonder who that might be? This square lasts for a year and while it will touch everyone, it hits those with these birthdays most exactly:

December 11 through 19 of any year
March 10 through 17 of any year
June 10 through 18 of any year
September 13 through 20 of any year

A square between Chiron and Saturn guarantees old stories come back to haunt us until we learn new techniques to heal ourselves and turn those healing methods out to others. Until we become light workers, and from our experience of pain, draw balm for others, we circle around and around issues of authority, self acceptance, and leap from formless and permanent immaturity to rigid structures, until we no longer know who we are.

mandrag-bl

But when the heart opens, and the Ego becomes the vital force of the soul, everything changes, and the Saturn-Chiron square represents the master healer, the leader who leads by example, the authority who serves others by opening her heart.   We have a year of this experience for everyone on earth. Why does it seem as if so many lessons must be learned through pain?

eau-meso

Jupiter provides some balance. He is at 23° of Libra, the scales. Because he is in retrograde, he too will soon be in another 22° position. Uranus who is across the chart from him, will also move by direct motion into 22°of Aries, and the ruler of that sign, Mars will join Uranus, opposite Jupiter in 22° Aries.   Twenty-two degrees demands greatness from each of us…we are all expected to build in a ‘masterful’ way.

What if this full Moon in Leo represents harnessing the Wind (Aquarius is an Air sign) and Sun (Leo is a Fire sign) to empower our planet without destroying her? This is where Vesta, (also at 22°) might take on the meaning of the hearth and home as source of electricity. Right now my solar panels are covered in newly fallen snow, but most daylight hours, they are working to add non-polluting energy to the electric grid. The potential to use each moment of cosmic drama to joyful advantage is always with us!

New Moon, Old Sign

When I write about a new Moon, I am always in the dark of the old Moon. And instead of the high energy of the full Moon, we have to wait for several days to see the proof of a new birth in the sky as she sets at sundown.

Unlike the full Moon where we are on a journey of greater and greater manifestation and integration, the new Moon begins a new cycle, preceded by the finish of the old–there is a sense of hurry, the light is fading. But to continue the complexity of the last few Moons, this one is in the last few degrees of the sign of Aries. The Moon will begin anew linked to the final days of the Sun in spring’s fiery initiation.

new-moon

Like all new things, the new Moon is born from darkness.   Here in New England we have experienced a winter like no other with unending cold and storms.   The earth has been sealed shut under layers of snow. What will emerge, what plants and animals survived is still a mystery.

That most ancient of plants, the skunk cabbage is definitely up and out, unfolding in a spiral deeply rooted in dark swamps.

This new Moon of Saille, the Willow, celebrates water, the great transformer. The Willow belongs to the Moon, and grows close by or sometimes, knee deep in water.   Willow is an herbal remedy, which cools fevers, and heals the ravages of damp diseases. White Willow bark is lovely tea for achy joints from arthritis and rheumatism, or any kind of swelling. Aspirin is Salicylic acid taken from the word Saille, Willow, and originally made from the Willow herself. Willow (Saille) is associated with the feminine energies of the earth and sky. This is a good time to stop to listen and respect your intuition, your powers of divination and your connection to ancestral spirits.

Here is a beautiful tribute to Water from Gregory Porter: ‘Liquid Spirit’.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS6JV-veVAE.

Are we not alive in a time of water consciousness?   While the oceans fill with melting ice from both poles, many lands are turning to desert, and California, that paradise of fertility is now in crisis because water will not come when it is needed.  Water in solid form has stood three feet deep for months, holding back spring for my garden.

Moon and Sun meet at 28° Aries, and listen to the Sabian Symbol held at this degree:   ‘The Music of the SpheresAttunement of Cosmic Order. The music of the Spheres is the celestial embodiment of principles of polyphonic interplay. The individual advancing ‘on the Path’ should seek to understand and realize his place in the vast scheme of mankind’s evolution, in the immense chord of the harmony of the universe… Listen to the inner voice.’ Dane Rudhyar, An Astrological Mandala.

