This is what we can expect from the new Moon:  ‘Nature Spirits are seen at work in the light of sunset.’

                                                painting: Amelia Royce Leonards

But what is the ‘work’ of Nature Spirits?   And how does the light of sunset make them visible to us?    This evening as I drove to a gathering, the Sun set in front of me, casting long fingers of light…..I thought about this symbol for the new Moon, and wondered what Nature Spirits might be at work in the patches of wood land that remain along my route.

The Asteroid Ceres (Demeter), our Mother the Earth is in a warm trine with the Moon and Sun in Aries.  Is the ‘work’ of nature spirits to dance in honor of the beauty of the this planet?   Is it to mend at twilight what has been disrupted and torn during the day?  As humans wringing our hands over the fate of our planet, have we forgotten there are other realms at work in the health of the earth?

The symbol for the degree of Ceres is ‘The ground hog looking for his shadow on ground hog day.’   Ground Hog Day is Imbolc, February 2nd, the day of the goddess Bride, she who is healer, poet and black smith.  The memory of this long held sacred moment has been in the burrow of the groundhog, the bane of gardeners, and a very down to earth being, who rests all winter, and is ready to start spring on this sacred moment of Bride!    Now we are poised on the first new Moon after the Spring Equinox, to relive the miracle of rebirth in every aspect of our lives!

This morning I lit a candle to Bride with a special wish for a friend.  Friday morning, in rhythm with the new Moon and Ceres,  I will light the candle to ask that the earth might feel how my heart overflows with gratitude!

Something about dark and light, shadow and the last rays of sunset mingle here, at this moment of new Moon, new beginning.   Aries is the entry sign to the zodiac procession, the parade of animals which circle the earth.   Friday, as the Moon begins her new cycle with the Sun, and the fiery signs of Aries and Sagittarius set one theme for this moment, there is another element at play in this symphony of light and dark.   The theme is initiation.  Like the man in the Tarot card which represents the Sun and Moon’s degree, we face a challenge from which we cannot turn back.

3-of-wands-rider-waite-tarot_large

The person in this card, has come through two steps in the process of growth and evolution.  Like him, all of us, at this precious moment of Sun/Moon/Earth Fire must make a decision about where we go next.  This card is considered a gate to ‘scrying.’   If you enter deep concentration, and look at the ships on the water, they begin to move on the waves.  Continue to focus on this card, and the man will turn to face you, and may offer help to understand your own initiation.

New Moon in Aries, 2019

There is another aspect to this chart, this moment of new Moon, which has to do with looking at the past.  Saturn is in relationship to the Sun and Moon, and speaks from a place of the past (South Lunar Node) and deep intensity of concentrated power, Pluto.  Don’t be surprised if something or someone from your past reappears.  This combination of Sun/Moon/ Ceres and Saturn may give each of us a way to know that we too are ‘Nature Spirits  at work in the light of sunset.’  Dancing in the woods at twilight may be an act of great power to heal and mend our home.

Virgo and Pisces are the healers of the Zodiac.  Maybe Virgo is the ‘doctor’, the diagnostician, the one who plans the course of healing.  Pisces seems to be the ‘nurse’, the one who provides compassionate care. Pisces is prominent in the charts of nurses, and Virgo with the charts of those who are the  primary healer.  At this full Moon,  they are both at zero degree, the gate, the entry to the signs.   As always they form an axis, which spans  the chart, creating a bridge between the two signs.  Lunar nodes in Virgo and Pisces are very common in healers, both allopathic and alternative.   I chose the painting of the megalith above, because there is an element of healing which can only be found in nature, and when I enter the woods and come face to face with a message as clear as this one, I know that healing will take place.  Dowsers say that megaliths marks underground water patterns, spirals, and turns in the current, places of healing for ancient people, and for us as well.

