A New Moon as Aquarius Ends and a New Year begins!

The North Wind Doth Blow

The north wind doth blow,

And we shall have snow,

And what will the robin do then,

poor thing?

He’ll sit in a barn,

And keep himself warm,

And hide his head under his wing,

poor thing!

As an attempt at sympathetic magic, I chose this picture of a Robin on a better day. Here in the Boston area, I can’t get to my birdfeeder because of snowfall above my waist. There are very few barns or any open buildings to use as shelter. Robins traditionally left for the winter because they are meat eater (bugs, worms), but with global climate change, Canadian Robins now come here for the winter. That was a mistake this year with record snowfall and achingly cold days. Please send out warming thoughts for our birds, and other small animals as they attempt to survive until a warm day opens a way to food and shelter.

As for humans left out in the cold: ‘The City of Boston recognizes that winter storms and extreme cold weather place homeless people who suffer from medical/behavioral health problems may be particularly at risk if they are exposed to extreme weather conditions. Please be vigilant and dial 911 if you suspect an individual is suffering hypothermia, from frostbite, or is in need of services.’

Will the new Moon on Wednesday, bring a yearned for change in your life, or improve the chances of a sparrow to make it to spring?   It’s a new Moon in the last degree of Aquarius, the second new Moon in this sign. Moments later Sun and Moon will enter the sign of Pisces.   This is the fifth consecutive new Moon in either the first or last degree of a constellation. We stand at the edge of the limits of our imagination.

VII of Swords Wild UnknownWild Unknown version of the VII of Swords

Both of these versions of the VII of Swords illustrate the possibilities of this new Moon at 29º Aquarius. It is time to try new solutions for old problems.   Instead of fighting a pitched battle head to head, it might be wiser to ‘disarm’ the enemy.   The human figure in the Rider-Waite deck evens the odds in a forthcoming tournament. The fox knows his strength, has a variety of strategies, and keeps a weapon close at hand despite his apparent hibernation. Like the Swords, Aquarius is an air sign, with the possibility of a new thought process.

New Moon in Aquarius 2015

This new Moon takes place at the mid-point of the ongoing square between Uranus and Pluto.   This square has colored much of the last few years, just as the conjunction between the two describes the events which took place in the late 1960’s.   A good deal of heat is created when these planets interact, but it is not necessarily a heat which sheds light on complex situations. Standing at the fulcrum between them might be the wisest, if not the most comfortable way to deal with the tension. There are several important negotiations taking place in the world at the present time….Ukraine and Iran, Syria and Iraq present us with models of delicate situations which require tender diplomacy. In our personal lives this might be just as true.

Saturn is in square to the Sun and Moon. He is the lord of the sign, Aquarius.   Saturn is cruising through Sagittarius at the moment and injects fire, and a sometimes inflated knowledge of the divine plan. Saturn in Sagittarius can be tolerant and all-inclusive, or dogmatic and fanatical about spiritual doctrine. Saturn is also in square to mystical Neptune, very much at home in Pisces. Perhaps the sterner expression of Saturn in Sagittarius might be softened with this contact. This might be the time we could all look at our fondest beliefs to see where they might be expanded and transformed.

Mars and Venus are tightly conjunct in Pisces. When these planets come together, there is a potential for integration. They represent the female energy of attraction and the driving force of male energy entwined…a basic condition for all students of esoteric knowledge.

The Sabian Symbol for this degree is long and abstract, rather than visual, but very much in tune with the chart. ‘Deeply Rooted In The Past Of A Very Ancient Culture, A Spiritual Brotherhood In Which Many Individual Minds Are Merged Into The Glowing Light Of A Unanimous Consciousness Is Revealed To One Who Has Emerged Successfully From His Metamorphosis. KEYNOTE: The ability for the person with an open mind and a deep feeling for self-transcendence to come in contact with higher forms of existence. Conscious totality of being.’ (from The Astrology of Personality, Dane Rudhyar).

This is the Moon that marks Chinese new year of the Goat or Sheep. Celebration for a new Moon and new year begins Wednesday….