The chart of this poignant moment on April 18th contains a powerful T-Square.  Venus, our lady of beauty and love, and Saturn, teacher and he who constricts spirit into material form are in opposition. This is a combination most artists know well. Venus is there to inspire, while Saturn demands the ceaseless work needed to make inspiration into form. Neptune and Vesta square them, like a bow pulled back to shoot an arrow at the Point of Fortune in the chart. Neptune is the universal form of Venus….Cosmic Music of the Spheres. And what about the virgin goddess Vesta, Hestia of the hearth? She is the companion of Neptune in this triangle of love and mutable potential. A triangle is a stable form. Take something wordless, universal, full of music (Neptune), pair it with the sweet surety of the inner voice (Vesta), and bring it into form (Saturn) as an act of love (Venus).   Take the tide of this new Moon where it wants to go!

I want to share the poem which celebrates this April Moon of Saille in the 2015 Lunar Calendar ( http://www.thelunapress.com).

Message: New Moon in April

Are you awake yet

and has any voice, human,

feathered or furred,

whispered to you by this lightening hour

the secrets of a new moon in April?

I hope so

I hope twenty messages by sunset

have let you know

that you, there under the granite cliff & the silver oak,

are held close, held warm

-and that the hills thick with sage

and the bare boulders rising above you

hold you safe in their strength

and their mighty pleasure

Oh, may you know

that the grey dove in her thoughtful murmuring,

the red tail hawks tilting in the wet spring wind

and behind the rough bracken’s veil, the voices,

the mountain-full of rivulets

all flicker and beckon and sing, brimming

with love of you

And I would, this ordinary morning, a continent away,

add a cool splash

and a merry whistle, if you’re still asleep,

and have you wake laughing, surprised,

spilling over

Holly is a tree of protection. He is called ‘best in the fight.’   The Holly King after his battle with the Oak King at the Summer Solstice is victorious. He will once again lose the battle to the Oak at the Winter Solstice. So the wheel of the year turns with special treats at each season! Darkness grows for those of us who live north of the equator, while light is expanding his realm in the south. Our earth has limitless lessons to teach us about the balance between dark and light, the season of Holly and the season of Oak.

Saturday, July 12, the Moon will fill again, and overflow. The Sun will be in the Moon’s sign, Cancer. The Moon watches from Saturn’s realm of Capricorn, the builder. For those of us in the Eastern time zone of the United States, the moment of perfect fullness will take place after the Moon has set (7:24 AM EDT), but with a day of full Moon energy rising before us.   This moment has a powerful set of squares from other planets and heavenly points, which will enrich our opportunity for service to the earth, if we choose to align ourselves with our home planet and with ourselves.

Full Moon in Holly 2014

The planets aligned with the opposition between the Sun and Moon send a message about the need to face some problems, which can only be solved if we release our sense of victimization.   Pluto and the Moon, for example, speak of exploring fears, which keep us from realizing our dreams of what we can accomplish (Capricorn).   Uranus, in fiery Aries squares the Sun and Moon and jolts us into an understanding that we can be constructive or chaotic in the revolution. The nearby South Node reminds us that we have been here before, and have chosen anger or destruction as a reaction to new aspects to our lives.   Meanwhile, in Libra, and also square to the Sun and Moon we have Mars, Ceres, Vesta and the North Node. This creates a powerful Grand Cross. When we feel the pull of opposite forces in our life and in our desires, we need to stop to be in the moment, to feel the center of that immense energy for change taking place. Yeats expressed it for his time, now it is our turn.

 W.B. Yeats

The Second Coming                 W.B. Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Tower card            The Tower card was Yeats’ favorite. For him it represented a new round of poetic inspiration. For all of us, it can be a reminder that crystallized forms, which isolate us, will not stand. Mars, Ceres, Vesta and their alliance with the North Node, opposite to Uranus and the South Node, square to Sun and Moon and trine to Venus and Mercury, are the musicians for this chart. It will be their drumbeat, which will lead us on the evolutionary development, if we take the time to listen!

demeter

For the human population to awaken to the message of Ceres, we have to break through our isolation in an air conditioned tower. What action we take will have much to do with the assignment Ceres and Vesta offer us in our chart. Each person has a unique way to honor and protect the planet.