Chiron is also about to begin a journey into a new sign, Aries.   Chiron is the marker for an indelible wound in our life, a wound which can never be healed, but which provides us with the healing knowledge to help others.   Those born with Chiron in Aries (1968-1977 and 2018-2027)  treat their wounds with impatience.  They tend to shake off the pain they feel, much like warriors,  the sign of Aries.  1968-77 was a turbulent period, with very little adult attendance to the wounds of children born during this  time of  huge transitions.  Children born with this Chiron, had to take care of themselves and perhaps other children around them.  They are like combat medics, who learned they must quickly bind up wounds, and make choices about who can survive.

The Sabian Symbol for this degree of Chiron in Aries, is  mysterious:   A WOMAN JUST RISEN FROM THE SEA. A SEAL IS EMBRACING HER.  Impulse to be. Chiron occupies the degree which begins the journey of the zodiac, the degree of the Spring Equinox. In this powerful location he is entirely focused on the evolution of the planet’s consciousness.  Like the image above, we are part, fish, part beast, part winged creature.  We live in the waters of the unconscious, Pisces, and  struggle to analyze where we are and where we have come from, Virgo.

Virgo is ‘ruled’ by Mercury, Hermes, he who is always moving about in our heads and swiftly travels with the Sun.  At this moment of the full Moon, Mercury is a close companion to Neptune, one of the rulers of Pisces.  Neptune pulls our rational impulse under water.  Here  we dream, experience visions,  and forget Virgo’s concerns.Hermes (Mercury) was the dream master of the ancient world.  Neptune is an entirely different psychopomp.  My dreams have been vivid and memorable over the last few days as this combination of Pisces/Virgo, Mercury/Neptune has moved into position.

Nitien Ring .jpg

photo: Sarah Fuhro

A few days ago I visited the Peabody Museum in Cambridge, and was fascinated with  strange brass  rings from Liberia, called Nitien.   Made by the Kru and Grebo people,  found in creeks, rivers and lagoons,  they are water spirits or ‘Gods of water’.  Nitien have the ability to stop wars, found villages, heal the sick and guarantee fertility. They are also able to catch people crossing streams. The Nitien live in the water but can be caught and brought into the village, where they serve as protector or guardians.  These rings represent this moment of time to me, this full Moon in Virgo.   We are caught up with the illness to our waters and seas.   Perhaps at this full Moon moment we can walk under the beams of the Virgo Moon/Pisces Sun axis to ask for the Nitien energy to heal us, to heal the waters and the seas of Pisces.  Chiron as he stands at the gate of Aries, offers us the potential of new forms of consciousness. On Tuesday, 19th of February,  take a moment to feel the ‘embrace of the seal.’

imbolc candles

Monday’s new Moon  falls on the astrological degree of Imbolc, a festival  of light, which marks the half way point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.  There is  a fiery combination of Uranus and Mars in Aries in this chart, which will wake up the earth for many of us this weekend and culminate at the new Moon on Monday.

Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune are all in their favorite constellations, and have tight relationships with each other and the new Moon.  The players in the sky are working together in a way that can inspire and encourage each of us to move through fear and into new realms of creative expression.  It’s an opportunity, to envision and take the first steps towards exploring new territory, a moment of optimism and courage, just like the green shoots coming from the dark and silent seed.

New Moon in Aquarius 2019

Imbolc celebrates the goddess Bride.  She is the Lady of healers and mid-wives, poets and artists,  and  black smiths and crafts folk.  A triskelion of talents is  available to each of us, if we trust in ourselves and her inspiration.  It’s traditional to light nineteen candles at Imbolc, the number of the Sun,  now returning to Northern lands.  Cleansing is also part of this season when Bride meets us between snow and mud, sunshine and winter storms.

And then there is the trio of well placed planets: Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. Each brings a gift to this new Moon, a triskelion of delicious energy.  Jupiter says: dream big, Saturn suggests work hard to make the dream into a material reality and Neptune takes the dream to the level of vision, something we might share with our community.  Like Bride, they come at this sweet moment of the year to bring gifts to the new Moon in the sign of Aquarius where humanity is ready to evolve.

