Apollo is the god of light, but he is not the Sun.  His light is the enemy of darkness, and his names, Phoebus and Lyctus mean the ‘bright’ and the ‘life giving’. As we light candles and bonfires for the Solstice and New Year, we are calling him to brighten the dark.

The seventh day of very month (lunar cycle) was his birthday. The first day of every lunar cycle was sacred to him. He, in the form of the Sun is always with the Moon on this first day of a new month.

We have just passed through the darkest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, let us sing to him as Sun and Moon embrace in Capricorn, on Thursday morning!
candlesAt Chanukah there is the potential to connect to our inner light.  Darkness gives us that opportunity to know our own brightness.

Capricorn is a constellation with strong connection to organization and tradition, to a steadfast, but slow ascent to a goal. Maybe this is the reason we have the tradition of making resolutions  for the New Year.   The planetary ruler of Capricorn is Saturn. He likes patience, and dedication. Or as the Sabian Symbol suggests for the degree of the New Moon this week: ‘IN A SUN-LIT HOME DOMESTICATED BIRDS SING JOYOUSLY.

KEYNOTE: The wholesome happiness which subservience to the ideals and patterns of a well-established culture brings to those who accept them unreservedly’.
new-moon-in-capricorn-2016Is your interior a place of sun lit domesticity? Is Apollo your god, or do you acknowledge another deity? Uranus and Jupiter, are in opposition. Life is blessed by Jupiter, but jolted out of peaceful order by Uranus. When these two interact, as they do at this new Moon, you can expect: sudden and surprising news. Jupiter’s famous thunderbolts combine with the  electric excitement of Uranus.  It’s a great combination for a new Moon at a NewYear.   You know you must take an entirely different course in life, to dare and dream in new ways, perhaps secure in the good foundation you have built over the past year.

mainstone-blue-iceBut for these few days around the New Moon, it’s difficult to materialize the Jupiter Uranus drive because Mars, who is energy and vitality is about to mix with Neptune, the dreamer, the illusion maker, the oceanic blend. Mars and Neptune are in the same degree with Moon and Sun. The new Moon is always a great time to begin a new project, but plans sparked by Jupiter and Uranus will have to meditate, or marinate for a few days. The angry energy of Mars may  soften into a spiritual force, instead of an explosive fury.  Listen to your dreams (Neptune) as they speak through Mercury.

There is a healing theme to this new Moon.  Chiron the healer is in Pisces and
connects  to the Jupiter/ Uranus opposition. Healing always seems to involve accepting the whole of a difficult situation. Chiron has a  relationship to Saturn, who makes for a strong organization, and to Venus as she brightens the evening sky.  Her energy of love and beauty could inspire unique artistic expression and a sense of love without boundary. The whole of this crown is made from many separate strands  woven together to form a strong circle. Like the astrology chart of any moment in time, like a strong and loving community, all the planets, must be acknowledged.

Strange Gods, New Medicine   Tuesday, 13 December 2016

fulll-moon-in-gemini-2016It’s a full Moon; Sun and Moon are on opposites sides of the chart, and as the Sun sets, the Moon rises.   The Sun is in the fiery sign of Sagittarius. There is a strange mixture of kindness, curiosity and joyful optimism that sometimes flips and becomes fanaticism, and intolerance in Sagittarius. Perhaps this is because Jupiter, king of all the gods rules this sign, and like many monarchs, he is jolly until he is crossed.

Meanwhile the Moon is in airy Gemini, lots of talk and the ever spinning brain. Gemini Moon can think her way out of emotional turmoil, but also needs to communicate feelings in order for them to be real. Mercury rules this sign and the ‘jazziness’ of energy which he creates is often poured into multi tasking, non stop talking, and feverish excitement until exhaustion sets in. Yet there is a deep resilience and renewal to this Moon sign!

Mercury and Jupiter are very different gods…Jupiter is the king, Mercury his servant hermes-and-zeusmessenger, but like many servants, he has a kind of freedom forbidden to monarchs. Jupiter is known for his stormy marriage to Juno and endless sexual conquests of mortals and gods. Mercury is more androgynous. He is also promiscuous, and some say he has a daughter with Venus, but no marriage for him!   Notice his floppy hat!