The warrior Mars is closely aligned with Ceres and Vesta in this chart. The Tower card corresponds to Mars, and tells us the consequences of staying home for too long. The tower pictured in the card, shows a structure with no connection to the rest of the environment, there are no neighbors, no forest or meadow or sea side surroundings. Mars comes to shake us out of our cage. Uranus and Pluto will join in from the other arms of this cross. It would be better if we come down without the lightning bolt, of our own accord, to embrace what we don’t yet know.

Mars, Demeter and Vesta are in Libra, ruled by Venus, who with the company of Mercury the thinker, speaker and magician, says we must be just, and loving in our service to the environment. If our environmental thrust is built upon anger rather than love, we will only create another tight little tower, which will crystallize and imprison us.   The Sabian Symbols for the degree of Mars, Ceres and Vesta is: ‘A Butterfly with a Third Wing on its Left Side. The ability to develop, for inner strengthening, new modes of response to basic life situations’

Sun and Moon in Cancer and Capricorn will brighten our skies this July. Home and work (Cancer and Capricorn) will be the canvas of our creative work.   Are these two realms in harmony or conflict in your life?

Friday, the 13th of June will begin with a full Moon just after midnight.   Thirteen is an important number in the Moon cycle for it is the number of Moons in a solar year. This issue of Moon and Sun in calendar calculation has to be solved in a number of uncomfortable ways, rather like the problems of Cinderella’s step sisters when each tried to put her foot into the glass slipper. The earliest calendars were calculated on the Moon’s cycles, and Jewish and Islamic calendars remain lunar. The problems arise when a lunar calendar must correspond with the Sun’s journey in a solar world. Below is a picture of a stone age Moon calendar.

 Image

http://www.ancient-wisdom.co.uk/Images/countries/French%20pics/abriblanchard.jpg

The fear of thirteen as an ‘unlucky’ number may be related to the persecution of those who kept to the lunar calendar, as this was considered a sign of witchcraft.   Since Friday is sacred to the goddess, and the planet, Venus, there was further fear of the contamination of the feminine in a polarized world view. To celebrate the revival of the feminine, witches, druids, and those who love the earth, turn toward the lunar calendar to enrich our sense of the sacredness of time and season. Friday the thirteenth is a day to celebrate a lost segment of our connection to cosmic time.

The Kiss

Does Time cease to move,

Till her calm grey eye

Expands to a sky

And the clouds of her hair

Like storms go by?

—Robert Graves

This is the Moon of Duir the Oak. It is the Moon of the Summer Solstice when the Oak King is defeated by the Holly King, and begins his departure to the South. He will not return to us in the North, until he renews his battle at the Winter Solstice.   Oak is the king of the forest trees. The Oak’s bird is the wren, tiniest of all. She represents the sacred aspect of life, we so often miss.

 Image

The opportunity to harmonize rather than polarize our way of looking at the world is given with each full Moon and this one is about the power and pleasures of rational thought (Gemini) and the observance of spirit (Sagittarius). In this chart, Jupiter who rules the sign of Sagittarius is in the Moon’s sign, Cancer. We each have the opportunity to celebrate our thoughts and our intuition with this full Moon. Jupiter is the only planet with an exact relationship to the Sun and Moon face off. His degree has the Sabian Symbol, ‘The Meeting of a Literary Society. ‘ This is a perfect image for the Gemini Sun/Sagittarius Moon. It’s a book club, where the pleasures of reading are shared in communication with friends, a mixture of intellectual activity (Gemini) and a social and spiritual gathering (Sagittarius).

Image

We have some other interesting markers in this chart as well. Mercury is rolling backward (retrograde) and will return to his sign of rulership (Gemini) soon. Here is the opportunity to rethink commitments, ideas, strategies. You may want to edit your writing project rather than plunging ahead with it.   You, and the rest of the world have this time to change your mind!

Venus and Saturn are also in opposition like Sun and Moon. Saturn is in retrograde and moving through old material. Wouldn’t this be a good opportunity since Saturn is in Scorpio, a sign of deep and serious excavation to look at your own history with Venus, who is in her natural sign of Taurus? What is your romantic history? If you know what sign Venus occupied when you were born, you can get a flavor of your outlook on love. There is another dimension to this opposition between Saturn and Venus. This is a good combination for any kind of artistic (Venus) work (Saturn). It could also be a time when financial efforts would pay off, if looked at with deep scrutiny.   What are your resources? If we think of Merlin and Nimue, we can see how these two planets have something to offer each other.   Each is in charge of a vital part of life, love (Venus) and work (Saturn). Until we love our work and work at our love, things never go right.

