An Electrical Storm‘ is the Sabian Symbol for the degree of the full Moon in Taurus.  And, to make sure we  feel this electrical energy, the planet Uranus,  full of the shock value of lightning, sits within one degree of the Moon.   Yet, here’s the strange part: the Sabian Symbol for Uranus is:  ‘A Clear Mountain Stream.’   It seems as if the Moon and Uranus have swapped roles! Our mother the Moon wants to shake us up, the change maker, Uranus wants us to remember our source!

stream runs through it copy                                             photo: Bruce Lhuillier

The Moon loves to be in the sign of Taurus.  Taurus is an Earth sign, where the Moon showers her love  upon this planet which she watches over.  Perhaps she remembers when the Earth was in the sign of Taurus, about 5000 years ago, a time of deep reverence for the feminine, reflected in the art of the time, and stored somewhere in our modern consciousness.

The two Sabian Symbols tell us an interesting story.  ‘A Clear Mountain Stream‘ is about  ‘our pure, uncontaminated source.’  When we can feel that source in ourself, we rejoice in our deepest, most spontaneous and unnamed and untamed nature.  Potential to accomplish whatever our ‘work’ may be is available.   This is the gift of Uranus to this full Moon.  And the full Moon reflects the electrical energy held in Uranus, ‘An Electrical Storm’!   Our deepest and purest  manifestation is electrified by this moment on Wednesday.  Here’s a way to connect and electrify our true nature, as a species and as individuals.

And the degree of the Sun, adds a nostalgic note to this full Moon.  His Sabian Symbol: ‘A Delicate Bottle of Perfume Lies Broken, Releasing its Fragrance.’  This romantic touch may be from the proximity of Venus to the Sun.   The two of them make a strange balance to the Moon/Uranus combination of electrified soul source!  Sense of smell and taste, music, touch, all have a way of recalling a memory from the past, and stirring deep feelings of pain or nostalgia.  Like the broken bottle, we open and release poignant feelings only when we are least expecting them.  At death or at extreme moments of joy and pain, our soul, like the fragrance from the broken perfume bottle is released from its ‘delicate bottle.’

And that companion to the Sun, Venus, in the sign of Scorpio, presents a very contrary image to the delicate symbol of a broken perfume bottle, releasing  fragrance.   Instead Venus is symbolized as: ‘A Massive Rocky Shore Resists the Pounding of the Sea‘. There is a theme of surrender and resistance to change in these two symbols.  It feel as if we are challenged by the Moon and Uranus to feel and embrace the energy of electrical change of this time, and yet we struggle with the pain and resistance we feel to change.

To deepen the powerful thrust of this time Sun and Moon are locked in a perfect square to the Lunar Nodes, which hold the key to where we have been and where we need to travel.   The North Node in Leo, urges us on to self expression, courage, and battle with the ego.  Aquarius reminds us we are part of a community, and have a responsibility to create a livable future.

full Moon in Taurus 2018

Last night I watched a film about the destruction of the land for two indigenous people, in Papua New Guinea and northern Canada.  I came away deeply depressed by the enormous forces of destruction which support my comfortable life style, fills my gas tank and powers my cell phone.    What is my power to resist the destruction of the natural world, while embracing the change, which is: ‘the cosmic power able to transform all the implications of natural existence.’   This seems to be the conundrum, and the message of the full Moon in Taurus, which takes place Wednesday, October 24, at 12:45 EDT

The Sabian Symbols are verbal images for each degree of the zodiac.  They were created by a psychic, Laura Wheeler and an astrologer and philosopher, Marc Edmund Jones.  The astrologer and composer, Dane Rudhyar edited and polished them in his book: The Astrology of Personality.  They give me visual clues to the mysteries held in astrological charts.

The New Moon in Virgo, which we  celebrate this Sunday has an intriguing Sabian Symbol: A Ouija Board!  A Ouija Board is symbol of intuitive communication, a way to connect to spirit guides.  It’s time to travel,  perhaps to travel alone, inward.  Virgo has a solitary thread which is often hard to discern in our sociable nature.  After all, the ‘ruler’ of Virgo is Mercury, lord of communication.  But a Virgo must listen to inner guides, and must do this alone on an inward spiral.

This new Moon which takes place in Virgo marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hoshannah.  By tradition, a spiral  bread is eaten on this holiday.

A spiral is the way of the underground water pathways.  Surely, if the earth has underground water patterns, we must as well.  And the solitary journey inward  will be very significant for this new Moon, because Sun and Moon are exactly opposite  watery Neptune in Pisces. At the last full  Moon, August 26 we celebrated the Virgo Pisces axis,  a representation of the healer and healing. https://sarahfuhro.wordpress.com/2018/08/24/medicine-of-water-and-snakes/.