With each full Moon we have the opportunity to integrate opposite signs, and to bridge our understanding of polarity.   We all contain these contradictions and instead of trying to repress one side or another, the full Moon says: embrace it all, and create a dance of the whole mess!

odin-in-hatThere is another opposition in this chart as well. This is one I would call the Odin pattern. Uranus and his companions Eris (chaos) and Ceres look across the chart to Jupiter.   Like the Sun and Moon they are in signs of Fire and Air. Odin, like Uranus is not about established tribal order, but more about the new ways. He is known as the ‘Wanderer.’ He wears a floppy hat, like Mercury and is missing one eye, which he surrendered in order to acquire deep wisdom. Like all interesting gods, he is full of contradiction.   His name can be translated as ‘Master of Ecstasy.’ He is concerned with war, wisdom, magic, shamanism, poetry and the dead.   His gift is the Runes, a magical alphabet. . His connection to Uranus in Aries makes him much like Prometheus, who brought fire to humanity. Jupiter is in Libra at this time. Uranus and the gang are in Aries, another god of war. Jupiter in Libra suggests a deep concern with law and order. But Uranus suggests upheaval and anger. The Shamanic process of Death, Purification and Renewal are Odin’s qualities and indicated in this full Moon chart.

The theme of Odin continues. Mercury and Pluto square this Uranus/Jupiter opposition, further emphasis on the Death (Pluto) and poetry (Mercury) aspect of Odin’s character. Here he is at Standing Rock, walking the battlefield as he was known to do.

That battle is far from over, and most of us expect further conflicts between the people’s forces of Uranus/Eris/Ceres and the power of big business (Jupiter). Pluto is associated with oil, and he and Mercury are in the sign of Capricorn, government and corporations. The T-square in this chart opens out to the sign of Cancer, the sign of home, the wisdom of the Moon, the emotional tides.   Here we may find the healing we need, the wisdom Odin found when he hung from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, where the Runes are carved.   He pierced himself with his spear, and gazed into the Well of Urd, from which Yggdrasil grows and he learned the secret of the Runes. He says:  “given to Odin, myself to myself.”  This might be the medicine we need at this time, the ability to give away ego, in order to learn a new medicine for the World.

odin-cavalier-1Here is Odin on his eight legged horse, Sleipnir. He carries his sword, Gugnir and is accompanied by his ravens: Huginn and Muninn. He had the power to bind and unbind the human mind, symbolized in the interlocking triangles called Valknut. Like the astrology chart, this is the eternal movement of the Universe.

The New Moon of Duir (Oak)

 Black Face

Eat out of my hand, little wild soul,

crazy squirrel, black face singer.

The singer who is my sister is dark, dark.

The hand I extend to the wild animal

is white, white.

I hear the sound of the tinkling bell.

It cracks the silence.

I am like the baby chick

who knows when to break

the perfect architecture of my isolation.

And I peck my way out,

but not until I am strong enough

to break through can I break through.

The acorn is also an egg.

the chick inside is the king

of the forest.

The oak climbs to the heights

that equal the journey of the sun.

I am looking for the acorns

that feed the wild pigs

in the forest,

and I am black of face,

and white of hand.

and my bell calls my animals.

 I make a fire

and from the charcoal

of the burnt bones of the oak

that hatched from my acorn,

I blacken my face once again .

Each Moon cycle begins in darkness, just as we are initiated and nurtured in the dark womb. In the Northern Hemisphere plants are just now pushing their way out of the dark earth, while in the Southern Hemisphere, the season is turning towards the season of greatest darkness.

This Moon in Gemini is the Oak Moon, which contains the moment of the Sun’s greatest power and height, culminating in the Summer Solstice, the Sun’s moment of standstill before turning southward. The Duir Moon is a season of high culmination in the Druid calendar, for the Druid is the person with ‘Oak knowledge.’ In the description of Pliny (first century CE), the Druids performed their rituals in oak groves, and gathered mistletoe, sacred to the Sun from the Oak tree.

The oak is sacred in many cultures because of its ability to attract lightening, the direct communication of the gods. Most of the ‘top gods’ were lightening gods, Jupiter, Zeus, Thor, Shaddai in Hebrew, Tlaloc for the Aztecs. The oak’s huge size, strength and longevity represent the world, a home for many species, providing food, shelter, heat and shade to those who live in and around the king of the trees. Oak is often called the World Tree.

We are in the Moon cycle of the greatest power of the Sun here in the Northern part of the world. At the conjunction of the Sun and Moon (new Moon) the power is shared, and if we are open to the cosmos, we can feel that powerful moment in ourselves. Male and female, darkness and light blend as the two luminaries meet to leave our world, temporarily Moonless. When the Moon emerges to set at twilight a day or two later, she is robed in beauty.

The new Moon will be feeling an exact square from Neptune in Pisces; some of the cheery rationalism of Gemini may be awash in that watery planet’s dreams and illusory powers. Perhaps this moment of the new Moon would be a good time to stop, and if possible, to meditate and feel the chatter of the airy Gemini Sun and Moon, slow down into a chant.