 Image

http://www.angelfire.com/me2/camelot/images/unknw4.jp

Mars and Pluto are in a tight square. They are higher and lower expressions of each other. Mars is an everyday representation of action. Pluto is the deep and fateful expression of unintended consequences from our actions. Uranus is still with range to square Pluto and oppose Mars. If we observe our actions (Mars), and their consequences (Pluto), we have the potential to create an evolutionary step towards greater understanding of who really are (Uranus).

Image

Read the Sabian Symbols for this  Moon and it offers a deeper insight into the potential of this moment in time. The image for the Moon is ‘A group of immigrants as they fulfill the requirements of entrance into the new country. Consciously accepting the ways of a new stage of experience, in readiness for the opportunities it will present.’   Are we ready to be immigrants to a new land, where we will no longer know the ways of our past conditioning?

The Sun in Gemini: ‘Three fledglings in a nest high in a tree. The growth of spiritually creative processes in an at least relatively integrated mind.’ So we have fledglings and immigrants as our model for this full Moon moment when Sun and Moon face each other Friday at midnight. May you enjoy what the moment has to offer.

The New Moon of Duir (Oak)

 Imagehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/england/sevenwonders/midlands/i/sherwood-majoroak302.jpg

 Black Face

Eat out of my hand, little wild soul,

crazy squirrel, black face singer.

The singer who is my sister is dark, dark.

The hand I extend to the wild animal

is white, white.

I hear the sound of the tinkling bell.

It cracks the silence.

I am like the baby chick

who knows when to break

the perfect architecture of my isolation.

And I peck my way out,

but not until I am strong enough

to break through can I break through.

The acorn is also an egg.

the chick inside is the king

of the forest.

The oak climbs to the heights

that equal the journey of the sun.

I am looking for the acorns

that feed the wild pigs

in the forest,

and I am black of face,

and white of hand.

and my bell calls my animals.

 I make a fire

and from the charcoal

of the burnt bones of the oak

that hatched from my acorn,

I blacken my face once again .

 Sarah Fuhro April 1992

Each Moon cycle begins in darkness, just as we are initiated and nurtured in the dark womb. In the Northern Hemisphere plants are just now pushing their way out of the dark earth, while in the Southern Hemisphere, the season is turning towards the season of greatest darkness.

This Moon in Gemini is the Oak Moon, which contains the moment of the Sun’s greatest power and height, culminating in the Summer Solstice, the Sun’s moment of standstill before turning southward. The Duir Moon is a season of high culmination in the Druid calendar, for the Druid is the person with ‘Oak knowledge.’ In the description of Pliny (first century CE), the Druids performed their rituals in oak groves, and gathered mistletoe, sacred to the Sun from the Oak tree.

 Image

http://hedgedruid.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/druids-grove-tree-circle-near-baslo

The oak is sacred in many cultures because of its ability to attract lightening, the direct communication of the gods. Most of the ‘top gods’ were lightening gods, Jupiter, Zeus, Thor, Shaddai in Hebrew, Tlaloc for the Aztecs. The oak’s huge size, strength and longevity represent the world, a home for many species, providing food, shelter, heat and shade to those who live in and around the king of the trees. Oak is often called the World Tree.

We are in the Moon cycle of the greatest power of the Sun here in the Northern part of the world. At the conjunction of the Sun and Moon (new Moon) the power is shared, and if we are open to the cosmos, we can feel that powerful moment in ourselves. Male and female, darkness and light blend as the two luminaries meet to leave our world, temporarily Moonless. When the Moon emerges to set at twilight a day or two later, she is robed in beauty.

 Image

http://livingmoonastrology.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/old-moon-new-moon.jpg

The new Moon will be feeling an exact square from Neptune in Pisces; some of the cheery rationalism of Gemini may be awash in that watery planet’s dreams and illusory powers. Perhaps this moment of the new Moon would be a good time to stop, and if possible, to meditate and feel the chatter of the airy Gemini Sun and Moon, slow down into a chant.

