New Moons and Old Moons are crescents, and here on a cold day is a crescent of ice held over what looks like Arabic writing. The beauty of the Earth repeats patterns in many ways. The Astrological chart for the moment of the birth of the new Moon on Sunday contains a crescent in the pattern of the placement of the planets. And here is the most amazing part of all: the exact center point of the arc is the degree of the new Moon, the place where Sun and Moon are located…4 degrees of Pisces!!
The Sabian Symbol for the degree of the new Moon in Pisces is A Church Bazaar. This symbolizes the intertwine between what is considered ‘spiritual,’ and what is ‘material’ or even ‘commercial’! Pisces has a strong connection with attempts to separate the spiritual from the material. During the last two thousand years, the Age of Pisces, monasteries, hermitages, convents were a worldwide human concern. People entered these institutions to separate themselves from the material world. They are now largely disappearing as we move into a new Aquarian phase, where community is seen in an entirely different light.

Mars and Uranus are the two ends of this crescent. They are both in astrological signs which belong to the Earth element. So in astrological language they are ‘trine,’ which means they understand one another. This gives us all a very good opportunity to direct energy towards recognizing our kinship to the Earth, and to direct energy towards some practical gift or effort we might make to our home. This means that Uranus and Mars are in sync with the new Moon. Take a moment to ask what beautiful and daring effort in your life might begin with this new lunar cycle.

A beautiful photo from a newly returned traveler to Paris. This image expresses some eternal yearning we have for perfection and beauty, the deep sigh of Pisces.
Pisces
The finish, the end, the finale is found in Pisces. This is the eternal, wet, foggy place of the zodiac. It is here where Venus finds her exaltation, where Jupiter Lord of the high mountain, Olympus rules with Neptune of the deep sea. Nothing keeps form here, and all is expressed in contradiction, divinity and addlement. For the two fish who symbolize Pisces demand choice: will you go this way or that way, are you male or female, are you feathered or finned? This is the sign of the monastery and convent, of the ocean, of the dream. Nothing will remain when you awaken from this dream. And so you drink more, or search for a powder of power or a god or the source of a great river. Pisces rules the feet, and we all know, ‘Wisdom comes through the feet.’ Pisces is also great compassion and sweetness, the tender release of all material forms, the end of battles for right and clarity. And the soul is now in charge; plans and ambitions are forgotten, lost in the eternal swamp, where new life begins.
