All Summer, Jupiter and Saturn have been very bright in the Eastern sky. Both are teachers, but with very different styles. On December 21, they will meet at the moment of the Winter Solstice. Jupiter and Saturn come together every twenty years, and when they do, they are seen as the beginning of a new twenty year cycle.

The Wheel of Fortune/Jupiter The World/ Saturn

The last meeting of Jupiter and Saturn was May, 2000. Soon after, the attack on the World Trade Center shifted American attention and led to ten years of United State combat in the Middle East. On a personal note, it marked the month and year I began my study of Flower Essence Therapy at a professional level and could then incorporate a healing modality with the pattern of plants into my astrology practice. The conjunction took place in Taurus, a sign of powerful Earth energy.

The conjunction this December will be the closest since 1623. This is a date which marks the beginning of European settlement of North America. We are now at a point of environmental crisis, which is worldwide, but has many roots in this date. The values and relationship of indigenous human beings to the Earth was lost during this colonial period. I don’t mean that this all started in 1623, but it was certainly a turning point on this continent.

I mention the long anticipated Jupiter-Saturn meeting because this full Blue Moon is preparing us for the change ahead. The Aries Moon, who rises as the Libra Sun sets carries an interesting message in the Sabian Symbol for the moment of fullness: ‘A TEACHER GIVES NEW SYMBOLIC FORMS TO TRADITIONAL IMAGES. Revision of attitude at the beginning of a new cycle of experience. Dane Rudhyar, An Astrological Mandala.

Part of the ‘revision of attitude’ is carried by the presence of Chiron close to the Moon. Chiron represents the power of healing. In this case the healing may have to do with waiting. There is a great deal of Aries (Fiery) energy at this time. Aries is the warrior, ready to do battle, but a masterful Aries is willing to wait until the perfect moment to strike. This full Moon has the potential to turn anger into well focused life force. The Libra energy of the Sun, and Chiron’s healing power may be able to channel the Aries impulsive fire of the Moon and Mars to relief and stability.

The fiery Aries energy of Moon, Mars, Chiron is linked to the earthy manifesting Capricorn energy of Saturn, Pluto, Jupiter and Pallas Athena. I wonder if Uranus in Taurus, close to the fiery Aries planets is expressed in the fires of the West Coast. They are the unheard voice of the Earth out of balance, suffering from drought and exploitation, but still capable of fighting back, even while ignored. For the warrior in each of us, may this full Moon bring patience and focus. Since there are two full Moons in the month of October, we have twice the fun….thank you, Blue Moon!

A closer look at Aries. This is the continuation of the series of illustrations by Amelia Leonards for an Astrology Oracle Deck we hope to finish next year.

painting: Amelia Leonards

Aries is the energy of the Spring Fire we can feel in our feet in March and April if we live in the Northern Hemisphere.  When it shows up in Autumn at the time the Harvest Moon…the biggest, most energized Moon of the year, we cannot ignore it.  This Moon is large and intrusive, yet because of the Libra energy pouring in from the Sun’s position, this is not about impulse, but more about gathering and refinement.   Mars rules Aries, and Mars is presently in the sign of Aries, moving in reverse, retrograde.  A time to rethink and reimagine.

Aries is Cardinal and Fiery in every possible way.   The Spring equinox takes place at 0º Aries and marks the beginning of the astrological year.  The head is where Aries is especially powerful, that includes teeth and eyes.   People with a lot of Aries energy tend to go ‘head first’ into whatever they do. Aries is the ram, the male sheep who uses his head to battle his way to leadership of the flock.

The Life Force of Aries is developed and refined by his opposite, Libra, ruled by Venus at the time of the full Moon in Aries.    With each choice we make in life we channel our life force towards construction and destruction.  Embrace the Aries in your chart, notice if there are planets in that sign, and which house carries that energy of Fire and of new beginnings.

A Full Moon, a Blue Moon on July 31!