Mars is also directly connected to the luminaries in a trine of air. There may be some action, conceived at this moment to be put into form as the Moon fills into her Sagittarian robes.   The Sabian Symbol for the degree of Sun and Moon is pertinent to this chart’s symbols of vision or dream (Neptune) and Mar’s urgency towards action.  ‘Aroused strikers surround a factory.’   Revolt against privileges.

Over 100 McDonald’s Workers Arrested Protesting Outside Shareholder Meeting’ seems to be an illustration of this degree symbol.

Imagehttp://thinkprogress.org/economy/2014/05/22/3440384/arrests-mcdonalds-protests/

The tension of the still ongoing Uranus Pluto square is enlarged through, a third square from Jupiter, and a fourth arm with Vesta and Ceres-two voices who speak for the earth and the ancient rites and rights of women.   This will be an interesting combination for those who are stretched to their limit on low wages. Jupiter in Cancer is about food and the people. Pluto in opposition might be a stand in for the plutocrats who run corporations. Jupiter and Pluto are brothers but brothers often in conflict.   Uranus in Aries, is the angry revolutionary in this combination, his opposition to the asteroids in Libra suggest those ancient forces so long forgotten may be rising to the surface.

And Rabia replied

I am eating the bread of this world and doing the work of that world .’ Poet Rabia of Basra, born around 717 CE

 Image

http://sufipoetry.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/rabia.jpg

The quote from the Sufi poet of Persia, Rabia says much about this season and, the opportunities it offers.  It is a season of earthy pleasures, the sensuality of the earth is opening all around us, this world.  At the same time, it promises a deep connection the world we have forgotten, that world, where we come from and to which we will return.

This is a busy time in the cosmos. We have just experienced (Wednesday, April 23rd) an exact square of four powerful planets.   We are still in range of that combination during this new Moon which is also a solar eclipse. This eclipse will be visible in Antarctica, Australia and the Southwestern Pacific and Indian Oceans. For the moment the light and influence of the Sun is cut off from the earth. This makes a new Moon during a solar eclipse especially a moment of new beginnings, a chance to start over from the point of view of both Sun and Moon. We are cut off from our source of light and life and then come back into the stream of the Sun’s rays, which fertilize our plans and our gardens.

Solar eclipse in Taurus

We are in the lovely season of Taurus, and the song of birds and our own hearts can be heard here in the Northern Hemisphere where spring is firmly anchored. Beltane celebrations welcome the fire of the earth element. Beltane is the link between this world and the world of Faerie, nature spirits, devas. In order for the earth to be fruitful, it is necessary to work in alliance with this other world.   Because the earth has been so injured and ignored by the human realm, many of the invisible world have given up hope, and have retreated to another dimension and time. The Fire Festivals, especially Beltane, provide gates between our two worlds of existence. In the Southern Hemisphere, this is the season of Samhain, when the otherworld is most accessible to those who listen and feel for the earth’s heartbeat. Beltane festival takes place as the Pleiades rise at dawn. The sisters have returned to daylight.

 Image

‘… the grey Dawn and the Pleiades before him danced, Shedding sweet influence.’ — John Milton

The full Moon of Scorpio on May 14th will occur quite soon after the Beltane degree (15° Taurus) has been reached. Now is the time to begin the song and dance of earth praise and connection, and I will further explore the cosmic powers of Beltane at the full Moon.   It is a time of appreciation for our bodies, for the food we eat, for the natural world into which we are interwoven. It is the season of the Lady who walks the land and where her foot falls, spring up the white flowers of the trefoil.

I married Isis on the fifth day of May

But I could not hold on to her very long

So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away

For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong. — Bob Dylan

You may experience, or continue to experience the powerful energies of the Grand Cross in Cardinal signs. Uranus and Mars continue to provide the shock and surprise element in the signs of the Self (Aries) and the other (Libra).   Pluto and Jupiter continue their exploration of opposite signs; one to remake the workplace, and the other to deepen our connection to home life.   Mercury is pressed close to the Taurus Sun and Moon and may sing lyrics never heard before. The potential of this time opens our eyes to the choices we make moment by moment to remake the world, a kinder and ever more creative place, where all are aware of their interconnection.   The Sabian Symbol for this new Moon and Solar eclipse is: ‘ A fully decorated Christmas tree; the ability to create inner happiness in dark hours.’

