 Rowan’s Invitation to New Realms

“You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves…..” Mary Oliver

New Moon in Rowan 2015

Last month the new Moon began with the first degree of Capricorn, hours after the Winter Solstice. What a brilliant package of cosmic activation! Once again, the beginning of the Lunar Cycle and the entry of the Sun into a new constellation coincide. Aquarius Sun and new Moon are located at 00 degrees. Same message, but in Aquarian flavor. Celebrate the opportunity for a new start with a special ritual or song! Find someplace in your life, where you have postponed exploration. Capricorn suggests looking to the past for ancestral inspiration. Aquarius is ready for novel exploration.

Saturn

Saturn guides both signs, and he makes a nice connection to the Sun and Moon from his perch in Sagittarius. When Saturn is visiting Sagittarius, he tries to make himself comfortable through orthodox belief systems, while at the same time he is fascinated with an ideal future. Saturn is closing in on a square to Mars and Neptune. This makes the frenetic desire for an agreed upon philosophical or religious truth quite messy and confusing. The impulse to get everyone in agreement runs into the vagaries of Neptune and the diffuse anger of Mars in Pisces conjunct Neptune. It may seems obvious that the terrorism of ISIL and the recent violence in France is not conducive to the cause and long term goals of those involved, but what about our own more insular desires to be ‘right’?

This is the Moon of Rowan (Mountain Ash in America) or Luis. The Rowan tree has a connection to the realm of the Fae. She is the sacred tree of Imbolc which will take place at the time of the full Moon. It suggests both enchantment (Neptune) and protection from the power of enchantment though the Star of Venus. While the earth in Northern places is frozen, The Moon of Luis is a traditional time to venture into the lands of unknown places in vision and dream, but don’t forget the way back!

Alban Arthan - offering

Our Alban Arthan was held on Saturday 20th December, officially the solstice was on the Sunday, but as with most of the festivals, it can be taken as a period of time rather than a single fixed point. At this time of year the sun seems to rise and fall at the same places on the horizon for around three days, as though it’s dithering about increasing it’s strength, like a newly lit candle.

This festival is all about the return of the light, and the focal point of the ceremony is the extinguishing and relighting of flames. The tension in both making and nurturing the new light, seems to reflect the sun’s hesitation, and reinforces the fragility of the newborn Mabon. There is the promise of warmer and lighter days to come, but we still have months of darkness and dreaming.

I thought it would be good to get…

The Birch Full Moon

Birch and moonlight

Whether or not you believe humanity is perched upon a moment of transition, this full Moon offers you an opportunity to embrace your daily life with the deep intensity of conscious choice.

Full Moon in Cancer 2015

This special event takes place at the midpoint of two Cardinal signs, Cancer and Capricorn. The Cardinal signs mark the beginning of a new season, with powerful connection to the elements they represent, in this case Water for the Moon’s sign of Cancer, and Earth for Capricorn, where the Sun resides. Both of these signs and elements are feminine.

FULL MOON INSFUSED WATER

Honor the full Moon in Cancer with consciousness that we are made of water. We can join the water within to the water in the visible world through meditation in Moonlight, and through placing a container of water for the rising full Moon to reflect upon and ‘charge.’

The Capricorn Sun stays low on the horizon. He rises late and sets early. This is the Moon of Beith (Birch), a winter tree with her white and black bark. Honor the Sun as you watch sunrise and sunset, during the Earth element sign of Capricorn.

Owl Song

The sun is the only face I see

as I travel deeper and deeper

into the snowy black-spoked

wheel of the woods. My feet

were swift in the marked path,

but then it was time to curve off,

crunch into the silent depths,

lift each step back to the surface

until I plunge in again, blade

into stone and blade into air.

A song was taking place here

in the birch grove where

I interrupt the order

of all the others,

with my thrashing steps,

and I am ordered into silence.

I look across to the sun who

is teaching at such close range

that I am drenched in radiance,

pierced with the promise of gold.

Suddenly and for all time

I am the hooded owl

who sits guardian over a path

and selects who may travel

further unnoticed and who

must be plucked and groomed

for greater attention.

Sun and Moon are, as always at the full Moon, poles apart with Moon powerful in her rulership sign of Cancer. This year the Sun began his return to the Northern Hemisphere (the Solstice) just hours before the new Moon in the sign of Capricorn. Saturn rules Capricorn, and teaches us how to manifest in the physical world, but reminds us of the limitations we will face if we take the material world as the only reality.

And speaking of another reality, the Sun is cheek and jowl with Pluto who rules the invisible world, and demands light, visitation and notice from the visible world. Cultures around the world tell stories of the necessity to go down into the dark Underworld, and discover what has been overlooked. Yet the return from this place where the Sun does not shine is equally important.   In the VIII of Cups Tarot card we have an image of this journey, into darkness and the unknown; what we don’t know, but are about to explore. The eight cups left behind on the familiar shore hold what we have developed and value, but are willing to leave behind. The Sun and Moon shine down in a promise of integration.