Ice and Imbolc full Moon in Leo.

The Rowan tree celebrates the festival of Imbolc (Ground Hog’s Day, Candlemass Day) and offers us the protection of her pentacle on each berry. The birds are grateful for these berries, and feed on them until spring comes with new food.

The full Moon in Leo is the opportunity to feel our own creative power, balanced with the needs and creativity of the community (Aquarius Sun). This particular full Moon is in the company of Jupiter, who expands the already generous and creative energy of the Leo Moon. This warms and stimulates the cool, airy Sun and retrograde Mercury in Aquarius. Traditionally, Sun in Aquarius is considered diminished because he is opposite the Sun’s home sign, Leo. And, for us in the Northern Hemisphere, his rays are feeble during Aquarian days in January and February. Yet when Aquarian Sun and Leo Moon face one another, as they will this Tuesday there is an excitement and growing sense of light and heat returning! Aquarius Sun/Leo Moon dazzles with new ideas, innovation. Jupiter with the Moon and Mercury with the Sun increase the desire to communicate in a generous way.

Snowdrop

This year the Rowan full Moon takes place during the celebration of Imbolc, one of the most important holidays in the Druid’s calendar. This is a celebration of the goddess Bride, midwife, healer, poet and smith. It is a holiday dedicated to feminine energy, but on a very wide spectrum. Perhaps, since this celebration takes place during the time Aquarius, a masculine, but androgynous sign, we can better understand ‘the feminine’ as a symbol of humanity.

Dorothy McLean, one of the founders of Findhorn speaks for the Snowdrop in her Seeds of Inspiration:

I am glad that you have to contact, mfor although my forces here are tenuous, the contact is one that I am glad to renew……A tender regard from humans means much in our worlds.

Imbolc means ewe’s milk. At this time lambs are born in the dark barn of winter. The Snowdrop pushes her way through the snow to celebrate this turning point in the year, when we at last begin to collect daylight with later sunsets and earlier sunrise. Imbolc is the chance to give thanks for a glimpse of faraway spring, it’s Groundhog Day, and winter is on the way out the door.

Here’s my Imbolc poem!

Imbolc

The Full Moon is buried in our lungs,

she breathes with us. Our heart’s in a hurry

to keep up with the passage of sweet air

as it fills and empties from the magic chest

held within, the holy ghost, the spirit place

the toolbox, the home sweet home.

The White Lady draws nigh,

evening comes later. Feel her

breath as she approaches,

leaves muddy footprints in the new snow,

and promises that someday, one day

spring will be here, hot, with chill overtones.

Soundless, she is the moss under crystal,

treasure of February glass on small ponds,

a bird of early arrival, the fox,

as he leaves his lair to venture forth

on a cold morning with breakfast

in mind after long hunger.

Uranus in Aries makes a fiery trine to the Moon and a helpful sextile to the Sun. He continues to square Pluto and we continue to feel the déjà vu of issues fought out in the late sixties when these two were in conjunction. Mars and Chiron are sextile to Pluto and Ceres and they form a Yod to the Moon-Jupiter combination. A Yod is a finger of energy focused upon a point in the chart where we might overlook the significance of a planet(s) placement.   This Yod furthers the powerful drive towards a shift in consciousness, which must occur in each of us if we are to imagine, and then manifest, beyond dualism towards unity. .   The challenge of this time is in Rumi’s famous quote: ‘Out beyond ideas of wrong and right, there is a field.  I’ll meet you there.’

Leo Full Moon 2015`

Leo rules the heart and the spine, love and courage, Aquarius, the ankles and the circulation system, support and movement within. Aquarius moves our perceptions beyond gender, race or nationality. As we enter the ‘Age of Aquarius,’ which lasts around two thousand years, we see a deep shift from the duality of two sexes to a spectrum view of male and female. Our culture’s change of view on gay, lesbian and trans gender realities is a reflection of this.   Leo gives the joyful experience of self-acceptance and full expression. We are about to experience our own creativity as it intertwines with the larger Aquarius/Leo experience.