This total lunar eclipse is the first of four total lunar eclipses over the next two years. You can find out more about the astronomical and traditional significance of these eclipses at this site: http://earthsky.org/space/what-is-a-blood-moon-lunar-eclipses-2014-2015. But this tax day eclipse is a cornucopia of excitement and action contained within its planetary patterns. It can already be felt as I write this and will reverberate long afterwards as well. The Moon has several companions, who give an earth consciousness message to this full Moon and eclipse. Ceres is exact to the degree of the Moon and represents the earth as mother, our home and provider. Her Greek name is Demeter, and, she has been involved in the pattern of new and full Moon charts over the last few months and year. She is the mother who mourns for her daughter, Persephone, and who brought winter to the earth in her sorrow.

The other very close companion to Moon and Ceres is Vesta. She is goddess of the hearth, the place where the law of women is found no matter how repressive the outer society.   She represents the mysteries of women, which were squashed and supplanted by patriarchal invaders of the Mediterranean region five thousand years ago.   In Roman society the vestal virgins were priestesses who kept the fires sacred to Vesta, and performed secret rites as students, and teachers of her mysteries. After thirty years service they could leave, marry and own property. Presently we are in the middle of a conversation about the role of women in society, government and as head of the family. Vesta and Demeter represent two personae that women play everywhere. They are in charge of fertility, food, and new life, but they are also seen as the arbiters of societal relationships and the mystery of the human body and the body of the earth. The crisis around the health of the planet, and our relationship to the earth becomes central as they take center stage with the full Moon this month.

Across the way, the companion of the Sun is Juno, Jupiter’s wife, she who has rule over the relationships between men and women. She represents the revolution ongoing between us.

And of course, Moon, Mars, and the two deities, Ceres and Vesta are all located in the sign of Libra, which is about balance, about relationship, about marriage, about justice. Venus, presently sandwiched between Neptune and Chiron in Pisces, rules Libra. The healing power of Chiron is perhaps through the path of universal love (Pisces) and the spiritual power of music and release (Neptune). And now we must look at the very powerful energies of the planetary squares underway. Uranus, the revolutionary, is about to make another perfect square to Pluto—he who will not be ignored or turned back. Uranus is quite violent in Aries, and is at this moment, conjunct Mercury. We have seen a series of angry confrontations between demonstrators, counter demonstrators, police and world leaders. Pluto in Capricorn exacerbates whatever tension exists in corporate and political spheres. From clients and friends I hear of angry clashes in the work place, Capricorn. Mercury, conjunct Uranus in Aries, is not diplomatic, and war talk, between individuals and nations can be expected. Perhaps the fact that Mars (ruler of Aries) is in Libra will balance out the quick and hostile anger that can arise from all this Aries energy! In a few days, Mars, in retrograde, will form an exact grand cross with Uranus, Pluto, and Jupiter. The potential for manifestation of good and bad is great. Jupiter is opposite Pluto in the sign of Cancer. There is an expansion of family concerns. Pluto and Jupiter are brothers. Jupiter rules the upper world; Pluto ruled the underworld. They are equal in power, although not always in visibility. Once again we are given the opportunity to contemplate our relationship to opposite forces. The more we can absorb difference in ourselves and society, the more likely that this can be a time of deep human evolution. With our huge population, we have no choice but to move as lightly as possible, to dance together.   This Aries Sun and Libra Moon are symbolic of the forces to harmonize and to differentiate, which we all experience, and must finally move beyond. The Sabian Symbol for the Sun speaks to the moment, and is beautifully illustrated by the Rider-Waite X of Wands: ‘A man possessed of more gifts than he can hold: obsession by potentiality.’

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon can sum up this chart, which ricochets between Aries and Libra, Venus and Mars: ‘An eagle and a large white dove change into each other.’   Sabian Symbols are from An Astrological Mandala by Dane Rudhyar.
