A Full Moon, a Blue Moon on July 31!

This little light of mine

I’m going to let it shine

Oh, this little light of mine

I’m going to let it shine…

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

With Sun in Leo, the power of self-expression is at its height! With Moon in Aquarius art and expression are a community activity. Leo loves to show the soul’s purpose through joyous expession. Aquarian energy shows us our kinship with all of humanity and with plants and animals as well.   This is not on a mystical basis, but rather on a scientific platform.

Two famous Aquarians Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the same date (February 12, 1809), . In quite different ways these astrological ‘twins’ changed the outlook of Western culture to embrace a more holistic view of who we are.

Abraham Lincolnhttp://www.historyplace.com/lincoln/jpg

Lincoln led a nation at war  over slavery. Those who believed that humanity is one race, won the war, transformed the economy, and the political structure. The rejection of slavery and the embrace that ‘ALL men are created equal’ has continued to be elaborated with evidence of our common humanity through scientific (Aquarian) evidence of DNA.

Cjharles Darwin

Darwin in his exploration of evolution turned the Western mindset from a Biblical story of man’s special place in God’s universe, to a common understanding of humanity’s place as a part of an ever changing creation. Again scientific evidence from Darwin and other naturalists, and studies of DNA taught us we share most of our genetic material with grasshoppers and bananas.   The conclusion that everything alive on the planet is made from the same basic material, and developed from single cells of living material is an Aquarian world view.

Yet Aquarius is also the sign of technology and the development of machines, which are destroying the natural world. There seems to be a strange contest between an expanding consciousness of our interconnected fate, and a thoughtless race to destroy the very fabric into which we are woven.

July 31st is the eve of Lughnasadh, the first harvest festival of the Druid year. It is the time to give thanks for harvest of the Northern Hemisphere, and to acknowledge the sacrifice that plants and animals make to our well being. It is also the time to remember the changes that took place as ancestors went from hunter gatherer, nomads to settled farmers with secure food sources. It is a day of bread and of fire, games, and weddings.

This is when the chorus of insects is heard on summer evenings.  Their voices life in praise of summer nights and the mother who feeds us.

How to speak of it:

the bramble path to the heart,

the wind as it rolls flat

all that grew in the sweet fields of May.

The season of bread and sorrow

fast approaches. Lughnasadh

casts a shadow in the hot and golden

fields of summer, where cicadas thrum.

Unspeakable how, the Moon, as she rises

catches the light of the run away Sun,

who lies hidden beneath the earth.

This is the second full Moon of the month, and so is called a ‘Blue Moon.’ Some say this is because the Maine Farmer’s Almanac circled the second full Moon of the month in blue. There is no astrological significance in a Blue Moon, it is the endless task of fitting a 13 Moon lunar cycle into a 12 month Solar cycle. Every nineteen years there is a blue Moon in the same month, on or close to the same date. Nineteen is the Sun’s number in relationship to the Moon.

And why not celebrate this abundance of two full Moons, this time of ripening harvest, and pulsing heat. This is Leo, with Sun as ruler dancing across from bright Luna! This is the full Moon when Samhain herbs are gathered to bring light into a dark season.

July 31 Full MoonSaturn will turn direct on August 1st.  Time to get back to work, but only after cleaning out (Scorpio) treasures of deep exploration in the closet of old truths.   Saturn rules boundaries, fences, edges. Jupiter in Leo will square this Saturn on August 3rd. The Saturnic desire for limits must be woven with Jupiter in Leo’s limitless enthusiasm.   Jupiter enters Virgo on August 11 where will he and we put our energies in this earth element sign?

As the Moon in Aquarius fills, and rises at sunset opposite Leo Sun, we might look at the symbolism of Cecil the lion, and the Aquarian Internet fury his death has aroused. Each full Moon offers us the opportunity to integrate oppositional forces within us and around us.   Cecil grass

One of the symbols of Aquarius is the human being.  Aquarius does not value the privilege money can buy. The voice of thousands of people who are hurt and outraged by Cecil’s death, spoken via electronic means is a perfect expression of this sign.Leo honors the monarch and the expression of powerful gifts shared in the community.