The Sabian Symbol for this degree continues the theme of healing through solitary travel inward.  Neptune’s degree is symbolized by: In the quiet of his study, a creative individual experiences a flow of inspiration.’  The individual aspect of the creative process is emphasized as is the individual’s need for concentration and at least inner quiet. He must have faith in his own SUBJECTIVE STRENGTH.’

The healing theme continues with the Virgo Sun and Moon in concert with Neptune in Pisces.  Music (Pisces)  might be an important theme as you find a quiet moment to celebrate this tender beginning.

New Moon in Virgo 2018

But why call this Moon chat, Pilgrim’s Progress?  All new Moons suggest a fresh start, a release of old stories and anxiety, a transformation of identity.  This Moon seems to suggest sacred travel.   Maybe, because the Virgo Pilgrim has to settle her affairs before she sets out?  A Pilgrim has to travel light, to be resourceful, to accept the ups and downs of travel, the need to acknowledge that he is vulnerable.  Looking at the chart, over and over again, I came upon a possible impetus for the pilgrimage, theme.  Uranus is opposite Venus.   A deep and mysterious love (Venus in Scorpio) is shaken by a Uranic thunderstorm.   The pilgrimage site is underground (Uranus in Taurus).  Here is a place of absolute renewal, a death and rebirth, which cannot be experienced except through a dynamic and electric experience with the earth!

‘A veiled prophet speaks, seized by the power of a god.’

Ghostly figure BL

This is the Sabian Symbol for the degree of the Capricorn full Moon. Who is the ‘veiled prophet,’ and which god is speaking?   Perhaps the god is Saturn, one degree away from the Moon. Saturn’s degree image: ‘ten logs lie under an archway leading to darker woods.’

He invites us into the darkness of the woods at midnight when the Moon will be exactly full (Wednesday in the Eastern zone of the United States). We need that darkness in order to fully experience the light of the Moon!

Saturn is very comfortable in Capricorn. The Moon in Capricorn does not feel at home, because the sign, which she rules is Cancer, on the opposite side of the chart.   She is out of her ‘element, ‘ alone with Saturn, and to further the discomfort, she is partially eclipsed. The chart has many dramatic possibilities.

Full Moon in Capricorn 2018

The degree of the Sun has this beautiful image:   ‘Two nature spirits dancing under the moonlight’! And Saturn’s degree: ‘Ten logs lie under an archway leading to dark woods,’says we must go deeper to find the magical circle where the spirit dance takes place.

Capricorn, where the Moon is in her full form this month is an Earth sign.   The Earth element is about manifestation, what we experience with the five senses. The symbol for the Earth element is a pentacle, held in the star at the heart of an apple, the pattern of the cycle of Venus. The pentacle is also a reminder that that there are four elements and spirit. And the pentacle is a reminder of our human form. We are made of the five elements and five senses.

Most occult traditions insist on our participation in the earth dance.   To be a magician is to be involved in the everyday work of this planet. Before we can step deeper into the forest under the full Moon at midnight, we must attend to the Capricorn business of earning a living in some form. We have to wash the dishes, and live with our family and community in a responsible way. We are under the rules of Saturn on this planet, but he keeps his promise: Manifestation of your desire awaits the completion of the task you have undertaken.

Chiron is also in the mix of this chart. He will heal our wounds, if we accept our contradictions. We are strong and vulnerable, angry and loving, responsible and ready to run from what we know is required of us.   Chiron in Aries is the wounded warrior. He might be our impulse to seek excitement rather than the focused attention on our task we have pledged through Saturn.

And I cannot ignore the role of Uranus, the revolutionary, the unexpected, the disrupter and transformer.   He is at a degree in Taurus, which connects him to the Moon and Saturn. They are all in earth signs, but he is the god who strikes from the sky. His Sabian Symbol is ‘an electrical storm.’

A full Moon with everything…a message from a god through a veiled prophet, nature spirits to be found if we go deeper into the dark woods and just as we are ready to grasp this promise of manifestation, an electrical storm!

This full Moon and this astrology chart belong to the whole world.   The pain inflicted on refugees fleeing terror only to have their children snatched away and lost, is not an isolated event. Each of us has a veiled prophet within who speaks truth to us, so that we can go deeper into darkness and find the route to actions, which will manifest in justice and kindness.

With this new Moon in Pisces we experience the end (Pisces) and the beginning (Aries). The door closes on one cycle, opens to another.   Water and fire are everywhere. Like all astrology charts, this new Moon pattern lays out a cosmic message, a sentence made of planets, and the space between them, which can sooth us or spur us on.

