A Moment in Balance!

New Moon in Libra

waning moon with Jupiter

If you have been up at dawn over the last week you saw the waning, but not faded, old Moon as she danced with Venus, Mars and Jupiter. Soon she is in seclusion with her Libra Sun, a conjunction which will become exact on Monday, October 12th at 8:06 PM EDT. Libra has much to do with marriage or any one to one relationship and the balance (note the symbol of the scales) between the needs of the self to develop and blossom, while honoring the particular talents and quirks of the other person. This is not blending but rather walking side by side. And, as in this picture the scales are not always in perfect balance!

You might expect or hope for a peaceful moment for the two luminaries as they stand in the same degree, a sign ruled by libraVenus, the lady of love, but across the chart from them is Uranus who always presents a shake up in the status quo.   Will our experience of the new Moon be peaceful or full of the electrical energy of the eccentric Uranus?   He’s in retrograde; perhaps old issues will arise to remind us that any close relationship takes work.   I wonder if the presence of Juno in the Libra mix will indicate old injustice done in the name of dominance of one partner or one sex over the other….usually couched in the word ‘traditional,’ or ‘how things have always been.’

The other noted player in this chart is Pluto who took marriage into the Underworld by force. He is square to Uranus and to Sun and Moon. His presence always suggests that the whole truth has to be told, before freedom in attained.

New Moon in Libra 2015Pluto is also making a very tight trine to Jupiter.   The two are brothers, one who ruled the skies and the life giving lightning bolt (Jupiter/Zeus) and one whose kingdom was in darkness and the mystery of Death.   As an astrological player, Pluto is quite new on the scene. But his influence is powerful. Anyone who has had a close passage with him, knows how agonizing that transit may be upon the all the structures of a life, but also how often wonderful are the transitions that may arise from the destruction.

The Sabian Symbol for this moment of the new Moon is about ‘Inherited Wisdom.’   The image is ‘A Rabbi performing his duties. the ability to draw on the power of an ancestral tradition in order to serve and inspire one’s fellowmen.’

Each of us has received some form of wisdom from the past, which we can share with those around us.   My first inkling of astronomy came from my father’s showing me the starry skies, the constellations and planets, and telling me the Greek myths, which they record in the night sky. When we moved to the country, our neighbor, an old farmer, told me about planting by the Moon, root vegetables in the dark of the Moon, above ground harvests must be planted when the Moon is waxing.

This is the Gort Moon cycle according to the Robert Graves’ interpretation. Gort is Ivy, and since Ivy grows in a spiral, she teaches that to grown upwards, we must turn inwards as well. Chewing Ivy is a way to ecstatic vision, yet Ivy is also an antidote to drunkenness. The Bacchanals of Dionysios were celebrated with Ivy as headdress and as psychedelic. This was a time (October) of death, but with the promise of resurrection, for the Ivy stays green all year round. Ivy and Holly are female and male partners, used in a number of rituals for finding love, marriage, fertility.

Ivy Tavern

I will pluck the tree-entwining ivy

As Mary plucked with her one hand

As the King of life has ordained.

To put milk in udder and gland

With speckled fair female calves

As was spoken in the prophecy.

On this foundation for a year and a day

Through the bosom of the God of life, and of all the powers.

from the Carmina Gaedelica

A New Moon in Pisces, March 1, 2014

young_moon http://indigo2crystal.wordpress.com/2013/12/01/astrology-for-december-1-7-2013/

Saturday morning at 3:00 am, we will have the birth of a new Moon cycle.   Pisces Sun and Moon snuggle between Neptune in Pisces and Chiron in Pisces.  The potential for the dream, the vision, the healing power of meditation are all present, so is confusion, illusion, and mystification. Pisces is the realm where the spiritual is as tangible as the material, but for those of us locked into a material viewpoint, it can be a place of foggy confusion.

To put this all into words from the wordless ocean of Pisces, Mercury stands by in Aquarius.  He has only recently turned direct, and so has visited these watery shores, and will revisit them as he goes forward through Pisces.  Here he is looking over his shoulder to recall his journey in reverse from Pisces into Aquarius.

Mercury retrograde

We need his Aquarian mental clarity to translate the poetry of this particular Moon event.  Neptune is a ruler of Pisces and so deepens the message of Sun and Moon adrift in a sea of oneness. The healing nature of this sign is compassion, an opportunity to feel our deep connection with all.  Vulnerability becomes a means to deepen our understanding; Pisces is the ‘give away’ sign before the noisy entrance of the Sun into Aries and the Spring Equinox.

The Pluto/Jupiter opposition is in this mix as well.  Pluto in Capricorn with his powerful work of breaking down the old structures of government and business is in a sextile with the Piscean players.  His contact is most exact with Chiron, the healer.  Perhaps we will begin to envision a new and more compassionate form of healing.  As we remember that our bodies are the healers, we can trust the process of recovery, rather than see it as a battle to be won or lost.  Chiron, the great healer of the ancient world was a centaur, part man, part horse, and his connection to body recalls this animal part of our self, who knows what it needs to be healthy.

This is the Moon of Fearn, the Alder, a water loving tree, just as Pisces is a water loving sign!

Alder trunks are the pilings under the older sections of Venice and many medieval cathedrals.  The tree is linked to Bran the Blessed, who used his body as a bridge for his followers to cross the river Linon to safety.  He is a bridge between the worlds, and, after his death, his tribesman carried his head for seven years while he sang and prophesied. The head of Bran was then buried under the White Tower of London and is guarded by ravens, his special bird. The Alder can be used as a blood purifier and lymph cleanser.   It can guard the body as Bran guarded his people.

Jupiter in Cancer makes an exact trine with Sun and Moon as well as spilling over onto Neptune and Chiron, while standing in opposition to Pluto.  Uranus makes a square to both Pluto and Jupiter, creating a triangle with revolutionary potential.  During this ongoing square between Pluto and Uranus we have seen a number of revolutions seem to crumble into chaos, rather than open to possibility.  Is there another way to create change?

The Sabian Symbol for this new Moon is seems to refer to this quandary:   Men traveling a narrow path, seeking illumination.   The capacity inherent in every individual to seek, at whatever cost, an entrance to a transcendent realm of reality.   Walk ON!
