Silver and Gold, a Full Moon in Leo!

On the night the Moon was a tiny crescent in the sky, I had a dream. The dream was at dawn, and was a voice and big letters, which said: ‘Au’ and ‘Ag.’  Hey, I’m not a chemist, but those are the elemental letters for Silver and Gold! ‘Why,’ I asked the Dream guys, ‘do I need to remember the elemental letters for Silver and Gold?’   No answer.

Silver is the Moon, Gold is the Sun.

Last month the full Moon was in Cancer, the Moon’s sign. The metal of the Moon is Silver, Ag, Argentum  This month the full Moon is in Leo, the Sun’s sign. Gold is the metal of the Sun, Au, Aurum, Gold.

And this is true at this season every year. Is this the year to awaken to the Silver and Gold of Cancer and Leo? Is this about Male and Female polarity? Is the Moon female, the Sun, male?

Not always.

Here is a picture of the lunar god Mên, worshipped in Asia Minor. He bears the crescents of the Moon on his shoulders, and treads the cow head of Taurus, a Moon loving zodiac sign under his horse’s hoofs. Was there a war between Male and Female lunar deities? Is there a war inside ourselves and perhaps in the evolution of culture that debates whether the Moon is male or female? It may be necessary for each of us to experience our interior self, our reflective self, our ever changing self as male and as female.

This Wednesday’s full Moon is a total eclipse of the Moon, a dramatic moment suitable to Leo, who loves theater. People often saw an eclipse as an attack on the Sun or Moon, a disappearance and reappearance of the light we live by night and day. We still experience this kind of anxiety at the time of an eclipse. It’s important to be aware of the eclipse cycle even if we can’t see it, because we can always feel it in our bodies and psyches.

This Leo Moon will also dramatically affect the tides of the ocean, because the Moon is close to the earth–a Super Moon. The Sabian Symbol for the eclipse says it very clearly: ‘A pageant, with its spectacular floats, moves along a street crowded with cheering people.’ Something, carefully planned is coming together to be expressed on a huge stage. It’s the season of Mardi Gras! This Lunar Eclipse has that feeling of unlimited excess, followed by a truth we already know. The feasting of Mardi Gras is followed by Ash Wednesday, and the traditional forty days of fasting.

Full Moon in Leo 2018

The Moon and the asteroid Ceres (Demeter, Earth goddess) are in a perfect conjunction at this moment. Demeter’s grief for her stolen child, Persephone, gave us the seasons. This year, the Leo full Moon is situated close to the festival of Imbolc, Candlemass, Groundhog’s Day, February 2. For those of us who search for a way to reconnect to the rhythms of the earth and sky, Imbolc is the time to gather and embrace the growing light. At Imbolc, the light is a crack in the darkness of winter. Imbolc is sacred to the goddess Bride, mid-wife, poet and black smith.  When the doctor told me, my baby would be born on February 2nd, I was ecstatic. My son showed up on that sacred day, and, fortunately, did not see his shadow!

Here, in the frozen or muddy North, we know the light of candles reflected in melting snow has divinatory power. Winter is not over in the North, but is touched by the Sun’s return.

Silver and Gold, Sun and Moon, light and dark play out in our lives, moment by moment. What illumination will this Sun/Moon moment hold for you? Wednesday’s total Lunar eclipse is the balance to the total Solar eclipse in Leo last August. Hold a moment to honor the ritual of this cosmic and earth time. It is like a heart we can hear beating in our throats.

The Full Moon in Pisces arrives Friday, September 16, with a healer, Chiron the centaur. If this Lunar Eclipse has a strong connection to your chart, you may experience an up swelling of pain from past experiences, but the remedy comes with the pain. We are not left to doctor ourselves, yet we must be partners in the healing process.

Mars is in square to the Sun and Moon and he has his own centaur companion, Pholus. Both Pholus and Chiron are visitors, possibly temporary visitors from outside the solar system. Each offer healing and transformation of some deep, dark aspects of our shared human experience. They seem to be connected to the ancestral realms and generational healing. They challenge us to look at tyranny, in the family, and inner dialogue.

Physical punishment, shame, and humiliation, were accepted methods of teaching children, in the home, in the school, and in religious doctrine.  They  now seem traumatic. Patriarchy and its rules of how and whom to love have begun to crumble.   Chiron and Pholus tell us there is a wound, but it must be observed, and not judged for it to heal. Will we dissolve into the tears and fears of Pisces, offering ourselves as victim and martyr, or, like the serpent in the picture above, come to accept our whole Self?  That means allowing our less beautiful, less developed facets to be included in the circle.

two-of-cupsThe serpent is part of the symbol of healing as we see in the Two of Cups. It is a reflection of our nervous system and way it wraps around the spine. But healing can only happen when there is balance. This morning a quote in French arrived in my email. The quote was by Dr. Edward Bach, the English physician who developed flower essence therapy. I was startled because it seemed so much in tune with this full Moon chart. ‘La santé dépend de notre état d’harmonie avec notre âme.’ (Health depends upon upon our harmony with our soul.)

How can harmony with the soul be depicted? The square between Saturn and Neptunefull-moon-in-pisces suggests both imagination (Neptune) and focused effort (Saturn) are involved. And then there is love, and with Venus in the sign of balance, Libra, we can take what we have learned from pain (Chiron and the Moon) and transform it through our own creativity and love. This Venus is opposite the energized combination of Uranus and Eris. We must heal our own way, despite what may feel like chaos.

Here is a friend’s message from the morning’s mail:

twisty-tree-sepia“It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.”       Wendell Berry

This chart contains the pain and the remedy, the wound and the balm. In this way we come to know ourselves as wise healers. A doctor studies disease in order to heal it, but we may have to study health in order to heal as well.

edward-bachEurope, Asia, Australia, Africa, West in South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Arctic, Antarctica will see this lunar eclipse. But we all know its power to make us feel wounded and vulnerable (Pisces Moon) and powerfully healed (Virgo Sun).   The Virgo Pisces Lunar Nodes are found in the charts of many healers, Dr. Bach was one of them. He gave up a powerful practice and reputation to go into the countryside and developed the healing power of flowers, something simple and available to the poor folk of depression eara Britain.  He believed all illness began at the etheric (emotional) level, and must be healed through the soul power of flowers and sunshine.

The theme of vulnerability and creative response  is repeated in the Saturn /Neptune square, exact at this time.  We can experience this combination as fear and anxiety or creative opportunity put into tangible form.

Jupiter (ruler of the Pisces Moon) has recently entered Libra.   The Sabian symbol for his degree speaks of the themes of this chart:

‘The transmutation of the fruits of past experiences into the seed-realizations of the forever creative spirit.’     keynote: ‘A repolarization of inner energies leading to a creative centralization of consciousness.’

enigmebody Like the sphinx we are heart and head, lion and lady.

Don’t feel just part of this full Moon chart, feel all of it, pain and healing! The Lunar Eclipse will devour the Moon, our feeling receptacle, but she will emerge triumphant and beautiful at the end The lemniscate over the Lady’s head offers the same process we began with, in knowing and acceptance of our whole person, we are eternal.