Save as new Moon in Pisces 2018

We live on a planet of dark and light, night and day. As magicians we are taught to embrace polarity and then release it. Each sign of the Zodiac lies next to one of deep contrast.   This way we are constantly shown one side of things, and then the other. To be able to dance with both feet to this drumbeat is a reason to study astrology!   And the best teacher of astrology, of cycles and polarity is the Moon.

Born with the Moon in Cancer, the Lady’s home sign, I measure everything with her divining rod. I travel in her boat.

Journey by Water                       Sarah Fuhro

At night I ride my coracle,

to the dark shore, silver Moon

of the tree filled island,

where I will meet my dreams.

The last notes of twilight

play out, as I approach,

push myself forward,

in my round leather boat,

into the slender reeds,

the dark water washed shore.

I put aside the slender pole

no further use for rudder, for oar.

First I lower my human foot

into the cold wet,

sharp fanged swamp,

in a moment,

pause to recollect:

I carry with me, fish shoes,

silver scaled, soft as silk.

With these I know myself,

amphibious, and supple!

Both feet touch bottom,

and I push my coracle to shore.

And you, who are also the Moon’s child, and the child of this dark and light planet, where will you be at this new Moon moment?   Will you feel that shift from the dark Moon to the seed of new light?

The last few degrees of Pisces are momentous in occult tradition. Take this opportunity to truly feel: ‘in the end is the beginning and in the beginning is the end.’ We can be shaken by the sense of walking a swaying bridge over a deep gorge, or a bridge between two seasons, one wet, one fiery.

Bridge in winter        photo: Robert Fuhro  Erving, Massachusetts

I think the Bridge in this chart is Chiron. He is at 28° degrees of Pisces and has a most beautiful symbol from this degree. ‘Light breaking into many colors as it passes through a prism.’   Chiron is the wound we cannot heal in our chart, but the wound is the way we learn to heal others. In this picture of him he carries a youth, the Life Force, Aries on his back. This is a good illustration of this chart which is a link between Pisces, the end of the of the Zodiacal year, and Aries, the fiery introduction to Spring and new energy.

In this image of Chiron there is a hint of Sagittarius, the centaur, for Chiron was a centaur. It’s not surprising that Mars, the embodiment of the Life Force is in Sagittarius square to Chiron, giving a hot spur to this watery moment in time. His degree represents ‘Personalized Worship.’ It is the act of courage when we find our own way to connect to spirit.

Llewellyn Temperance                                             Llewelyn Tarot  Temperance Card

Jupiter, who rules Sagittarius is also a connected to the action in this chart. From Scorpio, he makes a water connection to Moon, Sun, Chiron in Pisces and pressures Uranus and Eris in their location of fire.   As a centaur, Sagittarius is related to Chiron. The connection of man and beast, man as part of the animal kingdom, is beautifully illustrated in this card, with overtones of Pisces and Neptune.  Pisces is the healing water of the Zodiac.

Ravens in the sky                     photo: Robert Fuhro   Ravens in the sky

Give this moment in time your attention. We enter the Celtic Moon of Alder on this day. There is potential for the magic of the Alder to open your eyes to something you might want to manifest. Alder is the wood of wet places, yet strong enough to keep the city of Venice above water! It is the Month of Bran, the Raven, who made himself a bridge, between Ireland and Britain. This Pisces new Moon is the link between Water, and Fire, between the last days of Pisces and the moment of the spring equinox when the Sun moves into the sign of Aries.  Stay between seasons, between signs of the Zodiac, and listen to the prophecies of that magical bird the raven.

Merlin Goes Underground   Sarah Fuhro

Master of Magic,

Merlin bends his silver locks,

He enters dark earth.

A tomb, a womb,

a castle underground

now his kingdom.

Some say lovely Ninevah

willed him there.

Foolish in his dotage,

was he easy prey to illusions

of fairy women

with their watery tricks

who wished him extinguished

in the cold, moist ground?

Is it true they wanted him

covered over with leaves,

compost for another age,

when powers of a new sort

might rescue him from cold storage?

Did he enter his cave, his tomb,

his hole in the ground

under the illusion

he was scheduled for a lover’s tryst

in some lovely castle

built of spun sugar and spite?

Or is this the story of a confluence?

Two streams come together,

blend their crystal waters,

deep beneath the earth

in joyous union.

Did they run underground together,

She of the shining eyes,

and old Merlin the wise?

Did they burble up, twined and blended

to emerge in the holy springs,

the red and the white waters

of Avalon, the Isle of Glass?

Was there a sacred marriage

between the magician’s highway

in the Milky Way,

and the twirling spires of Caer Sidhi,

the land of starry faery,

that circles the earth;

and marks the journey of the Sun,

through twelve sacred seasons.