A theme of fiery intensity heats up this chart, and makes the triskelion into a twirling wheel of fire. It is  the fire of Aries, the chart ‘signature’ and the sign of Uranus and Mars who might be the kick start to our Jupiterian dream.   Or we can experience Uranus and Mars as anger and impatience.  Irritation will only increase the energy of Aries.    Eris, the Lady of discord is also in Aries, cheek and jowl with Mars.   If you feel chaotic instead of motivated and focused  this weekend, take a minute to converse with this energy.  To add to the intensity, Pluto who always knows what lies below the surface, is in a powerful square with the Aries players.   Expect a challenge, or learn how to call upon this vitality.

Yesterday  I watched as Venus and the last sliver of the Moon had a conversation in the dawn sky.  Many days I get up early to go to a yoga class, and when the Moon is almost finished with her journey, she rises with me.  If Venus is in her morning phase, we all three rise together.   I took a picture from my phone to record the beauty of their dawn rendezvous, but all you can see is the intense relationship between these two gems.

The New Moon on Saturday will feature an eclipse of the Sun visible in Asia.   The big excitement for most of us will come at the full Moon, when there is a total lunar eclipse, the Moon huge in perigee, a ‘blood Moon!’  visible to North and South America, Europe, Middle East, most of Africa, and part of Asia.

New Moon in Capricorn

The morning I watched the little Moon and sparkling Venus I received  a clear message about the new Moon: the word was ‘sensuality’.  I could feel that sensuality in the yoga class.  I felt my body become integrated with a larger body, the human body!   All this makes sense with the huge amount of Capricorn stacked up in this chart.   Form, structure, organization, materialization, embodiment, are all characteristics of Capricorn.  The sign is usually associated with government or business, and this new Moon takes place as a new Congress is sworn in, after a complete breakdown of government function.  The ‘body politic’ needs some embodiment!

leaves in ice          photo: Robert Fuhro

Maybe the ice of the winter season after the Solstice is part of that Capricorn structure.  Water stilled in the form of ice is reflected at this new Moon moment in the position and degree of Neptune, King of the Waters, in the Water sign of Pisces.   Does Neptune work to wash away the Capricorn organization?  Or does Capricorn freeze up the watery nature of Neptune in Pisces.  This next week should be interesting!!

This much Capricorn, especially with Saturn, ruler of Capricorn in the crowd of planets can create a sense of stillness,  felt as depression.  Daylight is short.   Yet  there is also a message of quiet possibility.    This is a time  to begin to manifest whatever wishes, dreams, visions  you have held for many years or lifetimes.   Do some magic to focus on the possibility of creation!  Put a message into a bottle and send it out into Neptune’s deep waters, beyond the ice jam!

Saturn is the planet of bones, Capricorn is in charge of the joints of our body,  structure which holds us together.  This new Moon gathering of Capricorn planets includes Sun, Moon, Mercury, Pluto and the South Node, the eclipse point in the chart, what was learned and used but is the tail end of experience, all that which is used up, ready to be left behind!

Sometimes

Sometimes
if you move carefully
through the forest

breathing
like the ones
in the old stories

who could cross
a shimmering bed of dry leaves
without a sound,

you come
to a place
whose only task

is to trouble you
with tiny
but frightening requests

conceived out of nowhere
but in this place
beginning to lead everywhere.

Requests to stop what
you are doing right now,
and

to stop what you
are becoming
while you do it,

questions
that can make
or unmake
a life,

questions
that have patiently
waited for you,

questions
that have no right
to go away.

The full Moon celebrates the Winter Solstice on Saturday, December 22.  Both Luminaries, Sun and Moon are at 0 degree  of Capricorn and Cancer, constellations which mark the entry into winter and summer.   This is a moment when we can hear the Music of the Spheres.  It is a moment of absolute stillness, a chance to begin anew in a place of cosmic attunement!