Each of us has both Aquarius and Leo in our charts. Dance to the music of their full Moon!

Aho, Mitakuye Oyasin, ‘all my relations,’    –Lakota prayerMitakuyeOyasinhttp://3.bp.blogspot.com /MitakuyeOyasin.jpg

Wednesday, July 15, the new Moon in Cancer will focus our attention on the home and the family. What needs to be adjusted in the home and with those we call ‘family,’ might be a clue to our responsibility to our larger home, the Earth and all who share presence here, ‘all our relations’.   In Druidry we share this concept of ‘equality.’ The mineral, the plant, the animal kingdoms, the elements, the directions, the winds, the invisible world and the world we see are woven into a fabric of exquisite beauty where there is no hierarchy of creation. What we will each do for our Mother at this poignant time of the new Moon? We cannot see her at the beginning of her cycle, yet Moon in Cancer will be felt at a deep core in each of us. Cancer reminds us we must start with our emotions. How does it feel in our heart and our stomach.   And only from there can we find the right words and actions to make our home and family truly secure.

blue planet

Wednesday, Mars and Mercury share the same degree in the sign of Cancer, sacred to the seas, which surround our blue planet. The sea calls us in one way or the other. We emerged from the ocean and carry it in our body’s liquid chemistry. Our tears, and our blood speak of our source. Our moods, like the ever changing Moon, ruler of the sign of Cancer, come and go like the tides, and the lunar cycle. Mars in Cancer is the mother as protector, and activist for her children. Mercury in Cancer speaks emotional truth combined with the warrior’s courage of his close contact with Mars. Or we could interpret this to mean: ‘Speak truth to power.’

The Sabian Symbol for the degree (14° Cancer) where Mars and Mercury meet, reminds us we are at a moment of growing awareness that even the ocean has her limits, and the necessity to grow beyond greed to develop a more concious emotional intelligence: ‘In a sumptuous dining hall guests relax after partaking of a huge banquet, The need that exists at an early stage of human growth to materialize the concept of fulfillment.’ There is a need to act decisively with this combination.

Across from Mars and Mercury we see an exact ‘opposition’ from Pluto at 14° Capricorn.pluto-farside-best-7-11-2015-e1436723277310

Pluto in opposition to Mars and Mercury would suggest a powerful urge to get to the core of the experience. There is no hiding place from Pluto’s gaze. As much as we fear him, we gain tremendous power from his contact. July 11 New Hoizons spacecraft flew on the far side Pluto and sent back this picture.   Pluto was discovered at the time atomic energy was developed. The life and death issues which that has presented to earth are reflected in his astrological impact. The Pluto opposition has to be integrated into Mercury and Mars i.e. thought and action.

The Chariot card from the Tarot is a good image for the Mars and Mercury in Cancer.  The card corresponds to cancer, and the young and active prince in his chariot driven by the wisdom of the ages (the Sphinxes) his means of movement.  chariotThe Venus Jupiter conjunction in Leo continues as a lovely sight to behold in the sky. On July 25 Venus will turn retrograde at 1° Virgo. She will turn direct on September 6. During this time she gives us the opportunity to reconsider what we value, how we deal with money and our role in relationships. The beautiful vision of the two ‘benefics’ is a message about joy and love, generosity and beauty. Saturn makes a square to the two. Don’t let him spoil the pleasure of their presence, instead make something (Saturn), a beautiful, a piece of art, an act of sincere friendship, a reflection from the garden of our souls to the summer sky.

Holly New Moon 2015

Chiron in Pisces, Saturn in Scorpio and Sun/Moon form a water trine. This is a celebration of the water element, a spinning rhapsody to the power of love, forgiveness and emotional freedom. We are just coming into our own on a group leve with these. Healing (Chiron), manifestation (Saturn) and new beginnings (Sun and Moon in Cancer) give us the energy we need to transform suffering into creativity.