Mars is also directly connected to the luminaries in a trine of air. There may be some action, conceived at this moment to be put into form as the Moon fills into her Sagittarian robes.   The Sabian Symbol for the degree of Sun and Moon is pertinent to this chart’s symbols of vision or dream (Neptune) and Mar’s urgency towards action.  ‘Aroused strikers surround a factory.’   Revolt against privileges.

Over 100 McDonald’s Workers Arrested Protesting Outside Shareholder Meeting’ seems to be an illustration of this degree symbol.

The tension of the still ongoing Uranus Pluto square is enlarged through, a third square from Jupiter, and a fourth arm with Vesta and Ceres-two voices who speak for the earth and the ancient rites and rights of women.   This will be an interesting combination for those who are stretched to their limit on low wages. Jupiter in Cancer is about food and the people. Pluto in opposition might be a stand in for the plutocrats who run corporations. Jupiter and Pluto are brothers but brothers often in conflict.   Uranus in Aries, is the angry revolutionary in this combination, his opposition to the asteroids in Libra suggest those ancient forces so long forgotten may be rising to the surface.

Watch the water trine of Saturn, Jupiter and Chiron. This may be an indicator of change in shape of the water element. Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist itLao Tzu.

Imagine! The New Moon in Aries 2014

 Imagine there is no heaven

It’s easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries

It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion, too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you will join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world

You, you may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you will join us

And the world will live as one

John Lennon

In a yoga class this week, I listened to  Imagine.  The voice of John Lennon felt powerfully alive, and I knew the song must be a key to the present moment.  When I returned home, I looked at the chart for the new Moon in Aries, which will take place Sunday, March 30,  It feels as if this is a chance  to reconsider the song, or perhaps to hear it again in the light of this moment!   http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/johnlennon/imagine.html. The Sabian Symbol for the Sun and Moon reads:   ‘A Teacher Gives New Symbolic Forms To Traditional Images.  Revision of attitude at the beginning of a new cycle of experience. ‘   Once again we have the opportunity to start anew!  Each new Moon is a fresh start, and Aries is the beginning of the astrological cycle—a double opportunity!  A new cycle begins with an inner change of ‘attitude.’

This new moment features the Sun and Moon in close company with Uranus, the electric communicator, change factor, and revolutionary.  He is often compared to Prometheus who brought fire from the heavens to human beings on earth, a new technology.  In astrology Uranus is considered a higher manifestation of Mercury, and is a planet associated with astrology and computers.

Uranus showed up in Herschel’s telescope just as European culture was experimenting with a whole new concept, the Rights of Man.  There was a revolution in colonial America with a new Constitution, even while it juggled slavery.  France was in the throes of insurrection, which overthrew a divine king, soon to be replaced by a military master.  But the old ways were crumbling.  It was a ‘change of attitude,’ if not of substance.  What would have been our role in those tumultuous times, and what is our place under the Sun, Moon and Uranus in the present moment?

New Moon in Aries 2014

Juno, the asteroid of marriage, is cheek and jowl with Uranus, Moon and Sun. This revolution plays out in the most basic unit of human society,  the family.   ‘Four in 10 American households with children under age 18 now include a mother who is either the sole or primary earner for her family, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of Census and polling data released Wednesday. This share, the highest on record, has quadrupled since 1960.’http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/30/business/economy/women-as-family-breadwinner-on-the-rise-study-says.html?_r=0.   Marriage between same sex couples is part of the revolution, and is legalized all over the world, often with much less controversy than in the United States.  But all this has deep implications for attitudes towards what is possible, for men and women and for the future of what constitutes a marriage.

Jupiter and Pluto are in square to the stellium in Aries.   They lie opposite one another.  Jupiter is in the Moon’s sign of Cancer, which touches upon family, children, and nurturance.  Pluto continues his journey through Capricorn, which began in 2008 with the world wide financial earthquake.  The family is also represented by Capricorn, but more as an institution and unit of society. The financial inequality between those at the very top and the rest of the population in America has a huge impact upon the family unit.  More families are suffering from homelessness after the real estate melt down. Unemployment and underemployment means hungry people, and families under tremendous stress to provide basic sustenance.   The two forces of Jupiter and Pluto make a square to our chart’s Sun and Moon, Uranus and Juno.   The only direction out for this square is towards Libra, a sign of justice, harmony and balance.

And that brings us back to John Lennon whose birthday, October 9th, features Mars, North Node, Pallas Athena and the Sun all in Libra, the very sign, which would provide stability to this moment in time.   As always, we have choices to make as we live these energies in the best way we know how!