The approach to the dark winter solstice always feels dangerous and death ridden.  But there is an opportunity for healing at this moment.  The position of Mars and Chiron as they relate to the Sun and Moon speaks of healing, finding a doctor within.    What can be done to lighten the mood?  Mars says: party like crazy, go to concerts, sing and feast!  Chiron recommends embracing all the colors of your crystal, knowing how important is your ray of light in this spectrum.   Leave nothing of yourself behind in the cold.

There’s a strong suggestion of surprise in this chart as Uranus, the Wild One shakes Sun and Moon with fiery energy.  The Sabian Symbol for the position of Uranus is Attunement to cosmic order.  ‘Listen to Your Inner Voice!’ he says from his perch in Aries.    Look into the crystal, a reminder of all the frequencies of colors which must go into a ray of pure white light. To hear the Inner Voice, we have to trust our own light, our own music!

Full Moon in cancer 2018

Venus and Neptune are in a harmonious trine of Water signs.  They play the background music for this Sun Moon dance.  What will the entry of the Moon into Cancer (more Water),  mean for the  planets of love?   Perhaps Venus and Neptune  will tune us to the cosmic order.  Cosmic music, like the light of the crystal, requires each vibration of sound.

A musical theme seems right for a full Moon at the season when we sing or hear music the most.   The Sabian Symbol for Uranus continues with the theme of ‘cosmic attunement.’  ‘If you are ready to enter into new possibilities of action, you must also learn the harmonic principles in operation! The Music of the Spheres.’    All we are asked to do is to stop a moment to feel the Sun’s journey and the full Moon’s sweet voice!

The celebration of the journey of the Sun and Moon, gives depth and comfort to every person, no matter who they are, where they live.  Each voice in praise of the Earth and Sky are more powerful than all the forces of destruction and despair!   The bird of this season is the Wren, smallest of all, with the sweetest note!   The old song says: ‘Who sees the Wren sees God.’  Our song is never too small to move hearts and to brighten the dark season.

The Visionary                                    photo: Sarah Fuhro

This might be the New Moon of ‘the Seer.’   A Seer, a visionary, a psychic describes a scene for us. She must state clearly what she sees, even if it is only a partial view of a situation, a glimpse through a key hole.

If we take a moment for a new Moon ritual over the next few days, we may feel that potential for something new, even unexpected in our body.  The message might appear in our  hips, for that is the part of the body, which is ‘ruled’ by Sagittarius.  But it might speak to us through some other channel completely.  I wonder if we listen to these messages, could we  avoid the louder, more insistent  voice of illness and discomfort in our body.

Visage.jpg BL                                 photo: Bruce Lhuillier

Once more, we are at a moment of new beginning, a black Moon seed ready to be planted in the dark earth, with hopes for a harvest of …..what?   Maybe the rest of the chart for this tender passage into new territory will have give a clue as to what is the potential for sprout and harvest.  An astrology chart can be a theatrical moment, when a group of players (planets)  are aligned to interact in various dramatic ways.   Let’s see if we can make out what happens on the cosmic and earthly stage, and how it is reflected in our personal lives.

new Moon in Saggitarius 2018

The Sun has now traveled the first half of his journey through the constellation of Sagittarius.   Sagittarius is associated with a kind of joyous idealism, an enthusiasm for philosophy and travel and partying.  The energy of this sign is not blocked unless the ideals become a stick to hit other people.   Sagittarius is both very enthusiastic about other cultures,  and religions, or the same energy  can be equally fanatical and intolerant of differences.

Stormy hooded head BL .jpgphoto: Bruce Lhuillier

At the moment of the new Moon, Jupiter,  the king of Sagittarius is in close connection to the Sun and Moon.  The Symbol for the degree where Jupiter is located speaks of unexpected emotions: ‘CUPID KNOCKS AT THE DOOR OF A HUMAN HEART.    KEYNOTE: A stirring-up of individual longings for romantic love. Emotional rebirth.   Sagittarius is an archer with an upraised bow, who shoots at the stars. Cupid is a child of Venus who creates mischief, or ’emotional rebirth,’ with his arrows, which do not respect the rules of society.   Cupid’s arrows break the grip of the mental process, and open the heart.

