Winged Amelia in cornfield

Morning dew is mysterious and fleeting.   The Sun takes those droplets back into his breast, but the memory of a new beginning gives us hope. According to the Sabian Symbol for the degree of this full Moon: ‘EARLY MORNING DEW SPARKLES AS SUNLIGHT FLOODS THE FIELD.  KEYNOTE: The exalted feeling that rises within the soul of the individual who has successfully passed through the long night which has tested his strength and his faith. …dew is blessed with the light of significance by the rising sun of the new day. Even tears can be transformed into jewels in the light of victory over night and sorrow.’     The U.S.  presidential unauguration, which ushered in the waxing half Moon of this lunar cycle gave us the fresh start we yearn for, and now, in the season of Imbolc,  Groundhog’s Day, Candlemass gives us the hope to celebrate the early morning of a new season!

Four candles for Bride

Full Moon tomorrow issues in the season of Imbolc, when the snow is touched by the goddess Bride and becomes the promise of spring,  Snow Drops and Skunk Cabbage  Here in New England we’ve had our first real snow to test Brighid’s candles.  And one of the beautiful aspects of living in the frozen North is the hope that is held in this ancient holiday, the first sign of spring.

The Earth knows Bridget is here, even though she must be seen through a heart shaped keyhole of icy branches on a cold day!  In the tree limbs and roots is the hidden warmth of the fiery Leo full Moon.  But this image might also refer to how much we can see of any moment in time.  The picture of the future is always partial and open to misinterpretation.

The Aquarian Sun who shines upon the full face of the Leo Moon is squeezed between Jupiter and Saturn.   Much like the season, this suggests hot and cold, expansion, contraction, hope and the hard work of attaining something solid we might dream of attaining as the Earth opens to warmth and growth.   Saturn is the original ruler of Aquarius, but not to be left out the newly assigned planet co-ruler, Uranus in the company of Mars and Black Moon Lilith,  makes a neat square to the Sun and Moon.   Don’t expect this full Moon  moment to be simple.  On the Winter Solstice, Jupiter and Saturn conjoined in a great conjunction to begin a series of cycles which we all have a hand in creating.   While it feels hopeful to experience the new cycle in the realm of Airy Aquarius, much of the years suffering and suppression under Corvid 19, remains to be dealt with.

Full Moon in Leo 2021

What might a square to the Sun and Moon from Uranus and Mars and Black Moon Lilith symbolize?   Is there an unexpected danger from unexplored anger lurking in the wings?  Sun and Moon are called the ‘luminaries,’ the lights.  We feel their very different forms of light first in an astrology chart. But we know there are other actors in the dark.  Perhaps this is why we call upon the lights of the local gods to protect us from what is difficult to see.  A square in astrology is between planets who cannot see each other well, yet are connected by degree and so tend to overlook or fear, what is not easy to visualize.

The woundedness of women, and the feminine is  symbolized by Black Moon Lilith and Eris,  new additions to the astrology chart.  Imbolc is a festival particular to women and the goddess, Bride.  It is sacred to child birth and to milk of new born lambs.  Chiron is another who reminds we are all wounded in some form or another.  The world of trauma is studied in depth and is reflected back in the astrology chart.  As much as our trauma has wounded, it has also given us a view of how we might heal ourself and others, and how strong we are.    Chiron who is located in warrior energy Airies in this chart makes a close connection to Sun and Moon.  Crying doesn’t work well with Chiron in Aries.  Those born with this particular configuration were not heard when they complained, and so they learned to move on quickly. Now that Chiron is back in Aries,  we are given the opportunity to focus on the healing promise of Bride in this moment of bright winter light.

‘I bath thy palms in showers of wine, In the lustral fire, In the seven elements, In the juice of the rasps, In the milk of honey, And I place the nine pure choice graces In thy fair fond face.

Dark is yonder town, Dark are those therein, Thou art the brown swan, Going in among them.  Their hearts are under they control, Their tongues are beneath thy sole, Nor will they every utter a word To give thee offense.

Thine is the skill of the Fairy Woman, Thine is the virtue of Bride the calm, Thine is the faith of Mary the mild, Thine is the tact of the woman of Greece, Thine is the beauty of Emir the lovely, Thine is the courage of Maebh the strong.’

Inauguration 2021

This is the astrology chart for the moment of the inauguration tomorrow, and want to share some ideas with all of you. The Sun is situated in the very first degree of Aquarius. This is where the Jupiter Saturn conjunction took place at the moment of the Winter Solstice last December. Do you remember all the excitement about that? That conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn begins a twenty year cycle, but also a new cycle of two hundred years because they were meeting in new place in a new element, Air, rather than Earth.

