Sky Bowl

photo: Sarah Fuhro

On Sunday January 2nd, there will be a new Moon to celebrate the new year of 2022. The placement of planets, Sun and Moon is arranged in a perfect bowl shape with edges held by the Lunar Nodes… markers for Sun and Moon eclipse. Where I live, the bowl is located perfectly on the horizon of the chart. It looks like a vessel releasing its contents on all below. Where you live it might be at a different tilt, but still a perfect half circle! Central in the chart is Saturn in his sign of rulership, Aquarius. He is also the ruler of Sun and Moon’s Zodiac sign, Capricorn. Saturn is the teacher who helps us to do the hard work of this planet. We have once more found ourselves in a place of renewed pandemic. The construction of a safe environment for everyone on Earth was circumscribed and short changed, and the price for that is continued illness and isolation.

What does this bowl hold, or spill for our planet, weary with plague, and fear blind to the beauty around us? Each moment has the potential to change how we see everything. Ice changes to water droplets, and then to fog. On a December morning in New England, I found honeysuckle blossoms, decorated by jewels of ice, which quickly turned to drops of moisture, each a tiny world.

The dark of the Moon in Capricorn has the potential to be emotionally complicated. We have experienced the winter solstice. The Sun is returning to the Northern Hemisphere, yet the cold days of winter have only begun. Solstice festivities and New Year warm us with food and light if we are fortunate. The Sun is busy elsewhere. The Moon, our emotional body is dark and only visible as a sliver in the early morning sky as she prepares to disappear into Capricorn, a sign where the Moon is weak and uncomfortable, traditionally. She will sail into fullness in Cancer, her sign of rulership in two short weeks, filling the winter sky with light.

Chiron, the doctor is poised to help the Sun/Moon combination to plant their new cycle in health and consciousness. Uranus, says: Try something new, something revolutionary and Earth centered. Mars promises his fiery energy to assist in whatever the luminaries might dream up in their wedding chamber.

The Sabian Symbol for this moment suggests we have everything we need to crystallize the creative power of this moment : ‘A fire worshiper meditates on the ultimate realities of of existence.’

This morning a friend, Jean Svizzero sent a poem, which I found so powerful, and so expressive of this moment of dark Moon, and I want to share it with you.

‘Don’t be deceived by the sun.
It is made of dark matter
veiled in fire,
just as you are.
Conspire with the roots
that clutch your life down
into burnt umber loam.
All bodies are spun from this hunger
for the pit of sweetness.
What are a thousand yellow petals
in your cerebellum
or the scent of frangipani garlands
in the back of your throat
compared to the yearning
of the shadow for its cause?
Find your sap in hollow places
where larvae dream of rainbow wings
and seeds lie awake in their tombs
witnessing the luminous breath
of Winter.
When you are very quiet
you will hear them throbbing
through the long thin night,
and you will be healed
by your loss.

Saturday’s full Moon in Gemini (Air mental) urges us to cross an emotional (Water) barrier, Pisces. Someone (earthy Virgo) in another time built a bridge to make this easy, , but it will take the Fire of intuition in Sagittarius to urge each of us across, like goats going to a new pasture….Capricorn, and the Winter Solstice. .

There is a powerful angle of tension between what is old and what is new at this full Moon. Uranus and Saturn are in a square, which gives us energy from two very different planets and signs. Yet they are located in territory where they may have more understanding and sympathy of each other’s plans and goals. Uranus, who loves the shake up of revolution is in the steady earth sign of Taurus, while Saturn who supports and admires the past and a firm foundation is in Aquarius, the sign of future vision.

You might find this is a time of return, a return to passions which you had forgotten and now are beckoning to you with fresh energy. You may be involved in a deep transition, and now find that everything around you has undergone Metamorphosis….the key word for Jupiter’s location. It’s as if you have been led, blindfolded in an initiation rite. Now in an unknown location, you are face to face with a huge change in your environment and your daily life… ‘In spiritual terms, this implies entering a higher realm of conscious existence and there joining a sacred Company.’ Sabian Symbol for 28 degrees of Aquarius.

Even familiar objects and people may seem unfamiliar in this new environment, because of the transformation which has taken place. There is the influence of Neptune in all of this as well…The Sea God reminds us that we really don’t know this planet and move through life ‘as a stranger in a strange land.’

Seen in the context that this is humanity’s transformation, not just yours, you may feel more at home. Spiritual development implies a greater identification with all of humanity and the natural world on this very beautiful planet. Everything seems run on the energy of coincidence, synchronicity, the helpfulness of the universe.

This is a time of focused light travel. Sagittarius is that period when we leave our dance and appreciation of darkness in Scorpio and enter the focused journey towards the light of the Solstice. We carry our actions and words in a large bundle on our back, like Santa Claus! Whatever we wanted to discard comes along, and like the crisis we have with the trash from our civilization has to be looked at, acknowledged and dealt with or it will overwhelm and define us.

For many years I thought this stone sculpture at Halibut Point in Rockport was a king. But the last time I visited I noticed, he was a peddler, with a heavy sack on his back. And so also this new Moon which takes place in a solar eclipse is both bright and dark. Sagittarius is a fire sign, the light which guides us towards the crack of light which is the moment of the Solstice, 0 degrees of Capricorn. It is a sign during which we can take stock of the load we carry, but cannot see, because it is held behind us.

The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon is ‘a widow’s past brought to light.’ ‘It is possible to joyously herald the dawn from high above the actual stresses of existence, but the new day may be found loaded and darkened by the unfinished business of many a yesterday.’*

Sagittarius is the shaman, the priestess, the peddler who brings us to the light of new insights, but then it never stops there. Each of us is a channel for the light we have forgotten. We all have Sagittarius in our chart, and where it is located and which planets live there, will help us understand this period of dark and light healing.

Let the soul banish all that disturbs; and let the body that envelops it be still, and all the fretting of the body, and all that surrounds it; let earth and sea and air be still; and heaven itself. And then feel the Spirit streaming, pouring, rushing into you from all sides, while you are quiet in this Peace.’ Plotinus