Saint and wounded figure BL .jpg                                    photo: Bruce Lhuillier

And speaking of action.   We have a very interesting pair in the wings.  They may not be immediately visible to us as we take a moment for a new Moon ritual, but they will be strongly felt.   Mars, the warrior and Neptune the mystic are  in perfect conjunction with a strong (square) relationship to the Sun and Moon.   Mars is full of energy and fury, but in watery Pisces and conjunct the ruler of Pisces, Neptune, he may not be able to focus his passion.   Neptune never can be seen head on.  He is a dream figure, without a clear strategy, yet he can sink our ship or keep us afloat in the sea of our emotions.

Jelly fish moon                                    photo: Bruce Lhuillier

The theme of elements in Fire and Water can make a beautiful melange, a poem, an inspired piece of music or art.  Or it can all escape in steam.  We call upon earthy Saturn in Capricorn to ground it in form.  He promises us: AN ANGEL CARRYING A HARP. The revelation of the spiritual meaning and purpose at the core of any life situation. ATTUNEMENT.  Creativity, is the essence of this Moon moment.

‘A GLASS-BOTTOMED BOAT REVEALS UNDERSEA WONDERS.’

Friday morning, just after midnight (EST), the full Moon reaches her greatest distance from the Sun to illuminate what lies below the surface of our consciousness.    I suppose Moonlight always lights what we can’t see with our daylight vision, but the degree of this full Moon offers the planetary psyche, all of us, ‘a new dimension of reality.’   This full Moon takes place as a celebration of the Sun’s entry into Sagittarius, a constellation of great hope and vision.   Moon enters the opposite sign ofGemini as a way to communicate (the specialty of this sign)  what Sagittarius wants to reveal.

The planet who guides Gemini,  Mercury, the magician, lives at the degree of a special image of deep power and imagination:  IN THE LEFT SECTION OF AN ARCHAIC TEMPLE, A LAMP BURNS IN A CONTAINER SHAPED LIKE A HUMAN BODY.

IMG_8498                                                                  clay figure: Sarah Fuhro

How does the human body bring light to ancient problems?    I depend upon my body’s response to tell me what my eyes cannot see.   More and more I find that my breath changes perception.   And as Mercury is on a retrograde journey,  we must plan to stop for a moment to learn everything over again, the breath, the perception, the Moon lit road.

Think of this full Moon in Gemini as a new beginning in perception. Both Sun and Moon are at 0 degree, they are like a new pair of glasses, a new start more than a culmination. But are they emerald glasses? rose-colored glasses? Illusion or a clear vision?

Full Moon in Gemini 2018

‘A NEW DIMENSION OF REALITY’ is promised by this full Moon in Gemini,   ‘The revelation of unconscious energies and submerged psychic structures’  cannot be seen if we don’t take a moment to look through the lens of the ‘Glass bottom boat.’  What can be seen may be murky at first, or even ominous.

Light through water plays tricks.  Distance becomes illusory.  We reach for something and it is beyond our grasp.  Yet there is something about this underwater world which is intriguing, even necessary to our understanding of the dry land we inhabit.  Maybe we can learn something from Jupiter,  who has just spent the last year in Scorpio, a watery sign of the deep places.  Now he is a few degrees from the Sun in his new sign, Sagittarius.  He is there to support the Sun in the newly entered sign, which Jupiter rules.

This is the lunar month of Ngetal, the Reed, a time of dark days, and early nights.  Reeds grow in swamps, the beginning of new life, the places of death and renewal, Scorpio.  The asteroid Ceres (Demeter) is in Scorpio at this moment.  She is in a trine with Mars in Pisces, release and endings.  Everything in this chart conspires to offer power to the regal pair, Sun and Moon, ‘the luminaries.’

gold swamp                                            photo: Sarah Fuhro

Gold is light from the Sun reflected in a swamp near my house.   Take heart, this is a full Moon to lift our spirits.   Gemini, the chatter box and Sagittarius the visionary, push away the fears, which leap out to deter us.
