As Sun and Moon enter Gemini together and begin a new lunar cycle, we may feel a tangible shift from the winter’s weight of all those planets in Earthy Capricorn.  Pluto and Jupiter remain in Capricorn to help us create new organizations, but Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Vesta and the North Node are now positioned in Gemini, which is fresh and bright like the spring air. Breath deeply of that spring air,  because we still need to support our lungs (Gemini) which have been  under attack from Covid 19.

Capricorn, has sent us Earth antidotes to the disease which has rocked our world.  My yard is full of Mullein, an herb with medicinal properties to support the lungs. Plants speak to us through their presence in our environment, and the astrological signatures they carry.    The soft furry leaves of Mullein are like the interior of a healthy lung, with lots of surface openings.

But of course the moment is not just a breath of fresh air.   Saturn with his insistence on structure and timing is in close connection to the Sun and Moon.   I wonder: is Saturn linked to the mental powers of Gemini to help us  transform after the siege from the Corona Virus?  This was a world wide plague.  No humans were left untouched, and now there is the question of where do we go from here.   Gemini is vision, and Saturn, now in his sign of Aquarius is the new form it will take.  Very close to Saturn is the asteroid Pallas Athena, she who supports and protects the immune system, and we might hope to have some medical breakthroughs during this period.

The plague has not retreated and will continue to be felt with Neptune at the center of this bowl shaped astrology chart.  There is the spirit aspect of this time.  We are traveling a barely lit path, and need to turn inward for the guidance as to where to take our next step.

The Sabian Symbol of the degree for this Sun and Moon at this moment says it very clearly….’Les Garden des Tuileries, The formalization of collective ideals through the application of reason and order to newly discovered aspects of nature.’   What can we make of this moment in time?  The potential for chaos is also clearly delineated in this chart.   What do we want our new world to look like?

And now for the illustration of the sign of Gemini illustrated by Amelia Leonards.  This will be part of the Astrology Oracle Deck we have been creating together since January!

Gemini is Airy and Mutable, changeable and yet always a good friend.  Ruled by Mercury nothing stays the same for long  in Gemini’s realm.  And, yet, the symbol of Gemini, the delicate butterfly migrates for thousands of miles over land and sea to arrive at a destination of ancestral community. Gemini is sociable and interested in many flowers, much like the butterfly.  Our thoughts are received and then expressed through Gemini’s ruler, Mercury.  Gemini urges us to explore through words, thoughts, messages, and communication, and most of all: curiosity.   The Air element is felt in the wind, but the wind itself is invisible, only the effects can be seen and experienced.    Castor and Pollux, the constellation of Gemini, the twins are the special protectors of sailors. And this may be the best way to understand  the role of Gemini in our chart.  Gemini does not drown in the mutability of the deep sea.  Air is associated with our mental, windy, ever changing thoughts, but Air, like the suit of Swords in the Tarot deck seeks clarity, sharpness, the final word. Thoughts create action, dreams, visions, speech, poetry.  But try to meditate, and you quickly learn about the Gemini twins and Mercury.  They will not stay still, and they do not want to be classified and filed away. Our thoughts can be ruthless in their fixity or flighty as memories we cannot recall. This constellation represents the twins Castor and Pollux.  The twins had two fathers, but were hatched from a single egg.  Castor, the son of King Tyndareus was mortal, Pollux  the son of Zeus was a demi god.  This represents our own dual nature.  We are mortal, but are filled with immortal spirit.

Heron feeding young

photo: Robert Fuhro

Over the last few weeks I have been watching some herons as they build nests, sit on their eggs, and now feed their chicks.  Each visit to their swamp, I am awestruck by these huge birds who gracefully use the Air element as if it were as solid as Earth, or as supportive as Water.  Yesterday food was transferred to ravenous babies with wide open beaks.  This Gemini new Moon might mean we are all hungry for food from the teacher, Hermes/Mercury.  This is an opportunity to focus on what is available to nurture us, and what we have to share with someone who might need nurturance from us.

Mercury the planet who directs Gemini, is known as a trickster.  Teachers come in a variety of forms.   Some teach as directly as the heron feeds her chick, some teach through painful illusions.  At this time, as Saturn approaches Pluto, we can expect some very powerful lessons.   The old question of what to wish for, becomes paramount.

Neptune is in a square to the new Moon in Gemini.  The image for this planet’s degree in the chart is: A MASTER INSTRUCTING HIS DISCIPLE.   In the beautiful photo above,  water has a chaotic lesson to teach.  There is no clear direction or flow.  Gemini energy is often like this, with ‘yes’ and ‘no’ bouncing back and forth through the brain.  Our teacher pushes us in opposite directions with equal force.

New Moon in Gemini 2019

Maybe the one lesson we can absorb right now is Liberation from the Past.  Tomorrow as the Moon begins her new cycle we will see only the light of the Sun.  The seed Moon in Gemini will be lost in the brilliant light of her companion until  she moves out from under his beams and travels on her own, and one clear twilight evening we will see her set in the West….
