This canoe is a beautiful representation of the expression ‘all in the same boat,’ the meaning of the Sabian Symbol for this Capricorn Moon. ‘The ability to use natural resources and basic skills in order to achieve a group-purpose.‘ This moment of full Moon, so soon after the Summer Solstice, suggests a new start for humanity, a determination to create a vessel ‘at the start of a journey by water.’ Cooperation is the theme of this full Moon with a joint effort between humans, animals and spirits. And with each full Moon, there is the opportunity to find cooperation between opposite signs, elements and impulses. Just as the Sun reaches his height in the Northern Hemisphere, he moves into the sign of the Moon, Cancer as if to create a balance in the power of the two luminaries.

Capricorn (the sign of the Moon) is the Earthy, wooden aspect of the expedition which is proposed by the Cancer Sun. Water is the means of movement for the proposed journey, wood is the material of the boat. With each full Moon we feel the excitement of that challenge which proposes we see opposites in a dance rather than a battle. It’s that palpable sense of being torn apart in order to become larger and more accepting of opposing parts of ourselves, situations and other people.

Love is associated with the element of Water. We can see that Venus (she of love), is also in Cancer in a tender Water trine with Neptune, love’s highest expression. But it’s Capricorn, who creates a vessel to carry love with earthy knowledge and determination. I can’t help but think of a Capricorn friend and sister Druid, Catriona McDonald, who recently took hold of problems I had with this program and with absolute concentration and determination (Capricorn) tried and finally succeeded in repairing my relationship (Cancer) to WordPress.

At the new Moon two weeks ago Mars and Pluto were were in opposition and there were a many war drums pounding in our ears, which needed to be transformed into an embrace of life force energy. Now Mars is in Leo and has set an opposition to Saturn in Aquarius. If we think about these two signs, they are the King (Mars in Leo) versus the scientist….Saturn in Aquarius. Once again we can feel and hear political voices or our own mental conversation, which can be ready to take on ‘the expert,’ and still needs the deep knowledge of the ‘master.’

Now it is Venus who is in ‘opposition’ to Pluto. Venus who will argue for love over tradition, or organization or patriarchal principles. And because she is also in the elemental connection of Water with Neptune, she can be the irresistible force which wears down the immoveable object.

Jupiter is the great turtle in this chart. When you watch the summer skies for the full Moon in Capricorn, look for Jupiter as well. He’s in a relationship with both Sun and Moon from the seas of Pisces. He may be a companion and guide in the ‘Passage of Spirits’ canoe above.

Fox paininting BL

painting: Bruce Lhuillier

I chose the Fox as a theme for this new Moon, because this animal represents so much about the sign of Gemini where the new Moon is located on Thursday. Mercury is also there, where he likes to be….Gemini is mental and versatile, with a keen sense of irony and humor. Mercury is at the top of his game when he is in Gemini. He appears and disappears much like the fox who lives all over the world, and allows his natural curiosity to take him to strange locations, urban, desert, forest. He is at home everywhere, and does not let human interference keep him away.

Reynard the Fox is a character with various names from stories around the world. He is not muscular, but he is always clever. Since this new Moon is a solar eclipse, we might see how these stories and their illustrations are also about the cosmos. We know the monarchial Lion, the Sun, will be partially devoured by repentant Reynard, but we already know, it will not stop him from the next act of trickery.

But there may be a more celestial purpose in this trickery we call foxiness! Neptune is in square to the Sun and Moon and Mercury in Gemini. This is the planet of universality, of new insights, of total confusion. As much as we all know Reynard will never change his ways, we always fall for his charm and his tears of repentance! So much going on in the patterns astrologers love to peruse!

So much going on at this moment of newness. Mars, who is almost at the end of the journey in Cancer, where is more chef than warrior, is in a face-off with menacing Pluto. Yet Earthy Capricorn Pluto is in sloshy relationship not only with watery Mars, but with Neptune. Pluto is, of course, about the Underworld and all that is dark, hidden and transformative, but he is also headed backward along with Saturn and Mercury. Perhaps they have a sacred rendezvous, a meeting which will take place as the Moon becomes embraced in the Sun’s beams, the Sun is partially devoured in eclipse. And foxy Mercury will visit the hen house!