This little light of mine

I’m going to let it shine

Oh, this little light of mine

I’m going to let it shine…

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

With Sun in Leo, the power of self-expression is at its height! With Moon in Aquarius art and expression are a community activity. Leo loves to show the soul’s purpose through joyous expession. Aquarian energy shows us our kinship with all of humanity and with plants and animals as well.   This is not on a mystical basis, but rather on a scientific platform.

Two famous Aquarians Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the same date (February 12, 1809), . In quite different ways these astrological ‘twins’ changed the outlook of Western culture to embrace a more holistic view of who we are.

Abraham Lincolnhttp://www.historyplace.com/lincoln/jpg

Lincoln led a nation at war  over slavery. Those who believed that humanity is one race, won the war, transformed the economy, and the political structure. The rejection of slavery and the embrace that ‘ALL men are created equal’ has continued to be elaborated with evidence of our common humanity through scientific (Aquarian) evidence of DNA.

Cjharles Darwin

Darwin in his exploration of evolution turned the Western mindset from a Biblical story of man’s special place in God’s universe, to a common understanding of humanity’s place as a part of an ever changing creation. Again scientific evidence from Darwin and other naturalists, and studies of DNA taught us we share most of our genetic material with grasshoppers and bananas.   The conclusion that everything alive on the planet is made from the same basic material, and developed from single cells of living material is an Aquarian world view.

Yet Aquarius is also the sign of technology and the development of machines, which are destroying the natural world. There seems to be a strange contest between an expanding consciousness of our interconnected fate, and a thoughtless race to destroy the very fabric into which we are woven.

July 31st is the eve of Lughnasadh, the first harvest festival of the Druid year. It is the time to give thanks for harvest of the Northern Hemisphere, and to acknowledge the sacrifice that plants and animals make to our well being. It is also the time to remember the changes that took place as ancestors went from hunter gatherer, nomads to settled farmers with secure food sources. It is a day of bread and of fire, games, and weddings.

This is when the chorus of insects is heard on summer evenings.  Their voices life in praise of summer nights and the mother who feeds us.

How to speak of it:

the bramble path to the heart,

the wind as it rolls flat

all that grew in the sweet fields of May.

The season of bread and sorrow

fast approaches. Lughnasadh

casts a shadow in the hot and golden

fields of summer, where cicadas thrum.

Unspeakable how, the Moon, as she rises

catches the light of the run away Sun,

who lies hidden beneath the earth.

This is the second full Moon of the month, and so is called a ‘Blue Moon.’ Some say this is because the Maine Farmer’s Almanac circled the second full Moon of the month in blue. There is no astrological significance in a Blue Moon, it is the endless task of fitting a 13 Moon lunar cycle into a 12 month Solar cycle. Every nineteen years there is a blue Moon in the same month, on or close to the same date. Nineteen is the Sun’s number in relationship to the Moon.

And why not celebrate this abundance of two full Moons, this time of ripening harvest, and pulsing heat. This is Leo, with Sun as ruler dancing across from bright Luna! This is the full Moon when Samhain herbs are gathered to bring light into a dark season.

July 31 Full MoonSaturn will turn direct on August 1st.  Time to get back to work, but only after cleaning out (Scorpio) treasures of deep exploration in the closet of old truths.   Saturn rules boundaries, fences, edges. Jupiter in Leo will square this Saturn on August 3rd. The Saturnic desire for limits must be woven with Jupiter in Leo’s limitless enthusiasm.   Jupiter enters Virgo on August 11 where will he and we put our energies in this earth element sign?

As the Moon in Aquarius fills, and rises at sunset opposite Leo Sun, we might look at the symbolism of Cecil the lion, and the Aquarian Internet fury his death has aroused. Each full Moon offers us the opportunity to integrate oppositional forces within us and around us.   Cecil grass

One of the symbols of Aquarius is the human being.  Aquarius does not value the privilege money can buy. The voice of thousands of people who are hurt and outraged by Cecil’s death, spoken via electronic means is a perfect expression of this sign.Leo honors the monarch and the expression of powerful gifts shared in the community.

Each of us has both Aquarius and Leo in our charts. Dance to the music of their full Moon!