There is the Aquarian Sun at the top of chart at noon. I would like to say that Pluto on one side and Saturn on the other are guardians of that Sun, but it might also represent ‘between a rock and hard place.’ A position President elect Biden has been occupying since the election. The Sun is at the first degree of a new sign, but the Moon is just finishing a journey through Aries. Hmmm that means the ceremony will begin at a moment when the Moon is considered ‘void of course.’ This refers to the fact that the Moon has no relationship with other planets until she moves into Taurus at 1:56 tomorrow. At that point we can call this moment another cosmic ritual point. Take a deep breath at that moment of Moon’s entry into Taurus. At that point, the Moon will be a perfect half Moon on the way to a full expression in Leo on January 28. This hesitation of a void of course Moon suggests that as much as Biden has tried to set up his presidency with no help from any of the usual sources, he will find his stride of Male (Sun in Aquarius) and Female energies (Moon in Taurus) in the near future.

The Ascendant is in Taurus. This is the sign of the Earth, our Mother. It is also the sign where the Moon is in her ‘joy.’ Sounds good because we have plundered Earth long enough.

What about racial justice? Can we hope for some actual transformation? Will we ever live with each other, work with each other, revel in the good fortune we have to be a multiracial multicultural nation? What hope or stumbling blocks might be seen in this chart?

Neptune and Ceres, the Earth Mother, are in perfect contact. Neptune might represent ‘I have a dream,’ while Demeter says: ‘there is only one race, and you are all my beloved children. You have been pulled into the dark hell of racism. Black history is not the same as White history in America. At any moment you can emerge from this four hundred year hell to begin a nation which offers liberty and justice for all.’

Neptune and Ceres are also in a close connection to the Moon’s nodes. This holds potential for the discovery of unpleasant truths….this is a time of reckoning. I suspect this will involve the mess and crimes left by the Trump administration, and the truth of racial injustice with its daily consequences.

Watch this moment. I feel so lucky to have survived the last four years of terrible truths. Hope it will be a rebirth for us all.

Entry to Pluto's Land
photo: Bruce Lhuillier

This New Moon will take place one degree from Pluto, otherwise known as Hades, Lord of the Underworld, the Great Transformer. Hades’ territory is as large as that ruled by his brother, Jupiter (Zeus), but it has different rules. Few visit Hades, but one was Orpheus, the most wonderful musician of all times. He went into the Underworld, and played for Hades and Persephone hoping they might release his darling, Eurydace. Persephone said ‘yes’ he could leave with her, but only if he did not look back until he was out of the Underground. He was fine. He was out of the entry, but when he looked back, Eurydace was still in the Dark Lands and had to return. What happens when a new Moon begins at the very doorstep of Pluto?

The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon is ‘a woman entering a convent.’  Entering a convent has some similtary to a period of residence in the Underworld. This period of new Moon energy is filled with challenge, a possibility of strife. It’s important to realize this if you feel as if there are sudden reasons to be angry and confrontational with people you normally love or, at least tolerate, you might want to take that energy on other directions. The Lady of Chaos, Eris has a direct and strong link to the Sun/Moon Pluto trio. She who felt overlooked, wrecked havoc on Greece and the city of Troy. But to be honest, it was the Greeks and Trojans who murdered each other. Hurt and anger are powerful forces which work together to destroy connection or create new understanding in relationships.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass the world is too full to talk about. RUMI

Maybe the ancient people were right when they identified their animal side. I always hate to hear the phrase: ‘only humans….’ We are firmly in the animal kingdom. We need that animal nature for humor and survival. The amount of connection between the planets at this moment is a challenge to see how we can use Mars and Uranus and Lilith as a power source instead of electric shock treatment. There is lots of talk among some astrologers that this is a turning point in human capacity for helpful transformation. Maybe. But it doesn’t seem likely that this will happen while we are asleep. The whole world has a challenge with the new Moon and the other cosmic players as they begin a new cycle. Each moment there is an opportunity to find a solution to the shock and pressure coming from a perfect set up of ancient planetary impulses.

New Moon in Capricorn 2021

This is a chart with so many connections between planets.   Perhaps this is a signal which says even very small or ‘mundane’ decisions with be deeply embedded in the future.

Here is the painting by Amelia Royce Leonards for CAPRICORN.

Capricorn Amelia

painting: Amelia Royce Leonards

Capricorn is very definitely an Earth sign. Full of inborn knowledge of how the world works, Capricorn is called The Goat, but actually she is traditionally a Sea Goat! At first, what  we know of Capricorn appears to be above ground: visible, tangible, safe from Water’s dark mystery.  This is a sign dedicated to the very solid Earth element, yet the symbol of Capricorn is a goat with a fish’s tail.  Capricorn retrieves what was lost from sight in Scorpio’s dark waters.  At the moment of the Solstice, we celebrate the promise of light and vision felt in spirit form during the long nights of Sagittarius.  Manifestation is the power of this goat/fish.  Keenly aware of darkness, Capricorn climbs to a high point to observe the return of the Sun’s light.
